what a retarded take. So you want to kill some armor you have spotted with artillery; you can send a javelin to an exact point (but the target might be moving) or you spam dumb 155mm shells, which might miss thus you need a lot of it. However, you can also shoot a BONUS or SMART shell, which will have a hit-to-kill area which is way, way larger than a normal shell - several hundred square meters per submunition.

I mean, the use-case is simple, no?

The whole idea of bonus and smart is retarded because they ride unguided shells and rely on luck and skill of the artillerist. It's a cold war relic from when artillery was shooting blindly in an area. These days there are drones and laser guided shells.

                Anonymous

Yes, but not when it was developed. Also, only a very small subset of drones carries laser guidance. It's indeed a cold war relic, but that's enough to smash a USSR-relic tank, which is what's russia is using.

                Anonymous

Laser guidance is an older, 1970s technology which relies on someone being in the area to manually designate each target. It's only still around because it gave good precision for hitting Arabs without risking their neighbors or the MIC's contracts.

Laser guidance has the distinct disadvantage that it can be spotted and that there are countermeasures.

No not at all if you make it right
The only weakness is when the airspace is well defended and drones can't get anywhere near a line of sight.

                >It was directly above the target. What are the chances of that?

Anon. The point of the small wings around the sub munition is to make them glide while spinning on their axis looking for a target along their flight path.

By doing so these sub munitions cover a 100 to 65 meters wide strip over a length of around 500 meters. Which is around 32000 square meters per submunition or 64000 square meters per complete 155mm round since there are 2 sub munitions per shell.

It is a precision ammunition dedicated to destroy concentrated multiple vehicles with a single salvo, but it relies on the fact these targets are opportunity targets first and foremost.

The sub munition's IR detector is able to classify burning targets, tanks, trucks, and therefore can prioritize some targets and avoid been lured by decoys.

Eh, kinda. The laser fails in sandstorms, clouds, rain, fog, trees, it can't aim through walls or behind hills, it wobbles, it reflects and the bomb goes off target or can't see the target, the plane has to line up on a certain angle or it risks the bomb seeking the designator instead of the target - there are a lot of little problems with it and moving the designator onto a chunky quadcopter only helps slightly.

It's not really a peer-war kind of thing any more. GPS was considered a major upgrade over lasers.

Putting a shell close enough to the target for the submunition to be effective is not exactly complicated, even at long range.

Anon, these people don’t even understand the 1980s stuff, it’s like alien technology to them. They do not understand the power of statistics and how crazy advanced late CW tech is.
That’s why they insist that Russia would have a fighting chance in conventional war against NATO, they are clueless.

a person can carry a small drone with one of those things attached and drones also help when you don't know where the tanks are exactly. Think smallscale SOF stuff.
Of course, in a proper combined arms scenario where artillery support functions well, it's not really needed.

Just with a calculator and some basic OSINT research you can calculate how big an area a battery of 4 guns can cover with a 1 minute salvo and killing all tanks in it at 30km+ range. Putting quadcopters with single EFPs on SOF cannot compete. It’s superior to have them carry advanced optics to spot vehicles that’s way better use of their backpack space.

idk it just seems pretty convenient for some recon guys to have one of those so they can blow up a tank, in case they see one, if they can't really call in a shell with one of them inside
And it seems easier to carry and it has uses beyond blowing up tanks like an ATGM would.

                Anonymous

If I have recon guys, I don’t want them fighting at all, that’s the best way to get them killed or have to abort mission. Not worth it for a tank or two. I want them to sit in holes, shit in bags and map out stuff. I want them to place remote sensors, eavesdrop on coms and count trucks passing over bridges. Those guys are too valuable to have them killed for easy to replace stuff and good intel is way more valuable than a tank or a killed patrol. If they have advanced optics and can spot vehicles from 5miles+ away, I’d have them mark the target and arti it while they pull back. Drones that require permanent command link can be jammed or, even worse, lead directly to your position. I don’t want them to use that kind of equipment.

