Tora Bora

Why was the Afghan War so similar to the Vietnam War?

20 years of counterinsurgency then a last minute evacuation by aircraft from the capital. Guerrilla warfare, plainclothes disguises, ambushes and improvised traps and munitions.

Saw these diagrams of the Afghan mountain fortress in Tora Bora, just South of Jalalabad above the Pakistan border. Made me think of the extensive natural and artificial underground fortifications of Vietnam. The mountains and forests and caves, the artificial tunnels and ambushes.

Was the war in Afghanistan the Vietnam War of our time?

No, Vietnam was more deadlier. But both conflicts had the U.S. withdraw troop presence years before the collapse.

It wasn't. The north vietnamese were a real nation and had a real army, even if they were defeated everytime they faced opendly the US.
Afghans are just a bunch of goatfuckers and child rapists afraid to work for a living, so the US got tired of them.

Did this really exist as depicted or was that a media invention based on some analysts fever dream?

Made up by Bush II's R*myself.

      >Tora Bora has been variously described by the Western media as an impregnable cave fortress housing 2000 men complete with a hospital, a hydroelectric power plant, offices, a hotel, arms and ammunition stores, roads large enough to drive a tank into, and elaborate tunnel and ventilation systems.[54] Both the British and American press has published elaborate plans of the base. When presented with such plans in an NBC interview on Meet the Press, Donald Rumsfeld, the US Secretary of Defense, said, "This is serious business, there's not one of those, there are many of those".[55][56][57]

      >When Tora Bora was eventually captured by the U.S., British and Afghan troops, no traces of the supposed 'fortress' were found despite painstaking searches in the surrounding areas. Tora Bora turned out to be a system of small natural caves housing, at most, 200 fighters. While arms and ammunition stores were found, and while Soviet tanks had been driven into some of the caves,[58] there were no traces of the advanced facilities claimed to exist.[57][59]

I mean there was no version of North Vietnam nor was their anything like a Tet-Offensive, no rolling thunder equivalent. It was just like the vietcong fighting a much less involved U.S. and equally as useless ARVN

Pic is based on fake info. Tora Bora turned out to have just a handful of tunnels that guys could squeeze into for a bit.

This was fake, but China actually has built shit like this on a titanic scale due to its paranoid leadership and because they don't know what to do with their huge trade surplus and so they plow it into building shit.

The rural mountains have super fortresses while the megacities, like all megacities, have thousands of miles of tunnels going up to thousands of feet down into the Earth. Like, NYCs water carrier descends below 2,000 feet down in some places and has tunnels where heavy machinery can drive two abreast no problem, well below where a nuke could penetrate.

The USA being invaded by China is ridiculous because the US Navy is so far ahead and because the US population is awash in arms and would resist incredibly hard. The US could never invade China because they have retarded forts to slow shit down, but even more so because you'd take two cities of 10 million people in epic scale urban combat and right behind that there would be another 4 cities of 15 million people, then another 2 with 20 million people. It'd take time, equipment, and lots of lives and China has literally hundreds of millions of military aged people to throw into meat grinders. The two can only contain each other by cutting off access to world markets. China is almost the size of the US with Alaska included and can do autarky in a way a place like Nazis Germany never could. The US can also do autarky if it needs tooz especially if it annexes Canada (annexing Siberia is an easy feat for China so long as Russia doesn't fire nukes as well, so in a world war alliance they could easily do it to hold on to resources).

They're legit 1984 tier powers where it is impossible for one to conquer the other. Pic is retarded Chinese super forts. The EU could be like this if it wasn't so super divided. As it stands, it's easy to see an invader picking them apart bit by bit and some folks only wanting to do sanctions.
