This comes from "It is better to have and not need than to need and not have". Which is a very good saying, however many people take this to the extreme. I was once one of the worst offenders when it comes to carrying too much shit out of fear of being unprepared. I have since made friends with lightweight backpacker types and I have adjusted accordingly. I now have a healthy medium of being lightweight and reasonably prepared. You get the idea.

Whats wrong with giving your troops adequate supplies?

I don't think that's the problem. Just a bunch of stuff that never gets used. They should auction it off, people will overpay and in many cases will even pay more than the government commissioned the item for.

        >They should auction it off
It'll have to be since so much of this junk cannot be returned to the warehouse.

Doesn't matter if it is junk, people will pay for it. And in many cases they will overpay. Even if the military sells for a loss, this is stuff they couldn't give away. They're not sending it to Ukraine or Israel. Why not sell it?

            >, this is stuff they couldn't give away
I disagree. In many cases these are items that have to be inventoried probably because of the purchase price.

Doesn't hurt to try, put it up for auction.

So....I'm an autist who buy shelf stable grocery items in bulk when they are on sale, I enter them into an Excel file with volume, price, store -- and expiration date...surely the US Army must have a list of what they have and when it expires, and a way for the system to alert them to when it's about to expire, sort items by how close they are to expiring and then implement plans to deal with it?

The Russians were caught with MRE that expire in 2016, one one hand it shows how unprepared and possibly how corrupted they are -- that Russian Generals must have sold off the non-expired food...but why weren't the Best Before 2016 rations sold earlier than? I think those were probably rations made in preparation for the 2014 Invasion of Crimea that were left over -- as soon as that was done they SHOULD have sold it online and made more in batches that should also be sold before it expires if the troops aren't consuming it in time.

This, maybe open the auction to military otakus in Japan too.

There should always be a thing to deal with supplies that aren't used up in time rather than let them collect dust and expire, such as selling or gifting vaccines and PPE to third world countries when they are near expiration.

Anything worthwhile that's off the books gets taken by anyone brave enough to take it. Go to any soldiers/marines/air/seamans house and it will be full of liberated gear. The stuff left over is broken garbage or inventoried.

Its stupid that modern units can have a headquarters building and a motor pool and there still is too much dogshit that they have to pack it all in the shipping container.

The Taliban can start a show...

They could trade American gear to Russia for gold and food but if caught, the Americans might actually drone them again.

What exactly would they trade, why would even Russians give a frick? You morons act as though we left behind M1 tanks, probably the single nicest piece of gear left behind were MRAPs that will fall apart in a few years without the correct maintenance
