Trench Arts and Crafts

So i recently acquired a 40mm grenade case and thought it would be a cool shot glass. Im not a fan of heavy metal poising so i figured i should clean it out and then probably insert a liner of some sort in it. Would it be better to punch out the inner bottom and nestle a normal glass inside? Could I electroplate it with copper? Should i instead try coating it with a food safe resin? Anyone else like making trench art?

I've got a similar problem, I've got the bottom 6 inches of a 57mm shell that I wanna drink out of. I already sandblasted the filth out of the inside and polished the outside.

Where'd you get a 57mm case? You on a boat that has one?

BTW next time polishing will be much easier with fresh lemon juice and salt. Literally rub half a lemon with salt on it on the brass next time. It'll shine it up and show you machining/manufacturing marks real quick and you won't have the tarnished brass dust all over.

It's been a bit since I polished it but I used some Peek that we had kicking around. It didn't have a primer in it but I managed to get one, gotta make a tool or something to spin it in. Might get the mechanics to braze a handle onto it but I haven't decided yet.

Haha yeah. Drinking from the shells.
That's why you want to make them safe for contact with skin and liquids.

See video about that lemon thing; it gives you this weird pinkish finish and then you can simply start polishing low to high grit off this; I go straight to #0000 steel wool. Also what is up with your video? It plays like 2-3 seconds then tells me it's corrupt or unplayable.

Have you thought of simply cleaning the thing? It's fricking just brass.

brass has lead in it moron

Not necessarily. Free machining brass does, and maybe some other alloys, but cartridge case brass does not (nominally) contain any lead.

Be careful drinking out of brass, anythign acidic will corrode it and you do not wanna drink brass salts. Plate it with silver, if you can. Dunno how to just do the inside, I guess you can paint the outside with something and then scrub it off.

Is there a reason you recommend silver over copper or other metals? I had brought up copper only because i know its great at preventing stuff from growing on it. As a side note the M169 case is seemingly made of aluminum not brass

The copper is what you don't want, copper salts are why brass dissolving is bad. Yes it prevents bacteria, but, that's why it's bad for you too. Silver is naturally antiseptic but basically harmless. You can drink a stupid amount of silver nitrate and all it does is turn you blue.

ok interesting ill take that into account

          Just reload it, anon.

sadly the mk19 i shot it out of belongs to uncle sam so there's not much point.

I didn't know it was made out of Al. That can make the plating weird. You can probably still brass plate it though? That's the classic look people think of anyway I think.

From my limited research its not too much harder to electroplate AL you just need a slightly different setup

I would probably find a suitable plastic shot glass and sand it down to fit inside the case so you can get a little more volume out of it and not put your lips on the aluminum/stainless steel/whatever it is. You could also clean it with solvent and put a dab of aquarium silicon in the primer hole

I'll probably go that route if the electroplating fricks up

are you fricking stupid or something? precisely ZERO "silverware" is made of silver in 2024. "silverware" you buy from the supermarket is just plated pig metal

            i'll pick "or something"
yeah, thats why i said SILVERWEAR not DINNERWEAR, you stupid fricking nig
no shit the fork that says "stainless steel" isn't made of silver, if i'd to have believed its made of silver, i'd have to be as moronic as you
i can still go to a antique shop & get actual silverwear, maybe not the detroit ghetto you live in, but elsewhere across the human parts of the US, yeah, i fricking can
maybe try actually having a base knowledge on both history AND the current conversation at large, before you say blanket statements that are utterly fricking demeaning only to yourself

i mean, misspelling wear instead of ware is pretty american, not knowing the difference between dinnerware or utensils and actual silverware is a real ESL moment like those are different terms n shit

I just bought a friend a late 1800s silverware set as a wedding gift. He was overjoyed until he called me a month later to learn he is now a slave to polishing it lol.

copper is nowhere as bad as lead, lots of brass has lead in it. i doubt he'd get copper poisoning from using a shot glass, and if he did ingest some copper, it would be excreted unless he has cholestasis or wilson's disease.

a couple coatings of clear food safe resin would do the trick i imagine, not much else needed
assuming it already holds a shot, you should either just mark where it stops or fill shell with resin until you got the amount you need for the alcohol to be at the rim

plate the insides with stainless steel if you can. You can get copper poisoning from brass, and you can get silver poisoning from silver plating if you drink acidic stuff. Gold poisoning is also a potential issue.

Those cases aren't that deep s you're not getting that much liquid in them particularly if you end up sealing off the expansion chamber
