    >Post Soviet Collapse Brain-Drain followed immediately by:
    >Putin's rise to power led to the younger generations seeking a better life over in the west which only exasperated Russia's Brain-Drain issue to the Nth degree
    >Russia's economy had never recovered to the point where a modern airforce was feasible (or modern anything for most of Russia for that matter)
    >Russia's industrial sector had gone the way of the soviet union and never came back to the level necessary for the post-soviet state to catch up and maintain parity with the west.

Air space denial is cheap and easy, SEAD and air supremacy is hard.
The US got raped in Vietnam by advanced air defenses so hard they had to create and master SEAD doctrine. Also no one else has really gone up against such thick air defenses as 91 Iraq and Vietnam who also had a military's with an Air focused doctrine.

The US utterly shattered NVA’s air defenses and by the end of Linebacker 2 they didn’t even try to shoot at US planes. But, it’s true that this was accomplished with a lot of effort and a handful of losses.

Every VF and VA squadron commander on Enterprise's maiden war cruise was KIA when they got back to San Diego. 100%. The entire operational inventory of Thuds was lost in the war, and it was the most numerous US fast mover going into the conflict. We own the sky now but the price was paid in blood.

it was hard and expensive, but with drones like tacit rainbow/israeli copy it can be made easy. just exhaust their point defense systems and it's game over for them, and in case of russia it's even easier because they can't effectively shoot them down to begin with.

Fake news. Most aircraft losses in Vietnam were from not so advanced AAA.

it's not entirely fake because risk of SAM forced a lot of aircraft to fly low and increase the risk of exposure to aaa

          >it's not entirely fake because risk of SAM forced a lot of aircraft to fly low
Another fake news invented by vatniks do advertise thier supposed wundervaffen SAMs.
In areas with SAM threat flights were at about 15000-20000 feet altitude, still above AAA ceiling and at this altitude planes had good maneuverability to dodge SAM missiles. Most losses from AAA were during target attacks when planes were forced to close on target for accuracy. In Vietnam regions were commies didn't have SAMs losses from AAA were about the same.

Floods of cheap-as-dirt surplus MANPADs and a trickle of moderately well-deployed longer-range weapons. Russia doesn't want to risk the loss of expensive aircraft trying to destroy weapon systems NATO has literally written off. Unfortunately you'd have to put them in harms way to even try getting a shot at the longer range stuff (and with NATO sigint and radar on the border they will see you before you see them), and HARM missiles are wildly impractical against MANPADs.
All the tried and tested methods don't really cut it here.

The obvious answer would be precision-guided cruise bombs, except they tried that day one, and their targetting intel was weeks out of date, failing to hit the right places. Now Ukraine is actively trying to prevent such targetting, so it's even harder to get useful timely locations to hit.

My understanding is that the current doctrine for air defence is to literally never stop moving. They just drive, stopping only for a handful of minutes to refuel, and then return to driving around the clock in shifts. They get radioed if they need to stop and go on alert but otherwise they just drive.

          Anonymous

most big air defense systems cannot fire on the move, so your understanding is incorrect. only lightweight systems that provide miniscule cover are made to do that.

            Anonymous

            >cannot fire on the move

Russia thought that giving their pilots less than 30 flight hours a year was enough to keep them proficient in complex air operations. Turns out that in order to be good at air ops, you need a huge investment in training, like how the US does something like 4 Red Flag exercises every year that simulate complex aerial operations with live firings

To be frank, I never considered the Russians to be peer to anything but fricken... Poland, I guess. Even that was an overestimation.
Russia's air doctrine and technology is badly outdated, and their pilots are beyond shitty. They never got enough flight hours to actually be combat effective, and often had to take side gigs just to keep their hours up enough to be qualified.
Russian doctrine never seemed to have figured out effective Close Air Support, either. While any American squad can have a big frickoff bomb dropped on some dickhead within five minutes, Russia's top-down structure means that their men's requests have to filter up the command chain, get lost in the bureaucracy, get found again, get authorised, someone gets loaded with bombs at base (no loitering assets), handed a fricking HAND-WRITTEN NOTE with coordinates written on it, and then they fly over and mindlessly drop some dumb bombs in the vague vicinity of that location. Never mind that whatever they're trying to hit has most likely buggered off by then, and if they *are* still there, the bombs probably missed.

There are no Ukranian planes flying in Donbass and carrying airstrikes on Russian and separatist positions right now right? They can only operate in the western half of the country and still all they do is fly low and lob unguided rockets using their planes as flying rocket artillery because of the Russian SAMs
