Tropicool Roof Coating

I own a single wide trailer I the Appalachians where it rains 33% of the time. The trailer was manufactured in 1983 but the previous owner put a new roof on it.

Is this stuff as good as people claim? I don't have any leaks, I'm more interested in the UV reflecting aspect of it.

I work with silicone a lot and I would only use this if the roof is basically at the end of its life anyway.

Under regular water exposure and sun the silicone is gonna last 3 to 5 years. Maybe even just 2 years. Then it's gonna start peeling and mildewing everywhere. I wouldn't apply this over a good roof.

Also if it's white I think your roof is gonna look pretty bad, I would get it in black or gray

      You're thinking of Acrylic.

      >Also if it's white I think your roof is gonna look pretty bad, I would get it in black or gray
He specifically wanted it for the "UV reflecting", which I assume he means for heat reasons in the summer, so white is the preferred choice here

I'd imagine this stuff would last longer than 5 years since its going on a roof but who the frick knows anymore

I appreciate the input guys but the roof is in great shape so I'm going to try this stuff. It's cheap enough and claims to be water proof so we'll see. I just like my home ice cold.

That reminds me (somewhat) of the roof coating on school busses and shit, which has the same purpose youre looking for. Godspeed anon

WARNING. Not all coatings interchange and the lesser coatings are still porous to slow moisture intrusion making them a scab over your roof which traps moisture facilitating corrosion. I learned the hard way.

BTW my roofing bro says his government jobs even specify Henry's on some new roofing. I've used their asphalt on my home roofs (galvanized barn metal reused in 1965, tough stuff) and it behaves perfectly.

I would not use lesser coatings because removing failed (properly applied) cheap elastomeric manually was not fricking fun. Contractors rightly laugh at those.

What this anon said, it will look like shit in a few years due to mold and other shit.

Disagree on the white roof thing, it's the best color, the sun can frick off.

Anon, the silicone will still be on the roof, but it will be full of brown/black splotches. It will also not adhere properly everywhere and probably start peeling off. Because I doubt OP will properly clean and prep his roof.

yes, if you a redneck person that can't afford a new roof it can extend the life of you current roof by 7+ years.

you have to completely clean the roof before using it. it can go over any kind of roofing material.

I have a enclosed trailer and put two coats of tropicool on the aluminum roof two years ago in order to keep the inside temp reasonable during the summer and it works amazing.

Before putting it on if you were inside the trailer you couldn't touch the underside of the roof for more than a couple seconds, after applying it the roof only gets a few degrees higher than ambient. Honestly made a tremendous improvement.

Just be careful because even after it's fully cured it's soft and can be gouged / scratched easily.

      >after it's fully cured it's soft and can be gouged / scratched easily.
It's also slippery as frick and stays that way forever. Have to be VERY careful if you need to go up on the roof for whatever reason.

I wonder if there is any indication or possibility of mixing in some of the aluminum oxide no skid/grip stuff for garage floors into it so its not as bad

Yes it is, moron. If there is any moisture or dew on the roof or your shoes it will be very very slippery.

even IF it was slippery WHO THE HELL CARES no one goes for a morning walk on their roof, you moron.

My bro uses it because he did military contracts where it is specified. We played with test samples we made. After application make a large blob or several from leftovers then cut it with knife after cure time. If sample is cured so is your coating.

Recoating years later after cheap silicone moisture trap garbage is horrible, and I learned the hard way on my container shop (and now always buy "one trip" grade containers not storage grade trash).

                Buy the Henry's.

So rope off or don't go there. I tie off to my truck or trailer from the opposite side of any roof with much of a pitch. Easy as frick.

I have white on my roof looks bad, mixing in some yellow will still reflect while hiding any oil stains from decaying plants.

      My roof is uncoated aluminium.
Oxidized so it has dull whiteish look, nothing grows on it.

Scab here, shit works if you re coat yearly. Uv reflection keeps my building cooler but the top floor still kills anything stuck in the hallway. Better then a black roof but silver galv roofing has a higher reflection rate then this.
