I just picked up a jd2 tube bender for making my own roll cage but I want to practice on a project before I go and frick up my main hoop. What should I make? 49cc trike? tweaker traps? strange tiktok contraptions?
I've got dies for 1.625", 1.25", and 1" round, plus a 1" square
also if anyone knows where I can get free or definitely not pirated tube bending software pls let me know

What kind of roll cage are you trying to make? Does it have to be compliant with a sanctioning body? What would you need tube bending software for? I build my own cages and space frames for motorsports and typically use whatever open source drafting and CAD software.
Can you point to any good recourses for learning this? Or is it just experience?
Build your own race car is a website that has a quick, high level overview on things and points to some pretty good resources as far as books and software. Formula SAE has some decent resources as well. I've been a mechanic and a master tech for a few years now, worked in various machine and fabrication shops along the way too. A lot of what I know is just stuff I've picked up along the way.
Just a standard 8.50 nhra cage with some extra bells and whistles. I'm only looking to do it in cad so I can get a bend table with springback compensation built in and stuff

What are the bells and whistles you had in mind? Unless you were doing some structural analysis or simulation I would just draft it up.
A chair or bench or similar furniture parts can probably be based at least in part on the same bends, meaning that if you get your practice ones dialed in you could just make the real parts right then, or adapt funky ones to your side project.

the secret to bending tubes is reference marks. stick a piece of tube in it, put a sharpie mark at any point it touches any of the tool. Like just straight up go crazy with it, any point the tube touches something you can trace a line on, trace it. Bend that shit.
This is honestly a shit description but it would be impossible to go at it with better details
anyways once you have a 90 degree or 45 degree or whatever bend you can be like "hmm lets see that mark was there and now its 3 inches past the bend, so that means... ."
