Ukrainian Forces Retreat to City Center of Bakhmut

Fresh image of the preparations for a bloody battle for control of Bakhmut.

Trenches are dug parallel to the roads. They are willing to defend the city and make it very painful for the vatniks.

For some reason I read Therapist as The Rapist.

What's the point of holding this strategically irrelevant city and losing hundreds in urban fights and after artillery strikes? Russia may be losing 2x or even 3x more troops there, but these are mostly Wagner prisoners or mobiks, while Ukraine loses its best troops here. Just leave Bakhmut and prepare next defensive lines, and keep training troops for offensive in the south.
Seems like Ukrainian AF are making huge mistakes now, maybe it's not as bad as RuAF did in the first days of war, but nevertheless they have already lost thousands of their best soldiers in Soledar and Bakhmut, who could have taken part in fighting near Kreminna.

Its not a fortress city. Its part of a line. A very well prepared line. If they pull back they fall onto a weaker defensive line. Not only that but they will now be defending strategic ground.

Rather fight in a better position over something not essential than a weaker position over something essential.

            Anonymous

In that case my question is what do the Ukrainians intend on doing to further defend the city? Is their strategy to just try and bleed out the Russians in urban combat, or are they preparing counteroffensives elsewhere to try to take the pressure off?

              Anonymous

Its pretty obvious that both sides are planning big offensives when the ground gets better. Idk why the Russians are grinding around Soledar and Bakhmut but for the Ukranians, letting the Russians wear themselves out on a strong defensive line while you prep for a counter attack makes sense.

I know this. But when the lines flank collapses your supposed to withdraw to the stronger Slavyansk Kramatorsk one, not consolidate inside of the city and just wait to get encircled. This WILL happen and even if Russians take 10:1 losses taking the city it wont be worth it

Okay moron. Ukies fought tooth and nail for severaldonuts and were able to successfully deplete the Russian’s manpower so much so that they were able to conduct two successful counter offensives and forced Russia to do a very unpopular, underwhelming mobilization. Ukies have their a sizable force in reserve ready to strike when the Russians are at their weakest.

Severodonetsk resulted in thousands of ukie kia and captured, it was in absolutely no way a Ukrainian victory/feint or whatever your trying to say. The Russian advance halted after the arrival of HIMARS, not because of losses. The counteroffensives came like 5 months later and was a result of the entire wars losses and Russias inability to get new contract soldiers. Severodonetsk and Lysychansk were disasters for the zsu and prove (once again) how idiotic fortress cities are

Are you moronic? Severaldonuts was captured on June 25th and Lynchingchangs was captured in early July. Kharkiv counteroffensive started In early September, Kherson started late August. In what universe is late August/ early September 5 months away from the end of June/beginning of July?

If severaldonuts was really as bad as you claim it was for Ukraine then they couldn’t have achieved their success afterwards. The vatBlack folk literally blew their wad on severaldonuts. Also HIMARs were delivered in mid-June, so severaldonuts and lynchingchangs were captured after HIMARs arrived in country.

NATO should send more than 100 IFVs and 14 tanks if it is truly interested in the Ukrainian victory and the long-term weakening of Russia.

          Anonymous

You are missing the point a bit here. That’s exactly how much they can afford to send right now. I’m not fricking with you or trying to shill for the Russians by saying that western militaries are at an all time low point in terms of equipment and personnel readiness. The issue is that political pressures internally within most of these countries have undermined the meritocracy needed to have a functioning military, which has led to widespread bureaucratic bloat and massive retention issues. This results in the personnel being tasked being less competent, and the money not going as far as it used to. Repeat this cycle for a decade or so, and you end up with large portions of the logistical chain being basically vestigial, and even larger portions of the equipment required for direct action reaching critical-low readiness levels. Sending tanks or AFVs to this conflict is an extremely costly endeavour, not just in terms of materiel, but also in terms of the resources that need to be diverted. To perform pre-checks, training, and transportation, resources that every NATO country was already short on.

