Upgrades

Russians apparently have upgraded their loitering munitions swapping the 2-stroke engine for the electric engine and batteries, also they increased its payload. Now when used at night it‘s completely stealthy and undetectable, you can’t hear it either.

How good are those things in cold weather?

well, electric buses somehow work in cold weather. In the end though do you really need something that lasts for too long in a loitering munitions?

        Anonymous

no, but you need something that works you fricking mong.

If it can fly for a few hours it's more than enough.

To get something of that scale to fly for "a few hours" on battery power is extremely optimistic even in the best of conditions, never mind in cold weather.

They use forced heating of batteries. Making shit with batteries work reliably is a big pain in the ass.

"Flying very slowly" does not mean "loitering".

      >"Flying very slowly" does not mean "loitering".

It runs by satellite navigation. They can make it waste time just doing circles up in the air if it's programmed to. In other words, it's a loitering munition.

        Anonymous

If you can’t pick a target after it’s already in the air it isn’t a loitering munition, no matter how dumb the flight plan is or how slow it is

        Anonymous

Wrong. A loitering munition can transmit data back to its controller and be effectively retargeted mid-fight. This garbage thing can't do that. It's a bargain-bin V1, a slow and weak cruise missile.

        >muh circles

You can program a dumbass flightpath into any cruise missile, doesn't make it a loitering munition.

    >also they increased its payload.
You clearly don't know a frick about electric engines vs gasoline. You could increase payload with electric motor with the 'little' tradeoff of losing 95% of its range.

    >you can’t hear it either.
Large propellers are noisy, did you know?

They hit something in Odessa afaik, it's not too far away.
      >Large propellers are noisy, did you know?
Not as noisy as a two stroke engine.

        >, it's not too far away.
With less than 100km of range is far enough to be out range.
        >Not as noisy as a two stroke engine.
Still can be heared from hundred of meters, the Shahed-136 in a open place probable can be heard from 2-5km.

        >guided

It's a bargain-bin V1. Yeah, nobody will know where it hits, including the users.

Yeeting it at a powerplant and hoping it'll hit somewhere with the premises that its dinky warhead can actually do appreciable damage to is about the best use case for the things.

Large, stationary and partially or wholly unhardened infrastructure targets. All it's good for. Other than that, aimless terror-bombing is all it can do.

Electrified they'd have a fraction the range, plus be a lot more expensive.

If there's some problem with the Iranian engine at low temperatures (really doubt that) they'd just fix the problem. Plus is Ukraine much colder than northern Iran in Winter anyway?

      >is Ukraine much colder than northern Iran in Winter anyway?
You ever look at a map, anon? Tehran *might* hit freezing temps in January. Odessa is one of the warmer parts of Ukraine and it gets below freezing for multiple months.

Why would you waste all that time, resources and manpower on upgrading these things anyway? Russia has been creaming themselves about how useful they've been anyway so why bother improving something that's supposedly been working so well?

  18. 2 years ago

I don't know about north-south, but Iran can certainly get cold if you start going upwards. The place has a lot of verticality. And I'd rather put my money on gasoline than batteries in the cold.

Russia didn't stop using the Shaheds because of the cold, they stopped because air defenses got used to them and they lost 85-95% of all drones launched. Adding an electric motor, better cameras or night vision decreases the range massively and makes your previously spammable cheap drone much more expensive, meaning fewer can be massed in a single swarm, meaning they become even less efficient at not getting shot down.

      Anonymous

      >better cameras

Erm, dude? It has no camera. No sensors. No transmitter, either. It's not a drone, it's just a really shitty ground-launched cruise missile.

I would be worse for everything, batteries will never have same energy reserve as fuel, but they are more expensive, same for the electric engine that could take off ~200kg. Iranians made the cheapest possible shit for terror attacks.

waste heat from the motor driver and battery management system can be used to warm the battery's, just needs an thermostat to open a vent to prevent overheat.
