I love how the Rusnigs word their cope:

Today during a planned training flight in the Dzhankoy region of Crimea, a Mi-28 helicopter crashed
      >as a result of friendly fire.
The flight was carried out without ammunition, there is no destruction on the ground. Both pilots were killed. The preliminary cause of the crash is a technical failure
      >by the SAM missile crew.

They can shoot AMRAAMs. They tested it in early 2009. All they had to do was take an ATACMS pod and add AMRAAM ground launcher launch rails to the standard ATACMS pod, modify the software a little and done.

If a Su-34 crew (broadly equivalent to a late 90s F-15) just sailed right into AMRAAM launch parameters and got shot that's entirely on them and the Russians should be distancing themselves from the crew that got shot down.

I'm putting money on a Patriot launcher far the frick away from it's "maximum" dispersal distance. The book the Russian commanders had said the max distance was 1 mile, the Ukrainians did it at 45, the Su-34 flew right over the launcher and got nailed at Mach 3. That sounds like the exact sort of thing that the Russians would do.

    So RU telegrams claim 2 Mi-8, Su-34, Su-25.
My bet: some automated experimental half-assed made from Chinese shit system was installed on S300/400 to shutdown drone waves. 1 minute after turning it on it shutdown everything in the air at the moment, because drunk programmer forget to uncomment IFF check. Range supports that theory (40km between one of Mi-8 and Su-34).

      >IFF check

do the russians even have IFF transponders?

My understanding is that their iff transponders are Soviet era and as a result, Ukrainian planes show up as friendly as well.

Supposedly it's resulted in the Russians having to avoid using any plans that the Ukrainians also have in service towards the front.

Stinger makes sense for the Mi-8, but the Flankers would be too high and fast still above Russian territory, unless they were taken out near their airbase.

"Stingers could be here" he thought, "I've never been in this airspace before. There could be Stingers anywhere." The cool wind felt good through his cracked canopy. "I HATE STINGERS" he thought. Пoтoмy чтo мы пилoты reverberated his entire Mi-8, making it pulsate even as the free engine coolant circulated through his powerful thick veins and washed away his (merited) fear of MANPADS. "With a Mi-8, you can go anywhere you want" he said to himself, out loud.

The SU-35 is like, their best remaining plane right?

Would be hilarious if the problem is that everything it was put against was too low tech and slow for it to hit.

        >"Is that slow moving thing a decoy? I guess I won't hit it then."
        >"Something go through?! Did it go so fast I cannot find it?! Is it the new secret weapon?!"

The (former) problems with the Patriot are well documented. They were software problems - the grunt and civilian understanding of this is also based on things that happened in the Gulf fricking War on the trial by fire of ballistic systems, which had not been proven in combat up to that point
Shitting on the Patriot today because of shit that happened in the 90s would be like insisting today that Ford Explorers equipped with Firestone tires are prone to blowouts.
Hell most of the morons repeating this bit of military fuddlore don't even remember what a 1990s computer system LOOKED LIKE. Assuming they have the same problems is ludicrous.

    I predict this:
Now the Russians are in full panic mode and are seeing NATO aircraft anywhere, so they keep shooting at anything on the sky that moves.

Soon, there is going to be a command from high command "For fricks sake, those are our own aircraft, STOP SHOOTING!"
And then all the Russians are too afraid to shoot at anything for fear of drawing high command's wrath upon themselves.

And then Ukrainians are going to take advantage of the "we are too scared to shoot" mentality and start doing their own bombing runs in earnest.

This I have seen in my orb.

Manpads ambush seems like the lowest risk and easiest to execute. Ukies have been doing cross-broader raids the entire war, I'm sure they've figured out how to get in and out easily and safely.

AMRAAMs would make me coom so hard, but I dont think it's true ... just no evidence of that

S-300/Patriot is at the border is too risky, those assets are too valuable for Ukraine to risk them in a cool ambush

Friendly fire is probably the second most likely option, but imo even the Russians aren't moronic enough to blow 3-4 jets/helis out of the sky without realizing they are ALL friendlies

No, I'm talking about shit like actually operating them. ALL of them need to be stored in aircraft shelters at all times, and only roll out when there's absolutely certainly no MAXAR or Russian or Chinese military satellites around.

Also if they roll out and take off during the day they'll be spotted, and even at night plane spotters autists would be able to identify them. And once they're in the air Russian ELINT snoopers will probably figure out they're not just Fulcrums.

The F-117 was only able to be hidden, because Groom Lake was deep, deep into the desert, with fences and sentries many miles out. No space for that in Europe.

        Anonymous

But how does that help anything that Russia is trying to do? A war is run on money just as much as it is on weapons. You've been able to 'hit' Ukraine for fricking ages. You've been trying. The only way you can prevent Ukraine getting stronger is to interdict the supplies coming from Poland and you're not going to do that until it has crossed into Ukraine. As much as I want Russia to attack Poland so we can get this war over with (one way or another) I don't see even Russia being that moronic.

Because they think that their government is holding back, for the purpose of adhering to international laws.
And as such, if they declare them as terrorists they could "get the gloves of" and pull an America vs Iraq move.

    Theories for russian aircraft crashes:
    >MALD works really fricking well and Russian air defence is in full panic mode right now
    >MANPADS teams smuggled into occupied territory
    >Ukraine moved their Patriot system right up to the line of contact as a joke

    >Russian SAM crews are drinking the radar coolant

There is no panic in the direction of aviation. The air defense personnel were mostly mobilised. Already more experienced air defense operators are moving to reinforce, air defense is working and the friendly fire will be stopped.