                Anonymous

that's a fair point, but you can always have someone at home control the drone
There's ways to do this safely and the benefits of having some recon guys wreck a tank basically for free at the cost of 2 kilos of equipment is worth it.

                Anonymous

The point is that it is not free. We lose an advantage in the fight for information trading it for a tank. And I would argue that in some cases it is not worth it. We now would have to discuss what kind of recon on what kind of battlefield we are talking about. When we are at the trenches of Bakhmut, it will likely be worth it. When we are at a low density part of the front or even have infiltrated into enemy territory, I would highly discourage engaging.

                Anonymous

                >but you can always have someone at home control the drone
Drone control range is only a few kilometres for quadcopter things, once you put satcomms on it, it becomes too expensive to be disposable and needs to be a much bigger drone that is then vulnerable to air defences.

                >wreck a tank basically for free at the cost of 2 kilos of equipment is worth it
More like 5kg with control units, spare batteries, the drone and the warhead. The warhead alone is going to be 2-3kg, it's nearly twice the size of a 40mm grenade.

Compare 2-3km range on the drone to 40km+ on artillery and one artillery unit can cover way more ground, control more territory and not be vulnerable to EW. They have to relocate to prevent counter-battery fire but that only happens after they fire whereas drone control signals can be detected and traced before they even find a target.

                Anonymous

Again, consider it as a way to eliminate targets of opportunity during recon, rather than as a means to really fight tanks.
Artillery has a different purpose, as you pointed out and it generally needs to be set up.

                Anonymous

But the recon can just call up the artillery and get it destroyed without exposing themselves and without needing any gear that they won't already have.

                Anonymous

But it means you don't need to have artillery so close to wherever the recon guys are.
There definitely is a use case along those lines for "man portable tank deleter drone", even if you pretend there isn't.

The USSR didn't obviously so Russia and Ukraine didn't inherit it and haven't signed since existing.

Emphasis on had. With 90's budgets US army couldn't afford all the fun things, including SADARM, Sense And Destroy ARMor. They had it couple years in low rate production and made around 800 shells, before they had to cancel it. Most were used in testing. Remaining inventory being used in invasion of Iraq. They destroyed about 50 armored vehicles with about 110 shells.

The US also used its own version during Desert Storm against Iraqi tank columns. It spins using a lidar laser to scan the terrain underneath and has in it's memory different tank shapes so once it spots one the flaps help steer and aim the shaped charge.
Again, 80s western tech must seem like wunderwaffe for the Russians.

All NATO countries have one of the several variants of this thing that all work basically identical but were designed and built in different places because muh national industry.
It’s a simplified shaped charge called EFP that gets released over an area, scans that area with one or more sensors and fires at discovered vehicles, attacking their weak top armor. It’s basically shooting a Javelin but 30km+ range and it finds its own targets in a designated area. It’s not whacky, it’s the shiznit.

It's not that the USA was that good, is that the KGB spent all their time sabotaging not just the west but the rest of the world as well, the USSR included.
The USSR lost when they didn't exterminate them to a man in 1953. And the both Russia and the rest of the world lost when they did not get exterminated to a man in 1991.

Well the calculation was different, western countries spent substantially bigger shares of GDP on defense and the WP was technologically not that far behind. After all, it was the arms race that bankrupted the SU.
Digitalization and miniaturization really took off 70s/80s and that’s were the west had a massive advantage. We have built on that advantage since, which is why most of the modern stuff looks like straight out of a SciFi movie. And the real interesting things are hardly ever talked about. Just think about what EW will likely look like if NATO ever goes apeshit. That’s where a lot of magic happened in the last 30 years but you never got to see it. Because the sand people didn’t have computer networks to attack or coms to jam.

That's pretty much it, the rotation lets it scan a wide area.

EFP's have a range based on radius of the charge I believe, not sure how long but it's pretty decent.

