Ultrasonic Dog Deterent

Neighbor placed a belgian malinois in our shared courtyard. It is in a small cage and barks nearly 24/7. I asked him politely to do something to reduce the barking and he has told me to go f*ck myself.

I am putting together a 20W DIY speaker setup to try to play ultrasonic sound to silence the dog.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. I have no experience on this topic.

small bluetooth amp I intend to connect to a phone playing the audio files.

Dog is approximately 25 feet away from my door which I will be mounting the speaker on.

This type of speaker will not be very effective at reproducing ultrasonic frequencies. You need something like a tweeter or piezoelectric transducer.
Of course, there's always the final solution

See my last post. It's a bit too late to poison it and I dont have access to its water dish for that wienertail.

I was going to lob a few Xylitol stuffed meatballs into its cage. I've already done some research on poisoning dogs because the noise is unbearable.

Thanks for the advice on speakers, I'll look into piezoelectric

Anyone know at what point this will cause permanent damage to the dog?

          >Anyone know at what point this will cause permanent damage to the dog?
Hearing damage is based on intensity and duration of exposure.
Intensity is inverse-square to distance from the emitter. So moving the emitter further away will greatly reduce the intensity of the sound.
Duration is obviously what you control by how you cycle the emission. Do you just do short bursts? Or do you let it run continuously? This not lifetime duration of exposure, but rather there's some recovery period after which the temporary impairment heals after exposure. Like the ringing in your ears going away after a loud sound.

Since you are using ultrasound that is presumably beyond your own hearing, you really have no way to appraise the intensity of the sound (short of electronic equipment). So honestly, you really have no fricking clue what it's going to do to the dog. Maybe the reason the gadgets you bought don't work is that the dog is already half-deaf to the frequencies used?
Oh, and don't presume that ultrasound can't harm yourself or your family. True, you don't have much if any hearing in that frequency band to lose directly. But ultrasound can have direct affects on other aspects of your physiology. And ultrasound can interact with the environment to produce resonances that are actually in your hearing range (there's an emerging area of study around using ultrasound to broadcast human-audible sound over longer distances).

The speaker will be positioned in my door frame between the door and screen door. I will have my door closed and I will be using weatherstripping foam to insulate the area around the door.

I am hoping that the sound will be shielded enough from the interior..

but yes I have given thought to how it could impact me and my family. I tried it out using a normal speaker and i could hear the 20hz tone and it made my head ring.

the point of dog whistles is they're comfortably outside the human hearing range.

That's really what you should use btw - one or more dog whistles on a small air compressor, pump, etc

and it doesn't need to run all the time. 15-30 seconds every 5-10 minutes would be way more irritating than "all the time" at least to me

Small compressors are generally nearly tankless and need to run pretty frequently. Am I supposed to deal with the noise of a compressor and sit there and time out the bursts or program some sort of arduno controlled valve release. Sounds a lot more complicated than a speaker/amp/mp3.

                > Sounds a lot more complicated than a speaker/amp/mp3.
Well, it's not, because mp3 is capped at about 20khz and can't reproduce a dogwhistle frequency ever. And 90% of consumer speakers can't either; you'd need audiophile grade tweeters.

Also a small fan is not remotely loud or power-hungry. You do not need 100psi, you barely need "human lung pressure"

                100% right

Maybe the dog is already deaf. But don't worry, you can also blind the fricker with powerful IR laser. Just be careful not to blind yourself.

                good idea, cheap.

                >a small fan
You underestimate what "human lung pressure" actually is.
Weak human lungs have static pressures of 600 mm h2o.
Strong computer fans have static pressures of 8 mm h2o.
No, that's not a mistake, it's literally two orders of magnitude difference.

I did a project recently where I tried to build a positive pressure respirator. I needed a ridiculous fan capable of inflating outdoor balloon displays to get any amount of air through a KN95 that was cut in half.

this isn't PrepHole, we use parts other than Newegg and Origin here.

Pic related is a LARGE FAN. fans appreciably smaller than pic related; a 20" box or a tiny-ass HVAC blower are probably "small fans" to OP and anon, even though you can't use them for gayming.

          >these are 150watts, looks like i'll need a bigger amp

You wouldn't need a bigger amp. Horn drivers are very efficient and can produce high volume levels with relatively low power, even like 10-20W. They usually have ratings of 1W @ 92 dB/m plus which means that the sound pressure level at one meter is 92 db if driven with 1 watt of power. Each time you double the watts, you gain about 3 dB of output.

