Trench coats in the military

Does the all weather trench coat still serve a purpose now? I know the military for some reason still keeps them around.

MARPAT is unironically great in Eastern NC and has consistently done well in independent testing in different environments
The only prequel I'll call good is Revenge of the Sith. The others still suck. And Return of the Jedi was ruined by the teddy bears. It deserves more hate

Did coats 2.0 release? Why would they no longer have a purpose? You wear it, that's it.

      >Did coats 2.0 release? Pretty much; the athletic/outdoor wear revolution fundamentally changed fitment, construction and materials used. For the same reason everyone wears hoodies and joggers as an “outfit” now, when our grandparents wore suits and dresses every day without occasion.

We wear Arcteryx over Burberry for the same reason we use ARs over Garands, sovl doesn’t matter when you’re in a trench.

Sadly I might have to agree. GDI soldiers looked like goddamn construction workers in Renegade but they won the war. They went after the burlap sack look of WWII American infantry, rather than the "le trad kino & based Nazis with fashion" look.

Nod and GDI were originally supposed to look intimidating and realistic for Renegade, but they changed Nod into neon red NERF/Paintball player twinks, and GDI into construction workers, mid-development because of 9/11, Global War of Terror, and the associated sensitivities. Can't make parents and 12 year old players think they're playing a war game when there's a war going on. LOL.

Harder to regulate body temp in poncho. A good trench will vent just as well as poncho but keeps out more moisture. Ponchos became popular because they double as shelter and makeshift bodybag

I agree, they look like dogshit. No way to make a thin nylon coat look nice in contrast to starched and pressed ceremonial uniform items. The Army's wool overcoat looks absolutely kino, but 3rd Infantry Regiment is the last unit to get issued them.

The Navy's version is the exact same. They are both the same NSN in fact. Both branches wear them with the top button buttoned, I have no idea why the Soldier in anon's pic is wearing his that way. The Coast Guard is the only branch who is required to wear theirs with tie showing, at least for ceremonies.

the actual DSCP A-2 jackets are an issue-only item, not available through AAFES. even then in the supply system they're nowhere as much as $1000.
you must have been through Incirlik and the Turkish leather jacket people tried to give you a high-ball amount for their custom jackets and you fell for it. Even with those Turks you could haggle down to $300 for an A-2 jacket with better quality than issue.

It's 500 bucks at every single Army Clothing Sales. The Army version also does not have space for patches like the Air Force version.

I'd like it if it were actually issued, but it is nowhere near worth the 500 dollars if you're never even gonna wear the fucking thing. Plus, the Ike jacket looks better with the AGSU.

Trench coats were originally made for field use. So those coats can still be used for field work if necessary. In the 50s-90s, many soldiers across the world still utilize trench/great coats in the field.

Gonna have to say true, not even because of the desert, but because the internal liner is 100% deadly polyester, and the all weather coat has no shoulder flexibility. And as a dress uniform item it wouldn't be on the packing list for deployment.