Anon, the T-90M exists, it's the most modern tank currently on the battlefield and it outnumbers the number of modern western tanks in Ukrainian service.

Russia produced less than 50 T-90Ms. There is a reason why they fielded mostly T-72BM3 Obr.2016 until they lost most of those. T-90M’s upgraded turret has sanctioned content and Russia couldn’t afford new hull production once oil fell below $100/barrel.

                >Core argument is a lie
But it isn't though, T-90Ms do outnumber modern western tanks in Ukraine. You may say
                >REEEE but 50 is irrelevant and won't win the war and they don't exist anywhere!!!
But on top of being a strawman argument, what is true is that in any battlefield a company of T-90Ms do find themselves in, they will have the edge in that the other end of the field won't have modern western opponents.

Before you make another irrationally angry post full of falacies and strawman, let's just go over what I'm not saying
                >T-90Ms will win the war for Russia
                >The situation where only Russia possesses modern MBTs will never change
                >Ukraine has no way of combatting T-90Ms
                >Russia is producing enough T-90Ms that production will outstrip NATO shitting a load of Leopard IIs of various marks and conditions on to the battlefield overnight if it chooses to

I'm just simply saying the T-90M exists, it is a modern tank and it currently outnumbers the non-existent modern Western MBTs on the battlefield. PrepHoleope and seethe if you must about that fact, but it is a truefax.

Please just fuck off. You're trying to sealclub someone who is obviously new to arguing with vatniks and it makes me angry.

) I predicted that you'd backtrack and state that it doesn't matter exactly how many tanks there are. Which you're doing. You don't even have the intellectual ability to come up with a new line after I've predicted what you were going to say next. Kinda sad if you ask me.

                Oh but they do though

Nope, neither I nor any of my countrymen are ever going to encounter a T-90M in person. Because if any of them actually do exist (hint: custom conversion jobs on a couple of T-90s is not a new variant of tank, and just stating that a tank has a specific optics system doesn't make it so), they will not by the time we're involved. They will all have been destroyed by the Ukrainian army or NATO fighter jets.

MW-1. Bongoloids had similar munition dispenser system called JP233. Both were specifically meant for ruining runways. JP233's payload was 30 26kg cratering bomblets and 215 mines meant to slightly inconvenience repair crews, it was basically a can that would form explosively formed in one direction to fuck with vehicles and shogun effect with essentially tiny anti-personnel most other direction to fuck meat bags. JP233 was actually used in early parts of Gulf War. While flying straight on low level along enemy runways was considered dangerous as fuck, none of Tornados doing the missions were shot down. They just ended flying the missions because Iraqi air force for most parts quit flying.

They even made small drones that would set where the Smart Skeets go in the 90s called LOCAAS.

        >LOCAAS

        >LOCAAS is a low-cost LADAR sensor coupled with a multimode warhead and a maneuvering airframe to produce a high performance submunition. The warhead can be detonated as a long rod penetrator, an aerostable slug, or as fragments based on the hardness of the target. The LADAR allows target aimpoint and warhead selection to be determined automatically. The powered LOCAAS uses small turbojet engine which is capable of powering the vehicle for up to 30 minutes. Powered LOCAAS has a 33 sq. nm search area.

        >system can be produced using a Multi-Mode Warhead, solid state Laser Radar (LADAR) seeker with Autonomous Target Recognition (ATR), and INS/GPS midcourse guidance and that these components can be integrated into an air vehicle powered by a miniature turbojet engine.

        >The overall objective of the ATD is to provide an affordable standoff (minimum 90 miles) miniature munition to autonomously search for, detect, identify, attack, and destroy theater missile defense, surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems (i.e. SEAD) and interdiction/armor targets of military interest. The system will be capable of discriminating between classes/types of targets and between targets and non-combatants.

Take grey level image of shape you want to destroy, integrate image a few orders (simple math, look up image moment on wikipedia). You get some numbers. Store numbers. If camera image produces numbers that match, you are looking at target, shoot projectile.

        Similar.

