Any more specific questions? Also, that piece, while cut wonderfully, will crack, it's a matter of time, I guarantee it. If it's in a basement maybe not.

Why will that piece inevitably crack? What's different about a basement that would prevent the cracking?
Serious question btw, never done any tile work before.

They are very fragile, and any shifting of that structure around the shower will cause really fine hairline cracks. Over time they grow. I typically see this where there are cutouts for the jam or like your photo, shower niches. In a basement less movement, usually it's in a corner on concrete, two exterior walls etc.

a thicker grout line at the top filled with grout caulk would stop that

It's porcelain not ceramic does that make a difference? And I've got full adhesion of mortar no air pockets.

I guess I should have specified. How do you install the Jollyrail/Rounded. Do you install it all first and then cut the tile to fit within the borders or install up to that point and cut to length and insert when you set your final row?

The niche had to be in that corner because it can't be installed on exterior walls in my state because of R value for insulation. Well the house is going to be sold so if it happens later hopefully I won't hear from them lol

I want to knock down the edges of the tile cuts so it's smooth because this porcelain chips rather easy even if cut slow with a new and dressed blade. What should I use to smooth the edges, sanding stone or some of those resin sanding discs?

Hey, hopefully you are still around, been at work.
        >It's porcelain not ceramic does that make a difference?

Absolutely, porcelain is a lot better, that said, not all porcelain is the same, some is a lot more durable.

        >want to knock down the edges of the tile cuts so it's smooth because this porcelain chips rather easy even if cut slow with a new and dressed blade.

Typically we cut even porcelain on a wet saw with water and get away with few chips, but if you do want to knock it back I suggest using a hand pad somewhere between 60 and 200g with water. It will likely leave black residue in response to the porcelain so keep acetone on hand.

picrel is one of those pads. If you are really comfortable, you can use a stone on your grinder, but it's overkill imo.

Tip: use lotion on your hands after tiling. The mortar causes your hands to get rough and it makes it rough to finger your wife. She wants your hands to be delicate and soft

More out of curiosity, but what mil EPDM do you use for the shower pan if not Schluter? Are you basically treating it like a commerical roof using bonding adhesive and cured/uncured rubber corner flashings with primer? Schluter seems like a good system at first, but if it really was amazing you would figure someone like Firestone or Carlisle (maybe Tectum) would copy their system and use it for commerical roofing applications where a roof deck is required

I want to use commercial roof coating in this rental shower. It's slumlords but I want the second shower operational again. I'm trying to cut the costs down on all materials enough to convince myself to replace most of the bath.

Silicone, elastomeric, or liquid butyl rubber?

Just unfibered roof coating I have on hand. I mean Redgard is only $60.

I have tile and thinset on hand. The shower plumbing works. If I can pour a pan then tile the floor and shower surround for <$400 then I'll probably do it.

When grouting or applying mortar, you want to have more than you need on the trowel and really carry it. Trying to get the exact amount wastes time.

    >tip
ALWAYS shuffle your tile boxes by lot number, even mixing tiles as often as you can. Sometimes they look great until certain light hits it and you realize the lots were slightly different. Bad feeling for you and the client

    >tip
Never use sanded grout with polished natural stone. Not only will you scratch it while grouting, whoever services it later with a floor polisher will catch sand and scratch the floor too.

    >tip
Mix your cement, then chill for 5-7 mins, give it another mix and add any water etc. to make it perfect. Never go straight from mixing to laying

    >tip
If using wire mesh on plywood subfloor. Always lay a thin layer of poly between the plywood and the stapled mesh, it will. Prevent the cement from drying too quickly. And give you a much more durable floor long term (without this, plywood sucks the water out of the cement and weakens it before it cures).