          2W = 95 dB
          4W = 98 dB
          8W = 101 dB
          16W = 104 dB

So I'd choose a horn driver with a very narrow field, like 20 degrees, which will allow it to be aimed and will give you a better result with a lesser amp.

I appreciate all the suggestions but the original topic is building a ultrasonic speaker setup. I would like to stay on that topic if possible.

If you love animals you should not come to Philippines. There are millions of strays many covered in mange with open sores, many starving dogs, abused dogs, dogs chained up for whole life on a 2 foot chain, people here have less soul and no consciousness to treat animals with any empathy.

I understand many of you are concerned for the animal here and are using your 1st world empathy to relate to what I plan to do.

Move here for a few years and you will change. You can not maintain empathy for animals here.

Funny thing is the animals here seem to have less soul (visible in their lack of presence and personality) than the animals in the US too. I wont go into that aspect because it's hard to understand until you observe it. I'm not saying they deserve cruelty.. I'm saying I dont give a shit about this dog my neighbor has.. I am a dog lover.. i have had 3 dogs of my own that i treated like children...

...and this one here that barks all day and night.. I would chop its head off with a machete and feel nothing but relief.

Thanks for your understanding. I am indeed desperate.

I have not mentioned that I have been dealing with his barking for 1 year. And have given the neighbor an ultrasonic training collar which he never used. I tried taking it out for a walk once when my wife was 9 months pregnant and it wouldnt let her sleep. It had(has) severe behavior issues i could not spend time to correct, I had to take care of my family.

When i then later confronted him 8 months ago he suggested that he would probably be moving out so it would be resolved by his move.

Like i said, we WERE on good terms before.

Now when i went to ask him for some relief he flat out told me to frick myself.

I even offered to have the dog sent to my brother in law an hour away who has a large farm property and a place for it when he said he had no place to send it... oh guess what.. no that wasnt true...

            He's keeping it.

Filipinos are lying pieces of passive aggressive prideful shit. They will use any and all means to frick over anyone else they can.

If you ever get the chance to see the video about the off duty cop here that shot a grandma and a teen in the head after he tried to detain the teen and granny tried to physically stop it... I sided with the cop when i found out the full story... he was fed up with the kid doing a loud explosive called a Boga over and over... and had a history with these c**t neighbors of his.

            Not quite.

I didnt move here. I was visiting when travel became completely restricted and the embassy closed. Full lockdowns here. You couldnt even leave your neighborhood. By the time I could leave I could not longer afford to and had lost my apartment in the US. That and I refused to get the jab so I was definitely going no where.

Yes my wife is filipina, there are exceptions to the generalization I made. I was referring specifically to the c**t percentage of the population which is a majority. If you werent aware that every country has a small % of decent and considerate people and a huge % of c**ts.... its because you're one of the c**ts.

Contribute to the topic or frick off with your assumption based opinions of my choices.

            > Filipinos are lying pieces of passive aggressive prideful shit. They will use any and all means to frick over anyone else they can
            just like indians

anyways, i absolutely understand you. i guess poisoning the dog (or the neighbor kek) could be done with some kind of rat poison. or your brother-in-law could hook you up with some hardcore pesticide etc (extremely cruel, but i suppose in your situation it's some kind of ultima ratio). the most "humane" thing would be making the dog even more aggressive, to the point where it may bite the owner and thus sorting itself out.

i hope for the very best for your family and you, and godspeed on getting out of that hellhole

It sounds like a karen move but keeping the most neurotic working breed on earth locked up all day is fricking horrible. The dog doesn't deserve that kind of abuse, your family doesn't deserve the constant barking, and your shitty neighbor doesnt deserve to own such a high maintenance animal.
Fricking hate gatekeeping stuff like this but the amount of times I've seen Mals or Shephards get bought by morons who just want a tough tacticool looking dog only for them to end up in the shelter months later is infuriating. They deserve so much better than to be bought by yet another immature frickhead who "needs a protection dog" and get named some homosexual horse shit like Loki or Gunner or Glock and spend the rest of their lives wearing a moronic tactical dog harness and go insane stuck inside a house all day.

A Malinois is a working dog. It should be chasing perps or doing search and rescue work, not trapped in a cage. It is absolutely barking because it has absolutely no interaction or exercise.

