The LAU-118/A with Aircraft Launch Interface Computer (ALIC) is all that is needed. Some way to get the right voltage to it through a harness adapter combined with maybe a simplug which makes the airplane's on-board electronics think it's talking to an R-27 and not an AGM-88b HARM. I honestly don't think the tablet has anything to do with the integration, or fire control of the HARM. You just need to get a fire pulse to the HARM with the right voltage, and you're good to go. The programming of the HARM goes through the ALIC, which can be programmed on the ground. The ALIC is circled and highlighted in picrel.

Anyway, I've been of the opinion they've been firing in Pre-Brief from the start, this talk about NATO MiG parts with 1553 integration allowing full HARM functionality seems like too strong a dose of Hopium. afaik just having that data bus installed is only the start of things anyway, you'll need to do a lot more to get full functionality.

I would bet that they are preplanned on the ground and the tablet thing is just fricking nonsense as usual from the drive. Early HARM variants are INS only, so they would require communication with the aircraft to determine the launch position while later ones appear to have GPS receivers. If the missile is preprogrammed to attack a geographic area then all that needs to be done is for the pilot to fly to an acceptable launch region (indicated on the nav suite on the tablet) and pull the trigger, only mod to the aircraft electronics is enabling it to give the launch impulse.

If they jury-rigged it to transfer INS information from the soviet systems to the HARM, that would be a really interesting feat.

Giving missile INS data from the GPS data would not be that difficult provided the rail is pimped out with a computer that interfaces with the HARM

Me too, I guarantee they're running AGM-88b's with block II software in Pre-Briefed (PB) mode, and Tyler is a brainlet as usual.

Yeah, if you watch the RWR in the Mig-29 video, there seems to be no indications from it that it is picking up any radar signals, which, to me, indicates that they're running in PB mode and launching from preflight determined areas. The tablet looks more like flight mission software used to get them to that area using GPS.

      This one?

is just the commercial Garmin GPS navigation they use.

What they did in actuality is that they added a microprocessor unit that emulates an F16 for the HARM and a R-27EP for the plane, and using that as a software adapter. You can see it in the video on the HDD in the bottom right of the Mig29 when it fires

Neat catch anon, I can't say for soviet aircraft, but in some western aircraft the stores are set on the ground by turning a few dials in the avionics bay, the plane doesn't actually know what it is carrying it just reads it from the dial settings. Figure they opted to use R27EP as the stand-in since ukies don't have any in stock?

            Anonymous

Not him but they likely used the R27EP due to the similar guidance system. Probably the easier way to fool the plane into launching a HARM

Both Ukraine and Russia are using old soviet planes with juryrigged modifications. In Ukraine's case they basically pre-programmed the HARMs before mounting them on the plane.

        >they basically pre-programmed the HARMs before mounting
People keep saying that but it means frickall because there are various degrees of "pre-programming" with varying degrees of effectiveness when it comes to AGM88 and we don't know which is being applied here

90% of the time default settings are enough. However, you should be able to program in a multi-directional attack on a SAM network inflight.

I fricking wish that was a legit project on hackaday. "Launching HARM with raspberry pi"

There's probably some DARPA tech that has all the steps in a three ring binder. Frickers just don't want to share.

I assure you there was no such binder. If such testing happened it would have been done by the manufacturer at the behest of some nato army that flew miss. But its unlikely finding weapons integration was a priority in the time of the peace dividend.

simple: AGM-88 is more platform-agnostic than AMRAAMs. they're easier to jury-rig

To me it looks like a proper burial of WWII soldiers' remains found and ID'd after a successful search and recovery mission of war diggers. It was quite common in recent years in Russia as the demand for "patriotic and historical past" has been on the rise.

There are still hundreds of thousands of MIA among soviet soldiers, bringing them back, giving them back their name and proper orthodox burial is not a bad thing.

You can see the coffins do not look heavy, most likely there are just bones in it. This is the only sane reason for "Brothers' grave" in this situation.

Here's a good example of such war diggers, their channel has english subtitles and is probably known in /k/. idunno

still doesn't make sense to me, it can't be sustainable financially for the US to work on jets that they don't and have never used, i have my doubts about them being able to afford this in the long run

It doesn’t HAVE to be financially sustainable. It’s the military.

(You) insanely stupid vatBlack person. The West, and the U.S. in particular, has been training pilots on these platforms for nearly 40 years. We've made more than a few improvements & fixes. It's unlikely that Russian pilots could fly these planes anymore once they've been fully modded and upgraded. We use them in war games to simulate shooting vatBlack folk down, except that we use the upgraded versions to make it challenging.

Now, tell us all about the F-16 training that vatBlack person pilots recieve? Or, is that too expensive for Russia to afford? Surely, Russia has an entire fleet of F-16s they've disassembled and put back together again with improvements the West is incapable of developing. Right? Right ..........??

My dude, a couple dozen jets aren’t even a drop in the bucket. They’re closer to a molecule of water in the bucket

                1. Reverse engineering actually makes you money and improves your technical expertise.
                2. If it prevents the loss of a single US fighter, it probably paid off the R&D cost.
                3. The US budget has way more money than you think.
                4. Seriously, look up the budget. It’s mind boggling.

                >the US military does not have infinite money
Correct, it has 720 billion dollars per year, of which it has spent 18 on this war in the last 6 months. If the Pentagon stopped giving a frick and went full WW3, they could go at it 18 times harder than they are right now.

                >has 720 billion dollars per year
                > of which it has spent 18 on this war in the last 6 months
That's not really very accurate at all.

First, The U.S. Congress made a budget for Ukraine, and the majority of that budget (if not very nearly all of it) is allocated funds apart from the military budget. There have been allocations to the U.S. military to replace equipment they are donating/loaning. There are also allocations to cover the human time & man hours being invested.

For the most part, the U.S. military (via executive action) has been "drawing down" huge stockpiles of equipment and other helpful resources that were already purchased years ago. Some of it decades ago.

In summary, only a fraction of the aid coming from the U.S. is coming out of the military budget. The military is being compensated for the resources it is donating, and for its activities in support of Ukraine, but the majority of the aid packages are money that Congress is allocating from the Federal government for Ukraine, and to help out other countries and organizations that are helping Ukraine. Currently, the U.S. is floating around $100 billion across about a dozen different aid packages, which will spend most of the money over the next three to five years or so. Probably less than $20 billion, if not under $15 billion, are coming out of military bank accounts. The U.S. military is not spending any money it's already received previous to this war, and what it is spending will be compensated out of the Federal Treasury as "Ukraine spending," not "military spending."

But, I also expect the next military budget to exceed $800 billion, using Ukraine as an excuse that the U.S. military isn't well-funded enough for what we ask it to do.

these things just home in on their own on radar right? so all you need to know is where the enemy AA system is generally via its radar signature, and then you launch the missile in the direction of the AA and it corrects its trajectory on its own by detecting and homing in on the radar signature, right?

so they don't need a ton of complex equipment to launch them, they just need to rig the aircraft to have the pilot release / activate the missile and let it do its thing right? It's not like something that's GPS guided where you would have to feed the GPS data into it as well as its current position so it knows where to go and calculate its trajectory.
