Point of order: We did the same thing in the Pacific with dozens of capital warships. Also at Normandy.

Naval bombardment at D-Day was from over 2 miles out, same thing in the Pacific

No, some of the Royal Navy destroyers (when they saw the troops on Utah getting into trouble) cruised up and down the beachfront only a few hundred yards out and fired directly at german pillboxes and artillery. https://www.usni.org/magazines/naval-history-magazine/2004/june/gallant-destroyers-d-day

    >"The battleship's initial bombardment was not very successful, failing to inflict a single casualty among the defenders, as due to the battleship's proximity to its target its heavier shells did not have time to arm and did not explode upon impact." - Wikipedia

It's perhaps the most assholish way you could start a war.
    >Send battleship to other nation's port
    >Say it's a diplomatic visit
    >Sit there for a few days
    >Wait for the signal
    >Open fire and start offloading marines
This was done while Germany's own claims were that Poland had attacked them first.

Paradropping a capital and sending riot police in ahead of the army takes the cake imo.

The germans even told Poland that if Poland mobilises, this will be an act of war and Germany will invade them.
      >Send battleship to other nation's port
      >Say it's a diplomatic visit
      >tell your neighbour not to mobilise, nothing to be afraid off
      >Wait for the signal
      >Open fire and start offloading marines
      >invade with full force, after telling them there's nothing to worry about, so Poland didnt even mobilise their armies
      >they had to quickly scramble everything
      >during motherfricking Blitzkrieg
      Jesus Christ.
I dont think there ever was a bigger dick move done in military history.

Blucher was carrying a bunch of Gestapo agents for the occupation of Oslo. Hopefully they all drowned.

Is it really a fight when the only thing accomplished by the IJN was Yamashiro angrily firing at nothing?

North Cape and Surigao Strait were the last two BB vs BB fights.

Guadalcanal and North Cape were battleship vs battlecruiser fights. At Surigao Strait Fusou and Yamashiro were both sunk by destroyers.

Lol. Read up on the SMS Emden attack on Penang in WWI, particularly about the hapless Russian cruiser Zhemchug.

On 28 October 1914, Commander Cherkassov was at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in George Town with a lady friend. The remaining crew were having a party on board rather than keeping watch. The German light cruiser Emden was disguised as a British warship and pulled alongside Zhemchug at a distance of 300 yards (270 m). At that range, Emden raised the Imperial German naval flag, launched a torpedo, and opened fire with her 10.5 cm guns.[3]
