US Military

How many special forces groups does one military need? Green Berets, Navy Seals, Delta, etc.
They can't all be special, right?

Gotta have an actual trained fighting force doing all the heavy lifting for the bullet sponges behind them. There really should only be one special force in the US military. MARSOC, rangers, SEALs, PJs, Berets, etc...all should be one group called Delta. With a civilian detachment from the CIA's SOD.

They sort of are, isn’t that the point of JSOC? But there’s some merit to each branch having their own who they can call on for things without having to go through outside bureaucracy.

I like the contribution to combined arms better. It's how our combatant commands work anyway. 5-branch military has been good at absorbing and integrating changes and demands.

      You're retarded.

There is literally nothing a MARSOC Operator or a SEAL can do which a Delta Operator who has gone to a Dive School can't also do. There is literally nothing a DEVGRU Operator can do which a Delta Operator can't do. Nothing.

The entire mission set of Green Berets is retarded and largely useless. Exactly the same can be said for Rangers. Everything on land can be achieved with regular Infantry. Everything at sea can be achieved by individual Navy MOS which aren't special forces. Everything in the air can be achieved by regular members of the Airforce.

All you need is one Special Mission Unit and that's Delta. You can train a Delta Operator to be a JTAC or a Dog Handler or whatever bullshit you're going to come up with.

Mainly bc that unit has grown into that capability over the last 2 decades by way of it's leadership and JSOC funding. Same could be said for devgru to a degree but would say that the army smus are on another level when it comes to support and could more likely self sustain as it's own better than the devgru.

Contrary to popular belief and every single fucking book a SEAL had ghost written for them SOF isn't about being ultra badass super soldiers that are all fuck Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando. It's about having highly trained and specialized operatives to handle very specific and unique situations that normal infantry won't be able to easily handle. If the point was just to make more capable and versatile infantry they'd just increase the qualifications and extend the training duration for infantry. Dumping them all into one big fucking basket literally destroys the entire point of their utility. Instead of forces extremely proficient at one specific area you just have a bunch of guys that won't remember half their training when its time to actually go to work.

Rice farmers don't have a professional army with anti air and jets. Aside from that, the NVA did horribly against American forces during Vietnam. The only force they did well against were the south vietnamese. But even then, they lost majority of their offensive capacity when they did the tet offensive. People always say "muh rice farmers" and "muh goat herders" without a single nuance to why they lost.

This is a vatnik-tier "Kyiv was a feint" cope. The tet offensive had the political goal of making the burgers feel the war is unwinnable and it achieved exactly that. Vietnam ass-raped the US in the war based on its real-life outcome.

The tet offensive screwed the NVA's ability to wage war for a while. The vietcong got fucking massacred and the NVA took a while to recover from it. The only victory they got was a propaganda victory. The NVA consistently got demolished by American forces and they didn't even invade until 2 years after the U.S. left. The U.S. won the battle, but lost the war

            Anonymous

Pretty sure that was an unintended side effect, actually. Not downplaying the NVA or VC here, they did a fantastic job both tactically and strategically considering what they had to work with (contrary to what burgers may burp out inbetween mouthfuls)

          Anonymous

Real muddled info here. The VC (as in southern comminist guerilla) lost most of its offensive capability (temporarily) after the tet-offensive, that much is true, but the NVA did not, as it was only partially involved (the NVA supplied soldiers to the VC as recruits, when needed and to prop it up). The VC rebuilt after the tet-offensive (with a larger contingent of NVA recruits to prop it up), it was not neutralized in any shape or form.

The army has the rangers and Delta, and rangers is arguably easier to make it into that a lot of other SOCOM groups.
The marines just had MARSOC. And doesn’t MARSOC not deploy anymore?

You can get immediate contracts to 18x (special forces) or option 40 contracts to go into Ranger reg through the army. It’s still difficult though obviously. It’s also easier to go to RASP or SFAS in the army if you want after you enlist normally

It is also “easy” to get into the SOF community after already enlisting because they are always recruiting. This is assuming you can pass the selection process. Stuff like RASP is easy compared to other high speed low drag organizations

Rangers are “easy” compared to other SOF. They have no swim test and a pass rate of about 40%. So if you try out three times at least, you’re probably in.

Anon, you know the answer so do i, its the fucking Military Industry Complex, each fucking "operator" branch requires its own inflated to the moon budget where the high ranking officers can just "grab" from there.
    >also
There's a lot of people in the Armed Forces whose job prospect entirely depends on the recruiting/graduating ratio, so those people make sure to always inflate and overgrow their respective branches of "special purposes" dudes just to gain promotions inside the command chain.

Btw to all those people screaming
    >muh specialization!
That's exactly why the armed forces has "schools", so the knowledge can be fragmented into modular courses that can be taken by anybody physically and mentally capable, that means they could train some monolithic special forces branch with all of them and train all of them , because unlike whatever kool-aid retired vets trying to sell something has told you, you dont need to train 24/7 the same very specific role for a very specific task that the USA may not have a need but every once in 20 years or so.

I think Europe is doing better on this field.
The countries have less groups but still highly specialised ones.
For example Italy has raiders in every branch, rangers and then a couple other specialised things.
The Brits are doing pretty well with their boat guys and call of duty's cool boys.
The Germans had a one specialised in selling explosives to neo Nazis, which tbf, I think was kind of a waste.

Special forces means pretty much nothing. It's special operations that you need to watch out for.
