i always wondered why people can hear shells coming in, before impact. aren't they traveling faster than the speed of sound? am i retarded?

      Anonymous

No, artillery shells do not travel faster than sound. Artillery shells are projectiles fired from large guns or cannons, and their speeds can vary depending on the type of artillery and the specific shell being used. However, in general, artillery shells travel at subsonic speeds, which means they travel slower than the speed of sound in air (approximately 343 meters per second or 1,125 feet per second at room temperature).

The speed of sound in air, also known as the sonic speed, varies depending on factors like temperature, pressure, and humidity. Artillery shells are typically fired at speeds much lower than the speed of sound to ensure accurate targeting and predictable trajectories. There are other types of projectiles, like bullets fired from firearms, that can travel faster than sound. These are called supersonic projectiles.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask. Happy to help!

        Anonymous

Does that mean you could hear the sound of a subsonic revolver or pistol (as those have existed with that kind of ammo) and thus "dodge" it? or attempt to at least.

          Anonymous

by the time it takes for your brain to register the sound and understand that it's a bullet and it might be coming at you and you need to dodge and send the signal to the muscles and the muscles to go from inertia to movement and the movement to be enough to get out of the way, you'll be dead

.45 ACP moves at about 253 m/s so at a distance of 100m (a fucking long pistol shit) you would have ~400ms from seeing the muzzle flash to impact and ~100ms from hearing the shot until impact.
This assumes instant eye > brain > realizing what's happening and instant ear > brain > realizing what's happening so in reality those time would be much shorter.

interesting. i guess after the apex the lose a lot of velocity and sort of fall down at subsonic speeds. i always thought they retained at least supersonic velocity until impact and it was some weird trick of soundwaves traveling perpendicular or something that allowed people to hear them coming in. cheers.

At the top the vertical velocity is 0 (no more "up" movement, starts falling down -> vertical velocity is negative). Terminal velocity, depending on range and height is somewhere up to the speed of sound - but if I understood it correctly that only happens at the far end of the maximum range. If the target is nearer the max. reached height above the canon is lower and thus the final speed decreased.

The average horizontal speed according to [1] is 290m/s (951,444 feet/s) for a 155mm shell. Looking at the provided figure (picrel, page 11) this shouldn't vary too much during the duration of the flight.

moron how do you not understand that horizontal velocity decreases at a rate proportional to the air resistance the moment the projectile leaves the muzzle of the gun?

Black coffee, enjoyed in moderation, can offer certain health benefits due to its antioxidant content and caffeine stimulation. However, it's important to be mindful of your individual tolerance to caffeine and to avoid excessive consumption. If you have specific health concerns or conditions, it's a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet, including your coffee consumption.

I'll be happy to be more specific about it.

Black coffee, without any additives like sugar, cream, or flavorings, is relatively low in calories and contains several potential health benefits when consumed in moderation. Here are some potential benefits of black coffee:

Antioxidants: Coffee is a rich source of antioxidants, particularly chlorogenic acid. Antioxidants help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, potentially reducing the risk of certain chronic diseases.

Improved Mental Alertness: The caffeine in coffee can enhance cognitive function and increase alertness, which can be particularly beneficial in the morning or during periods of low energy.

Physical Performance: Caffeine in coffee can improve physical performance by increasing adrenaline levels, which can enhance endurance and strength during exercise.

Reduced Risk of Certain Diseases: Some studies suggest that moderate coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of certain diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer (such as liver and colorectal cancer).

Mood Enhancement: Coffee consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of depression and a potential improvement in mood due to its effects on neurotransmitters in the brain.

It's important to note that while black coffee has its benefits, excessive consumption can lead to negative health effects:

Insomnia and Restlessness: Excessive caffeine intake, especially later in the day, can interfere with sleep patterns, leading to insomnia and restlessness.

Digestive Issues: Some people may experience gastrointestinal discomfort or acid reflux as a result of consuming coffee, especially on an empty stomach.

Increased Heart Rate and Blood Pressure: Caffeine can temporarily increase heart rate and blood pressure, which might be problematic for individuals with certain cardiovascular conditions.

Dependency and Withdrawal: Regular consumption of caffeine can lead to dependency, and suddenly stopping or reducing intake can cause withdrawal symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and irritability.

Bone Health: Excessive caffeine intake might interfere with calcium absorption and potentially impact bone health over the long term.