Bahkmut will fall once all the buildings are rubble and the town is effectively worthless for pulling out more casualties and Ukraine no longer values it as a valuable asset to hold. Let me break it down for you
The one credible image we've seen of the forces next Bakhmut shows the Russians fielding a corps sized unit of Wagnerites (30,000 to 90,000 men) plus at least one division sized element (~10,000 men) of Russian regulars against a collection of a dozen or so Ukrainian units, none of which are above regiment size (500 to 2000 men). This means the following:
      >Russian forces in the Bahmut area massively outnumber Ukrainian forces
      >Russian forces are forbidden from retreating once they attack under pain of death
      >Russian forces have been continuously attacking Bahkmut for seven months
      >Russian forces have not captured Bakhmut
I will let you draw your own conclusions.

Russia hasn't force Ukraine to commit their reserves to defending Bakhmut yet. It's funny how Vatniks are physically incapable of learning from their mistakes, it's probably all the fetal alcohol syndrome.

Remember this time last spring where Ukraine was retreating slowly but steadily and employing defense in depth? Remember how the fact that Russia was unable to make any large breakthroughs meant they went through a massive amount of ammo, manpower and material doing this? Remember how it left them weak in the north for a Ukrainian armored assault?

Of course you don't because you were told this was all "part of the plan". VatBlack folk will never learn because they can't even admit they've made mistakes.

The strategically impactful gains all happened in the first month or two.
Kherson for example was huge. Crossing the Dnipro and capturing a huge city at the same time, getting a nice bridgehead for future gains towards Odessa (lol). Now, we all know how that went, but I think that if you asked back when it happened, most people would have agreed that it was a pretty big deal.
So it's not that all the gains that the russians do are seen as irrelevant, it's that they've been reduced to mostly irrelevant gains. Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk have resulted in frick all, for example. I still remember discussing it here before they fell. It was mostly a propaganda victory that wasn't going to lead to anything beyond the russians having another bombed-out administrative building to put a flag on. Many months later, and it's still true. Nothing came out of that axis.
One wonders whether all those donbabweans thrown into sniper fire to force the ukies into revealing their positions were an acceptable price to pay for that victory.

I guess the main question is whether we'll see any successful large-scale offensives from either side, or if they're both so worn down fighting each other that it's just a waiting game to see who falls over first.

Its pretty obvious that both sides have big plans for the spring. Ukrainians asking for and receiving all those IFV's and AFV's wasn't for nothing. Russians stacking all those warm bodies in Belorussia at a time that it needs warm bodies is also not for nothing.

My main concern is whether any of them (on either side) will be successful or if they'll end up being badly-managed or simply bogged down against defenses that they weren't anticipating or were simply impossible to deal with given the equipment on hand. I can see a Belarus thrust failing out of sheer incompetence, while a Ukrainian counteroffensive somewhere in the East might just get bogged down and shift the frontline in an irrelevant way overall.

Ukranians have made big gains every time they have done something. So until proven otherwise I believe whatever they will do will work.

I don't think Melitopol is a good choice for attack at all. I don't know why people think the Ukrainians are going to attack there

Because if your offensive ends along the Russian border you still have to leave troops there afterwards. If your offensive ends along an ocean, you dont need to leave troops behind. Ukraines problem is that they have to defend their entire frontier with Russia and Belorussia, while Russia can focus its entire army on the frontline in Ukraine.

I also have wild ideas about seizing the Russian munitions depots in Transnistria. Fair play, imo, not Russian territory and supposedly there are vast quantities of munitions and vehicles stored there.

