the islands are defended by the 18th Machine Gun Artillery Division consisting of 3,500 troops

The division has one air defense battalion. But a few years ago, the division was augmented with TORs, BUKs, T-80s, Ka-52s, a Kilo class sub, and a Bastion missile defense system. Due to the war, a chunk of the division was sent to fight at Bakhmut

It's possible all the long range AD is now gone and all they have are BUKs and TORs

I don't know what's going on at the moment. They should have a couple hundred left..except Ukrainians blew up 4 refineries yesterday, a command center, an ammo depot and 2 airstrips all in Russia.
They are currently latching another swarm at this very moment. A couple hundred. Even with all the damage Russia has taken they aren't even defending command posts, airstrips, refineries ammo depots. I mean what's actually going on here. They should have at least 200-300. Left on the line alone what are they actually defending at this point

        >2000
Just taking that as 100% completely true: that'd be genuinely unsurprising to see almost totally depleted at this point given the attrition rates we've seen. We've seen a LOT of missiles fired trying to intercept drones, decoys, and actual GMLRS/ATACMS/etc, and generally failing. As well as anti-aircraft use. Much more then 1:1, we're almost 2.5 years into the war and at like 6-10:1 that'd run down even a few thousand, even assuming lots weren't blown up on the ground. But we've seen tons of videos of S300 launchers destroyed with more missiles in them/around them, when SAMs go up it's super obvious with all the pretty explosions and burning solid rocket fuel. And there have been some that never made it that far in the various ammo dumps that have been destroyed. So yeah, if Russia had enough raw production to keep up with demand or close that'd be one thing, but no sign of that. And SAMs are a "tipping point" sort of thing: when you start having to be careful with them, and radars get destroyed and such, you tend to lose more and more because they derive a lot of their effectiveness from having overlapping networks and aggressive usage.

Easy to believe too, Russia doesn't and never has feared NATO invasion. It's always been obvious that was all bullshit. What they fear is internal revolution if their shitty subhuman mongol rape baby serfs ever got the idea that maybe better lives are possible.

          Anonymous

          >What they fear is internal revolution
they also fear the nato umbrella making their targets immune to russian military interventions when they deem it necessary as seen with moldova and georgia or when their "diplomatic" efforts don't bear any fruit and the target country still moves towards the west culturally and economically, as happened with ukraine.
russians can't into soft power but still try to play ball as to not get on the west's bad side, until they've exhausted all viable options and only a military campaign with the goal to bite off some chunk of land, that prevent's said country from joining nato, is on the table.
first half of putin's reign was basically trying to subvert the west and appear as the reasonable and useful gas station while secretly he was planting zigger seeds all over europe and america

Japan. Time to bring the Kuril islands back!

It's remarkable just how severe the difference is, but it is literally Japan, famous for autism about 'doing things right' and Eastern Russia, where most houses don't have running water, much less indoor toilets.

I wonder if we'll see Japan take back the Kuril's in our lifetime?

Japan taking Kuril could actually happen an be big /k/ino

          >only ~16k people live on the disputed islands
          easily removable
          >60% are ethnic Ukrainians
          potential for internal uprise
Russia already banned a group last year for it
          >18th Machine Gun Artillery Division mostly deployed to Ukraine
          no on there to defend
          >islands are not strategically important to Russia
why bother if Japan wants them back?
only issue are potential US troops there

could also imagine a buyout if Russia runs out of reserves in 2025/26

          >inb4 why would Japan want such a shithole
national pride, more buffer zone but mostly to resolve the border conflict
less border conflicts means mean more resources to focus on important issues

