Yes. Russian sisters started a war against their smaller neighbor and after losing it they are blaming it on HATO, with the entirety of HATO being in ukraine according to them, so when we say HATO we mean this big bad bully that tries to pick on poor innocent russia

8 guns in a French battery, so that was probably 96 + spares, or 4 regiments' worth

            Anonymous

It was actually 106 distributed over 5 regiments it seems. The initial order was for 180 but I guess it was a dud, some decades later it was entirely replaced by the Caesar, none in service anymore.
            Still, it's perfectly usable.

They replaced it with Caesar because towed artillery is useless in the colonial warfare the French are pursuing.

Yeah, the Armee had plenty of SPGs, weird that they'd suddenly buy towed pieces. I have a feeling it is a combination of 90s economising and stopgap measures until more CAESAR could be procured

What about Germany? Didn't they allow ukies to purchase directly from their defense firms? Also, if I remember correctly France did give some equipment, but mostly civil security ones (ambulances, firetrucks and such).
I mean it makes sense for all East Europeans to simply give heavy military equipment because they are defending themselves from a potential invasion in doing so and get free gibs of new NATO harware in exchange of old rusty soviet shit, so it's a good deal for them. As for the US, they have both the stocks and economy to support direct donations. But I thought other countries were selling, my mistake and thanks for the clarification.
And yes France is shit poor, has a 98% of the GPD dept and its military was severly underfunded until a few years ago when the General in charge of the armies quit with a letter telling Macron to frick off he doesn't take better care of the army budget

                Anonymous

                Yeh that's correct about Germany.
France did give equipment just not alot of it given its size and gdp, much much less than countries with no were near as big gdp. They gave 12 (+6 but not sure if went through with it) Caesar some VAB vehicles and a few Milans, Javelins and a land based exocet system.

France can't be that poor, it's pretty similar to the UK on paper but comes across alot less capable and donated/bought nothing like what the UK did.

                Anonymous

It's an open secret that the UK has deeper war stocks than the French; that is how they could afford to give away so much ammo and infantry kit

Yeh I'm aware of that but in the case of France and the TRF1...
                >155mm TRF1 howitzers certified by the Ministry of Armed Forces to be delivered (they were purchased by Ukraine from the private defence company S2M-Equipment).
                It's not the case.

Could investigate what S2M got out of it, but they seem to be a defence transport and maintenance company. It's normal for such companies to provide transport and maintenance services. In a way, part of the MIC / PMC.

I'm not ruling out skimming entirely, mind, I'm just saying contracts like these are absolutely not out of the ordinary, from freighting tanks right down to servicepeople buying regular airline tickets to fly around.

That's where politics come into play I guess. UK is legit pissed at Russia for many reason, it has nothing to lose on a political and economical level to go full moron against them, and they are not part of EU anymore so no need to play the diplomatic card. West Europeans countries still heavily relied until recently on Russian gas (they still do but no gas is coming anyway). So it's not about the economy size only, it's more internal politics for them, especially for France since Macron wants to keep talking with Putin.

                Anonymous

                >Macron wants to keep talking with Putin
Does this actually play well politically in France? Because it makes him look like a tool everywhere else.

                Anonymous

I'm not so sure, I don't follow french politics much now, although most of the far right is pro-Russia (pro strong regime actually). MLP, leader of the far right Rassemblement National was in trouble years ago for funding her campaign thanks to a Russian bank loan. Same with the far Left which is anti "western imperialsim" and bullshit of the likes, so Russia probably enjoys some support, or at least a lack of straight condemnation of their actions. Also if you go farther in the past when France was still a relevant world power you can see that France and Russia have always been close at a diplomatic and cultural level, it was still true during the Cold War when CDG left NATO command while the cultural elites from both countries were mutually sucking their own dicks.

Not really, no. He did it at the start because it was an election year for the presidency and it was France's turn to lead the UE, so he thought he could use that to position himself as an european leader that Putin listens to. Amounted to jack shit in the end except for some funny marketing failure (like days before the invasion his team ran a marketing campaign about how Putin retreated his army due to Macron's phonecall). Now he just do it to feel important.

But to be fair, the far-right in France are russians puppets (because Russia pays them) and the far-left are also russians puppets (because it pisses off the USA), and Macron lacks the majority needed to completely ignore them. So he can't do shit besides calling Putin once in a while.

You're right and what I have to add is not to defend him but he also acted and talked based on the intelligence he received from the DGSE, which was totally wrong on every possible point. DGSE head was sacked shortly after the invasion started, so there is that too.

I'd say its more of an acknowledgment of the impasse they are now facing in regard with their energy supply. At the begging western Europe was "ok we condemn your invasion, it's very wrong but let's just talk about it so we can keep receiving our supply". Now that the supply is fully stopped, they can only double down on sending weapons to end the conflict ASAP so their economies could restart (hopefully). I get the "Le bad frog white flag" meme but dealing with this shit was a legit tightrope act, since France was leading EU for 6 months back then and had presidential elections incoming where the far right (the exact same that was funded by Putin's banker friend) was a potential winner. On the calls there's a french documentary that filmed them back in February (as well as Zelensky/Macron talks following the invasion), transcripts of which can easily be found with a quick search. Interesting to see how heads of state converse.

Don't jump to conclusions. It's fairly normal for such transfers to go through a "broker" which is really just a Govt legal entity for paperwork purposes. Also, "selling" them off is also commonly just legal folderol, for example how the UK "sold" its Harriers to the US for $1 - that's just an effect of peppercorn law (look it up). Or as could be in this case, so the Govts can put a number figure on the sale for citizens' informational purposes. Say if you want to, for legal and reporting purposes, donate a weapon to a country worth say $1 million, but in reality the transaction is a donation, how do you carry it on the books? Simple - you give them $1m in "credit", put a $1m price tag on your weapons, and let them "buy" it. Then you can announce in the news that you've donated $1m worth of weapons, as it says on the tin.

In most thirdies of course it's a chance for the broker to skim off the top, but that's not always the case in OECD countries.

Thanks for the explanation, it makes sense, but without information on the selling price how do you know if something is a legit donation at a minimal price for administrative purpose or a real business deal? Do they clarify and make the distinction somewhere? Do regular people eventually know about it or is it done in secrecy?

It's really hard to tell. Honestly the only thing you can do is trust the Govt audit and accountability offices to do their job. That's why memes aside, Western democratic countries do have one advantage; they are more transparent, more accountable, so book-cooking can be (even if not eliminated) at least kept down. So at least you know those armour inserts aren't filled with sand...

It's a reliable 155 tube with some interesting perks. Firing performance is decent, maintenance is okay, spare parts could be an issue but probably not.

I'm still kind of at a loss as to why the US hasn't sent M198s yet. There's a ton of them just sitting in storage.
Yeah, I understand they're heavy so you can't airlift as many as the 777s, but we've had months to figure out a solution to that and Ukraine just flat needs more numbers. Stick em on a fricking boat or something, the Polish train lines run by the coast don't they?
Weight can't be an issue for the ukes if they're buying these, TRFs a 2000kg heaver than 198s.