That's just factually not true. It's a combined result of kicking the can down the road from the 2008 financial crisis and during early covid giving out 2 trillion in bailout money to the stock market back on March of 2020. Printing that money to bailout the stock market of all things has lead us to the current inflation. Funny how everyone memory holed the stock market bailout and blames Ukraine etc

I don't think so. I think the west (and ukraine) are anticipating the russians will perform a grinding offensive over the spring and fail to make and big breakthroughs, leaving them exhausted and vulnerable to an armored counterattack like in Kharkiv. Ukraine hasn't committed their reserve to bakhmut yet, so they're not actually worried at all. They can afford to slowly cede ground while whittling down russian numbers like they did last spring.

Ah yes, the fabled accuracy of russian artillery.

      Anonymous

This is the problem, good trench's and skilled fortification building makes things go soooo much slower. It is generally very costly and difficult to capture them- to launch a solid offensive on them is a massive undertaking. It is especially troublesome to do so with fortress cities, it will devolve into a tangled mess of wire and rebar like Stalingrad where you do not know where the enemy is because they could be under some rubble literally anywhere, laying prone in weird angles and positions all over the place from literally anywhere.

There is no good strategy specifically for handling these situations quickly. The best strategy is always to encircle them, starve them out and pound them with artillery, mlrs, uav's, mortars, cannons, whatever the frick. Air strikes are best if you can conduct SEAD or DEAD, but no one can do that in this theater. This is what happens with both sides employ MANPADS + varying levels of SAM's. Very little CAS or air strikes or LGB's or anything. It all happens through low cost high reward UAV's, and so those travel about as fast as a WW1 bi-plane or a turboprop or something and so trench's start to make a lot of fricking sense again.

Without true air and naval superiority, war devolves into Russo-Ukraine. A slugging match meatgrinder nightmare clusterfrick. At first, the defensive lines needed to be developed, but after spending resources like mechanized infantry, MBT's, airborne assaults, in an offensive here, missile strikes here, oh helicopters, fighters and bombers learn to fly on the deck- oh no flying on the deck gets you hit with MANPAD's, no more air combat- or very little used in very precise and cautious ways. After lots of death and wasted vehicles and supplies, both sides learn that it is a futile effort to try to spend manpower and assets on deep warfare or mobile warfare or blitzkriegs or what have you.

It will only happen when one of the sides has enough resources to conduct it.

They are very happy to get a second chance, and to end their suffering in Russian prisons. Most of them would rather die then go back to their cells anyway, Russian prisons are awful. Watch some documentaries about them, they are arguably inhumane and it would be more humane to just execute them.

An opportunity to die in "glorious" battle and be remembered with "heroes" as a "patriot" to train and work under the most famous and capable Russian PMC. An opportunity to commit war crimes on civilians and soldiers alike. To kill the "number one threat to the homeland". Some of them may see redemption, many will see opportunity to commit heinous acts on an enemy people and its soldiers. Most are just happy to finally die, and not be stuck in the hell that is Russian prison.

They are perfect really, with a good commissar putting a gun to the back of their head- they will likely follow outright insane orders with fervor and zest because they are happy to die- and its even a "good" death culturally speaking. They DO NOT want to go back, ever.

The penal squads were a great idea, honestly. This is their element, this is their purpose. To commit crimes and violence, and their government, instead of keeping them in a small box that they just want to escape sent them directly to who would handle them best and utilize them the best as warm bodies for small gains and released them and essentially said to express themselves the only way they know how- on the Ukrainians.

The idea that the Ukrops are going on an offensive is frankly unbelievable. This all hinged on western aid which in turn hinged on perceived ukie advances but the armor isn't coming for months now and over 500k rus are coming to the front. And even then as others have pointed out this is clearly attritional and has nothing to do with territory losses since the chances of a real breakout are so slim

As we can see from fresh reports coming in from the front, the Russians are aiming to break out of their encirclement in the master bedroom whilst a relief force try and make their way through the front door. After this, the next logical step would be to capture the bathroom and cut off the enemy's water supply which should be achieved in about two weeks time as long the smell of rotting convicts doesn't route both forces from the house.
