there was footage of rus recce team probing amongst buildings in western Soledar. Probably yesterday or day before. I have a feeling that there are only few Ukrainians in Soledar and the place is mostly defended by fire from outside of it. Theres higher ground to West so they can see along the road and into the town even without drones.

They were at the outskirts of the town, hundreds of meters from their claimed position.
Unless you mean the other video from "the center of Soledar" which was in a village 20km from the front.
Or the video from an unrelated gypsum mine.

Desperation and literal mental illness. The ones who aren't paid to be here are useful morons who feel a big, empty hole in their hearts since Trump is out of power, it's only natural they gravitate towards another strongman with a semi-functional propaganda arm. I wish it were more complex than that but it's human nature, many people don't care at all who is right or wrong, they only care about who appears strong, and Russians are masters of appearing strong even when they are incredibly weak.

It’s even simpler than that, they’re just reflexive contrarians. They hear things from politicians or in the media that they don’t like and rather than just concluding that they’re wrong about that thing in particular and might be right about other things they assume that those people are wrong about EVERYTHING. Ukraine being invaded by Russia? Well obviously the evil drug addict hohol Nazis are at fault and we should celebrate their deaths. Favourite celebrity turns out to be a sex pest? Well obviously this is a conspiracy by a israeli cabal in Hollywood. Trump being mocked for selling NFTs? Well obviously this is part of his hyper dimensional chess game and anyone he disagrees must be a liberal. If you told them that they had to drink water to stay healthy they’d gladly start drinking piss out of spite.

What makes it funny is that they imagine automatically taking the opposite opinion to people they don’t like makes them smart, rather than making them just as dumb as the npcs they mock.

According to some interviews the problem was both flanks of the Ukranian forces were not that good so they folded while the center held. It seems they were able to for the most part stabilize the situation for now but it's still critical.

        Anonymous

Aren't some of those forces just random TDF units? Basically their militia style reserves.
If they held back the waves this far, I'd say they were doing a decent job.

          Anonymous

We won't know for some time but regardless of the situation the Ukranians did drop the ball on this town. They should have known an offensive was going to happen here with all that intel but war is random and everything goes wrong so who knows until it can be analyzed in the future.

            Anonymous

They did know. But they decided against sending further reserves to hold it.

I assure you, the Ukrainian leadership knows more than you. Of their own capabilities and the enemys

It'll be interesting to see the fallout from Soledar and whether the Ukrainians feel they need to risk manoeuvre forces to retake it.
I really don't want the vatniks to make this into a serious victory and from looking at the map I'm not 100% sure that Soledar was quite such a vital linchpin for Bakhmut. Losing Bakhmut isn't that much of a big deal operationally but it would be great if Ukraine held it and continued to stack dead vatniks. Prigozhin talks about using the battles for Bakhmut and Soledar to bleed out the Ukrainians' good troops which is insane Verdun-level cope in my opinion, but I hope my sense about the relative casualties being suffered by both sides is correct.

So there are still AFU troops in west Soledar
Very risky move because their flanks are compromised.
Looks like wagner lost the momentum but without a counter offensive soon Soledar is probably doomed.

A counter-offensive is coming. The Russians are too close to Ukrainian reinforcements.

Yeah I know that their are sending reinforcements + artillery and wagner push already stopped, but time is not in the ukrainian side in this scenario, they lost their flanks and thats terrible.
If they actually manage to push them out it will be a huge humiliation after all the soledar spamming and I will tip my fedora to them but honestly it looks bad.

          Anonymous

I'd rather they pull out of Soledar so they don't waste troops for no reason. That being said, if Valeriy Zaluzhny thinks its a good idea to keep that town, then more power to them.

I still want to know, are HIMARS hitting Russians there yet? That's imo the way you can tell Ukrainians are serious about a battle.

            Anonymous

Using expensive and limited HIMARS ammo as close artillery is a waste. They will use them to hit the places wagner use to rotate troops far behind the frontline as usual but that requires time and intel.

                Anonymous

Three weeks ago I would have responded to this post by pointing out that cluster munitions produce horrific amounts of UXO and are thus probably not what the Ukrainians would want to fire at territory they intend to reclaim
But the Ukies recently made a publically statement basically declaring "frick UXO" and asking the Americans for every cluster bomb, shell and rocket they have so whatever, I say we send them too.
I want to see what famous "grid square deleter" actually looks like in combat

Ukraine has world-class EOD crews, and even many civilians have skills from their stints in the army
Russians have been mining and shelling Ukraine for so long that only a few middle-eastern countries may have as many UXO experts
between merely 2014 and 2016, for example, 49,000 instances of landmines, UXO, and IEDs were handled, an unthinkable number anywhere but the Middle East or maybe Vietnam
if anyone is responsible enough to deplete stockpiles of cluster munitions in a safe and effective way I'd think Ukraine would top the list

Soledar is a sunken cost battle. Ukraine doesnt want to pull out because they lost so many men holding it even though withdrawing to a better position makes sense.

