Turkey is trying to make their way into the market as the Slavshit alternative. To that end, this is a pretty sensible upgrade package, there's a lot of M60s running around in the 2nd and 3rd world that should never face down an Abrams, but WILL be dealing with T-55 through -64 models. The L7 is just about as proven as a tank gun gets, and the turret face is a substantial improvement. Combined with the engine upgrades and 1.5 ton weight savings on the new turret, and it's got a lot more speed to play to that strong turret, compounding the survivability increase. Thermals are always a good thing, and, of course, being an upgrade package instead of a new tank offers substantial savings compared to buying a new tank. It will probably be one of the better tanks running around Africa for the next 20 years.

          >Turkey is trying to make their way into the market as the Slavshit alternative
That's what I'm thinking too. Even that new turret looks similar to the T-90M's.

AFAIK it's only a tech demonstrator at the moment and no hard numbers have been published on its reload speed or any pics of what it looks like on the inside. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if what we seen isn't functional at all, I don't think I've ever seen the gun elevate

Also, the driver can't get in or out unless the turret is turned 90 degree.

Why arent they upgrading this part?

      Anonymous

probably owing to weight or space constraints
upping the hull armor doesnt isnt as worth it as the turret, because its not hit as often as the turret but it will off-balance the tank more seriously
you also cant just slap a composite array directly on top of the armor, since then it will just block the drivers vision block

if you ever wondered why the T-72 has a thinned area in front of the driver, thats why
the area couldnt be as thick as the rest without obscuring the drivers vision
and when they increased its thickness on the T-72A, they had to delete a few of the anti-spall ridges because they would have blocked the drivers view

I've been following this thing. It looks pretty fricking good. Ammo is behind an armored bulkhead with blowout panels and it has an autoloader too which is pretty sweet. Has new thermals, optics, and true hunter killer ability too. It's also supposed to get Zaslin/Pulat active protection systems too.

They are, the final product will have extra armor and ERA.

Is this saying the upgraded turret is 1.5 tons lighter than the m60 turret? How?

          Anonymous

M60 turret is thick as frick and is solid steel. Modern composites are much lighter while offering superior protection. Geometry also changed. It's probably heavier though after ERA bricks are added.

            This.

Don't know how precisely accurate pic related is, but it should help generally convey how thick composite armor arrays can get without horrifically compromising the weight of the tank compared to pure steel armor. King Tigers back in WW2 are about the same weight as most Abrams models, but only had 185mm of steel armor at their thickest.

The commander has an independently-moving optics set, and he can override the gunner's controls to slew the turret onto whatever he's looking at. Really cuts down on the time it takes to go from the commander seeing something to getting a shot downrange, especially when presented with multiple targets, because the gunner can focus on one target while the commander sets up to swing him right over as soon as the first goes down.

when you reduce the profile of the turret it's no longer the part that is most likely to be hit

No, it still is. Ballistics a b***h. This is why T-series, while being tiny, had its armour focused on the turret.

There are many M60 upgrades. israelites probably have the most, fielded to this day.

        Anonymous

        that's completely wrong
the only M60 variant they have in service or storage is the AVLB variant, which is a bridge layer and not a tank. and it's been so for over a decade.

No, it still is. Ballistics a b***h. This is why T-series, while being tiny, had its armour focused on the turret.

the aim point is central mass
the smaller the turret the more likely the hull to be hit because it's closer to the central mass

in 2014 they announced they'll try to sell them and if they fail they'll be scrapped
and i couldn't find any article about any sale, so they were probably scrapped

nowadays in the IDF theyre used as gate guardians or as targets

It would unironically be a good vehicle in Ukraine. Either the Turkish or the Leonardo M60 upgrades would be more capable than any Russian tank they'd realistically face and far cheaper to produce than like a Leopard 2A7 or similar.