            Anonymous

also some interesting views on the conflict

            >new Russian constitution from 2020 outright refuses to concede even 1sqm of "Russian soil" to anyone
            >it was NOT added on Putins initiative but from a nationalist party
            >Putin himself would have likely negotiated further instead of basically closing the diplomatic channel

internally the issue is relatively clear though
            >only ~15% of Russians are for giving back the islands
            >but over ~1200 people (of 16k) in disputed Kuril regions signed pro Japan paper in 2018
which is huge for any "petition"

            then there is China
            >Mao pro Japan
            >Xi changed attitude in 2023 to "neutral"
            >other China politicians are slightly pro Japan
            >on weibo you often read people drawing parallels to Taiwan
            >chinese public generally supports historic land claims
so China wouldn't support Russia in any kind of conflict over the Kuril Islands
that topic is way too sensitive domestically

If Russia was actually "afraid" of NATO invading (who would even give the invasion order?) the last thing they'd do is pull defences from NATO borders (exactly what they've done and are doing, since they know perfectly well that NATO would never attack)

They fear that NATO will spark color revolutions or prop up democratically elected puppets in every state that neighbors Russia so that every border Russia has is occupied by NATO members or countries that allow NATO bases.
For the same reason that the US does not desire PLA bases in Canada or Mexico, Russia does not want NATO Ukraine.
At this point people will say ‘it’s not Russia’s choice what their neighbors do, if they want to elect pro-western leaders that’s their own choice’ but this sort of argument leaves the realm of weapons and enters the sphere of politics, which has its own board

That's in most cases just bad reporting. They counted a lot of rocket pew pew shooters as full S-300 system. Russia as a lot of them but their 64N6Je phased array radars are very rare. And these are the ones you crucially need, in order to hit something.

It seems that the Soviet strategy relied more on deterrence, than actual combat power. So they calculated the minimum amount of phased array radar units needed to defend the borders and important areas, and surrounded them by as many starter units as possible.

If the west claims to have 85 working patriot units, it means they have 85 working combat units consisting of starter units and radars.
Word around is, that Russia had only 65 64N6Je Radar stations at the beginning of the offensive and nobody actually knew how many of them have been actually combat ready or working at all.

you need to know the the difference between an enemy fighter jet and an civilian airplane or between an enemy drone and one of your own helicopters, if you fail at this you perform as poorly as russian air defense

The fact that western countries are incapable of attacking leaves Russia with completely free hands to position units.
Wars used to work very differently in the past when you had to keep some units at your borders to stop opportunistic enemies from taking advantage of your troop concentrations. When facing democracies you can rest assured they will never attack you.

Nobody is invading Russia and everyone knows it. Because they are a nuclear power, end of story. Things like the Kuril Islands garrison is just post-Soviet bureaucratic inertia so when the military was short on forces on the front Putin probably asked wha they were doing on an island no one is going to actually attack and told his people to move that shit. It takes leadership to wrestle bureaucracy. The counter to that is if the bureaucracy is too strong it can’t be controlled (ie the US military).

if Russia collapsed or offered to sell them absolutely, there's like 20k Russians there which is hardly a large number to handle.
The real interesting case would be Sakhalin, there's some prime resource potential there but the population is roughly 500k and 4/5 of that are Russians, so it would be more difficult to manage/hold without lots of voluntary migration a la Northern Kazakhstan

the Finns turned Karelia down because they'd be potentially adding like 600k slavs to a country of 5 million, 700k if they included Viipuri/Vyborg

China could stop constantly antagonizing their Asian neighbors, relinquish their moronic territorial disputes in the south, give up on Taiwan and establish friendly trade deals, tell Kim to ease off a bit, and put all their effort into reinforcing and supporting their, Japan, and Koreas claims against Russia. They could do a complete political image 180 while creating an idea of a strong united Asia against a European superpower bringing the entire region closer to their sphere and away form the US, but sadly chinks are too prideful for that shit after completely destroying all the culture they could actually take pride in.

Russia has been the best example in history of the true danger of corruption. This entire "SMO" is because Poutine believed he had control of a military and not a horde of poorly armed peasants since having a comparatively massive military budget doesn't mean a fricking thing if only 25% of that budget actually gets used on weapons instead of yachts.