              Anonymous

Mmm. Depends. It's not that Bakhmut is crazy valuable strategically. I think they just value it because it's the most convenient line they can hold. The rail line doesn't go east-west there it goes north-south. So they'd have to move the line back quite a bit to set up a new defensive position. So as long as they still think they can hold it with disproportionate force I expect they will. Mostly because retaking it will favor the enemy instead of them.

they have limited resources (help from the west simply isnt enough, even the ammo that gets sent is used very quickly). russians are attacking like mad all over the donetsk border so the dialema for ukraine is to decide where to send the resources. 1) send it north to aid the ukrainian attacks there, which could open up alot of the north and west of the SD river however the terrain isnt ideal there and russia is dug in deep. 2) send more to bakhmut. this will obviously help the situation but means ukraine cant attack elsewhere, ultimately meaning that russias plan there worked. 3) build up and attack south. better terrain to attack and cap comprimise a huge section of the russian front, but it means the rest of your current line has to suffer.

it looks like they are going with option 3, and Zaluzhny even made a point of apologising to the poor guys in the trenches not getting what they need because the new reserve has to take priority.

But it didn’t, Russia didn’t even take the town and continues to walk into the obvious meat grinder, if they actually had a brain or plan they’d abandon the obvious trap.

Both sides are licking their wounds and rebuilding stockpiles of men and material for spring.
Russia has mobilization part 3 and has been rebuilding some of their stock pile of artillery munitions

      >Feels like the ukies have been unusually quiet offensively. I wonder if they're stockpiling shit for a big Melitopol push after winter
Well, Russia and Belarus have been massing vehicles, troops and logistics in Belarus for MONTHS now. This will be the next front, not a matter of if, but when.
Ukraine knows this and has been building up defenses/mining the region/massing reserves.
Meanwhile, Bakhmut is a meat grinder - and as long as Russia can throw actual fricking convicts with fourth rate equipment into the grinder - they're gonna keep doing it, because Ukraine has to use actual people instead.

Every rocket, missile, recruit, tank, truck, AFV, etc that is used at Bakhmut can not be used to reinforce the North or the South.
Likewise, any material used for a push towards Melitopol can not be used to defend against a new front.

I think Ukraine is doing everything it can to shore up resources, manpower and logistics, waiting for Russia to make the first move; meanwhile Russia is doing the same. First one to act may well be the loser.

For years now, vatniks have taken memes without understanding them and tried to flip them around.
Most famously, they completely misunderstood most Simpsons references and thought the laughing cat is screaming in agony (conflating it with an unrelated meme).
After years of this (and then 4 months of an especially intensive barrage of this) anons started copying these botched attempts at memery and posting them "ironically".

It was embarrassing 4 months ago when they were claiming Bakhmut had fallen. Jesus wept. It'll go eventually, surely, but it seems it's going to take everything they can spare, the largest mobilisation since WW2, a 4% year on year drop in GDP, their remaining CSTO 'friends', and flipping Nordic border states into NATO. IMO, Bakhmut isn't worth losing an aging T-72 over, let along Solefrickingdar..

Yet vatBlack folk are claiming that they took the whole town and have entire Ukrainian divisions surrounded. Even the maps the Russian MoD is putting out disproves that, but they are still running with that story.

So what happened? After months of Wagner ineffectively fricking around, the (endangered) Russian regulars were sent to Soledar by Monke and actually did the hard work of pushing into the town, taking heavy losses, then Prigozhin tried to claim the glory for Wagner alone for PR? This pissed off the Russian MoD so much they released that statement out of spite? Did I get it right?

Correct. If Wagner's leader isn't careful, Russia is going to send his coordinates to Ukraine's HIMARS one day, lol.

So obviously the retaking of Kherson, Lyman, et al., was merely a cope by the hohols for losing 2X% of their nation to Russia. This means that ruskie efforts to claim Bahkmut were a cope for a cope, which in turn makes going for Soledar a cope, for a cope, for a cope? Is there a level of cope of I'm that I'm missing, or else adding erroneously? This is cauldronposting all over again.

NTA but no, the Ukrainians who were killed didn't realize the tank wasn't one of theirs as it was early on in the war. This is why it was and remains spammed so hard. The roll webm shares these relative traits.

No it was Russians posing the tank as captured. They were Russians in them, with the Vs painted over.

It's very obviously not blue on blue since the tanks top machine gunner opened up following the tank shot.