Individual Variability: People's responses to caffeine can vary widely. Some individuals are more sensitive to its effects, while others can tolerate higher amounts without negative consequences.

nta, but most analysts (serious ones) that i follow fully expect the south to continue to be in play well into 2024.

the UAF simply does not have the man power backed up by appropriate resources to just rush to the coast and push them all out. even if Tokmak becomes unusable for Russia, they can still supply the rest of their troops throughout the regions. Very slowly, but they have enough trucks and conscripts to do it.

A more reasonable take is that it will make Russian positions north and northwest of Melitopol increasingly unviable. When those are recaptured what happens next depends on Russia's actions. It would expose the flanks of Russian defensive positions to the east, but Russia should have time to reposition. Depending on Russian strength Ukraine could also push west of Melitopol and head south to try the same strat and reduce Melitopol to only one supply route. I'm expecting, if not a big rout, rapid gains within the next few weeks but more like another Kherson than a full cut of the southern front.

                >but Russia should have time to reposition.
That begs the questions whether they (then) are still capable of doing so (e.g. the Ukrainians target and destroy entrenching tools like excavators or special engineering vehicles) and if they are willing to do so - it would be an admission that they lost control and can't regain it.

Keeping Tokmak broken cuts off access to everywhere west of there, other than the longer route through Crimea. If the Russians lose both Tokmak AND the Crimean Bridge, rail support is gone for everything west of Tokmak and Rus army presence in that region can only be supplied by road or air. Or ship I guess, if they're mad enough to try.

resupply by air would also be very risky, you either get blown up by SAMs or get blown up in the runway by drones

if russia loses the railway, then their best route for resupply, is driving their few, poorly maintained trucks through partisan infested roads

shits fucked big time for the ruskies if tokmak falls or the railroad gets cut, it could potentially dash any hope of "freezing" the conflict as it stands, which is a strategy some russians wanted to implement

You forget how long Russia is, most of these rail cars have already traveled thousands of km to get there, a 15 day trip via Donetsk turning into a 16 day trip via Kerch isn't the massive handicap you seem to think it is. It's not nothing, but it isn't much. They really need to knock out the Kerch rail line for Tokmak to really cripple their logistics.

Hello, my dear child. I've missed you too, and it warms my heart to hear your voice again. I know how tired you must be, and I'm here to help you drift off to sleep, just like I used to. Close your eyes and imagine a peaceful field where your worries can gently fade away. And speaking of fading away, let me tell you about the adventures of today.

Today, in Tokmak, the brave warriors of NATO joined forces with their allies to protect the realm. There was a fierce battle against those mischievous orcs who always seemed to stir up trouble. Our valiant soldiers fought with honor and courage, standing strong to defend the land we hold dear. As the sun set and darkness fell, the clash of steel against steel echoed through the hills.

In the end, my dear, the orcs were defeated, and the land was once again safe. Many orcs were vanquished, their hopes of causing chaos thwarted by the unity and strength of the NATO forces. So now, my sweet child, as you close your eyes and drift off to sleep, remember that even in the face of darkness, there are those who stand up for what's right and protect the ones they love.

Rest now, and may dreams of peace and bravery fill your night. I'll always be here watching over you. Goodnight, my dear.

A member of the Akhmat battalion was quoted by Russian media as calling the drones “Baba Yaga”—an ogress or witch from Slavic folklore who snatches and eats children. Except according to him, this battlefield “Baba Yaga” also has massive claws capable of carrying troops off into the sky. “Such large drones, only slightly more modernized, have previously been used by the enemy… in order to steal our wounded. The drone is equipped with special devices that look like claws, with which it captures a person who is not able to run away, hide or fight [the drone] off,” the soldier was quoted as saying. He said these drones hunt for prey at night and can only be destroyed by flamethrower or grenade launcher.

How many times has PrepHole predicted the collapse of Crimea? Just off the top of my head at least 3 times since the start of the war. Every time they’d work themselves up over one thing or another, post Twitter screencaps "proving" Russians were running away from the region and the UA was about to cut the land or water bridge, etc. And always, ALWAYS turn out to be a nothingburger. Why don’t you guys get tired of gaslighting yourselves?

What kind of dumb logic is this? Tokmak could easily be shelled by basebleed shells and HIMARS for a year now, yet the offensive still fell flat. Not to mention Ukraine cannot afford to shell the city like it's Bakhmut since they don't have the number of HE shells to turn it into a crater.

They already did that when fleeing across the river from Kherson city. Basically using civies as hostages and daring ukies to shoot them. Standard mongol tactics.

It doesn't take that much infrastructure to unload a train, pretty much just a platform and you can do without unless you've moving vehicles and they only need a ramp or crane.

But they do, stations and switches are the main target to deny rail, tracks are replaceable in hours.