Along with the MLRS Terminal Guidance Weapon (TGW) and MLRS Sense and Destroy ARMor (SADARM) from the 80s and early 90s that the US and Germany worked on. The rocket would release 3 top attack penetrator warheads above the target that would search for armored vehicles and explode above them.

        https://www.gao.gov/assets/nsiad-92-7.pdf

They ultimately went with ATACMS Brilliant Anti-armor Technology (BAT), instead. The ATACMS would dispense 13 BAT munitions over the target area. The BATs had acoustic and infra-red sensors. It would use its acoustic sensor to locate the running engines of enemy armor, and then switch to its infra-red seeker to home in on the armor. This was cancelled, and the BAT was used to make the GBU-44/B Viper Strike. The ATACMS BAT came from the Assault Breaker program. LOCAAS is another program that should have gone through.

Most western weapons you see in Ukraine are from the 80s and early 90s. Or even from the 60s.
Some of it is budget-saving designs from the early 2000s.
The only really new shit is still just iterative upgrades of 80s technology - Brimstone is just a better, domestic Hellfire, NASAMS is just ground-launched Amraams, etc.
Ukraine is getting scraps, while in the meantime tankin the entirety of Russia's military potential.

I mean, it's not a bad thing to be into it, but they're definitely into it really bad. In the practical "I want you to come to my place and fuck my wife" way, not the getting off to the idea once and then forgetting about it way.

Nah they just got themselves really worked up over T-90Ms existing. T-90Ms likely will get free parking in their minds now until those 10 Challenger 2s get sent to Ukraine, that will normalise things in their brains a bit and they can blissfully imagine what 10 western tanks are capable of.

Nope. T-90Ms functionally do not exist. The Russians claimed to send 200 of them to the LPR ffs. If they exist at all, as in in compliance with the actual T-90M spec, they're in training units back in Russia.

Yes, but that's not my point. Russia, China, Iran and India very frequently misstate or over-emphasize the specs of military equipment. It's basically a meme that if one of these countries announce something it's either on the drawing board or one rough full scale prototype has been produced.

The vatnik is arguing with you to try and make you believe that T-90Ms exist as a proper, real variant of the T-90 tank. The exact line at which a variant "exists" is a bit nebulous but it's generally agreed upon by military experts and hobbyists that you need to have produced a practical amount of a vehicle in order for it to be talked about as an actual variant rather than a one-off.

So a meme tank produced by Germany in March 1945, of which 2 were made and both were lost in combat, would be considered a "tank", kinda, but a meme variant of a Tiger II that only resulted in one unit and was left in a warehouse is functionally not a variant.

Third worlders use this trick all the fucking time. They want you to think of these vehicles as real, because when you think they're real they have a force-in-being effect that makes all of their shitbuckets (that are actually real and in use) feel more dangerous.

Imagine actually asking a thread to ignore posts you can't argue with lmao

Cameras for target identification, and adjusts its fins to control descent.

Has anyone tried just tanking the individual skeet submunitions and dropping them from drones? I imagine they probably have some bullshit proprietary arming system or whatever that makes that difficult, but I don't see why it should be completely impossible.

that probably already is a thing that we have.
Or even just these submunitions with a cheap quadcopter attached

It'll have an electronic fuzing mechanism, could probably be hacked if you had an intact submunition but why would you bother?
Artillery is an objectively better delivery system, drones struggle with weight and are vulnerable to all sorts of defences and environmental hazards.

TDF drone makers say that they can make an anti-tank grenade with a decent kill probability for about 1.5kg but they need to get it down to 1kg to be viable on the DIY drones they build. 1.5kg is too heavy for the simple EDF drones that you can home-build.

Drones are way more convenient than artillery though.

          Not for anti-tank use.

a person can carry a small drone with one of those things attached and drones also help when you don't know where the tanks are exactly. Think smallscale SOF stuff.
Of course, in a proper combined arms scenario where artillery support functions well, it's not really needed.