I even looked into the legal aspect and there is a civil law against this noise but it will not be enforced. The local officials dont have any logic or desire to follow the written law, and will side with anyone of their own race.

Go to eBay and find a Realistic Super Tweeter. Most other tweeters suck but the Super Tweeter is the real deal made by audio autists at Radio Shack.

Why do you want him to get shit from a company that doesn't exist?

Because high frequency waves don't care if the tweeter emitting them were sold by a defunct company. As pointed out, they're available on ebay.

A Malinois in a cage sounds like bad ownership in the first place. They are extremely high energy, very smart and need a lot of space and interaction.

This is correct. My familiy had a Tervueren, one of the 3 other types of Belgian Sheperds. All of them are very high energy and very social. Being left out to bark sets the dog on a course that ends badly.

just play with the fricker and wear it out when the neighbor isn't paying attention, which is clearly all the goddamn time. don't frick the poor dog over anymore than it already is come on man.

It's hyper aggressive and I have an infant daughter to care for. I dont have time to spend trying to not get bitten.

Honestly OP either let it out of it's cage and play with it or try to get the dog taken from the owner and rehomed or some shit.

There's no chance to "get it taken away" this is not the US. There is no animal rights stuff here.

Shut the frick up. Read the whole thread. The guy is stuck in the Philippines with butthole neighbors and a corrupt local government. It’s a fricked situation and I’m confident he’s desperate. You’d be too.

        Anonymous

          Anonymous

But that cop is in jail probably for life.

Because the c**ts outnumber the decent considerate and frustrate people here. You can read on any forum people that have noise issues here and how nothing is ever done about it.

The only thing you can do is resort to violence and then go to jail... BECAUSE GUESS WHAT... breaking civil laws and doing all kinds of horrible shit is fine but ZERO violence is tolerated here. Even if I shoved him I would go to jail for several years if there was a witness or if the cops felt like it.

There is a known phenomenon that repeating a sound an animal makes a few milliseconds after he makes it will shut it down. Some kind of interference with the sound generating feedback circuitry of the brain. It works with people too. Read the patent I posted upthread. You don't need a lot of power just a variable delay. I'm not sure if it works if you shift it up to ultrasound but I would bet it does.

The best option is to dognap it and take it to a park and let it go. The only other option is to either kill your neighbor or burn the whole complex down and move. Burning will release you from your lease.

All buildings here in Philippines are made out of concrete. You can not burn anything down here.. or i would have already burned down a few things here.

I would chop its head off with a machete and feel nothing but relief.

it's theobromine, the amount varies with the amount of actual cacao in the chocolate
you can calculate the amount and the effect on this site for a given weight
      https://www.petmd.com/dog/chocolate-toxicity
for a male adult malinois it's probably like a pound of fairly dark chocolate

something like a single shitty amerifat candy bar contains very little cacao and very little theobromine

impossible unless that entire entertainment system, source decoder amplifier filter and tweeter, was built to entertain dogs. Any one of those part has the typical 22kHz limit, all you'll annoy is yourself.

      This guy knows.
This whole thread is full of people who have no idea about audio components or speakers.

OP you'd be better off hooking some kind of tiny piezoelectric speaker (if you can find one with ultrasonic specs) to a DC sine wave generator or something that can generate a 30kHz wave ... get away from "audio" components, because hardly anything made for music is going to work

You are a Black person. Your neighbor bought a dog because he lives next to a Black person. That you are contemplating torturing a caged animal makes you a double Black person. I would suggest you simply offer to buy the dog and treat it right but I would prefer to see your neighbor set it on you and purify the community of your Black personishness.

having read most of your thoughts and situation in the shithole you're in, i unironically think killing the dog would be better for the dog. its existence is misery as it is. its misery is making you and your family miserable. it would be better to put it to peace and deal with your neighbour when he thinks it's you. any attempt to silence the dog will be met with retribution anyway. be prepared to show unapologetic dominance. make sure he knows without a doubt you'll fricking kill him in front of his family if he fricks with your family any more, and the problem will most likely just fade away.

I developed misophonia in my teens after the neighbour's dog kept barking and waking me up every night. Now every time I hear a dog bark I have to hold myself back to not beat something up. It really is a life of almost constant suffering except for when I get to put on my headphones. Do something about it fast, even if it means killing the dog one way or another, don't let your life turn into shit like I did.
