Its gonna be Chinas F-22. Which sounds good on paper, but what China really needs is a version of F-35. A 5th Generation fighter built at massive scale to reduce costs, massage out issues, arm allies and have deep logistical depth for a proper war.

Unfortunately, Wolf Warrior Diplomacy combined with Chinese small dick syndrome, means that they really have no way to scale production on the plane or draw in tech and parts from allies, which means the US could probably just attrition their entire J-20 force into the ground and use the left overs to kill all the non-steal airframes.

You looking in wrong direction. You look at everything through conflict of US vs China
          >hurr durr we have nuke so even if China stronger we just nuke them
There are many other types of the conflicts that can happen, and direct US vs China is less probable among them because nukes yeah. But China fighting neighbors not US is much more probable.

For a time US total overmatch in the air against othe countries was considered default. There is US and there are everyone else. US has F-22 and they are only country that has full 5th gen. Other countries have no counter and their AF would collapse encountering US.
But suddenly out of nowhere China joins that club. Fully capable (stealth+ supercruise) 5 gen fighter. And now China just like US has total overmatch in air against any other country. It shifts balance immensely, no country besides US can hope to stop Chinese air dominance in the potential conflict.
And nothing US can do besides be fully directly involved. No sending F-16 or even F-35 to proxy ain't gonna help, those are undermatched vs J-20.

            >fully capable (stealth + supercruise) 5th gen fighter
We literally have no way of verifying the stealth capabilities of the J-20 whatsoever. There's zero reason to assume an F-35 is "undermatched" against a J-20. The only hard advantage the J-20 appears to have is being equipped with particularly long range radar-guided missiles. The only way to capitalize on those missiles however is to have a sensor suite good enough to see and track (different things) an F-35 before the F-35 has closed the distance to make that extra range redundant.

The chinese are probably going to use J-20s like low-observable Mig-31s, hucking large missiles at long range against weaker targets that struggle to see them.

Obviously J-20 performance is classified, but there many indicators that it has much better supersonic performance than F-35: speed, acceleration, supersonic range. And yes J-20 has longer range and more potent missiles. F-35 has only one trick in the sleeve (stealth), J-20 has 3.

                >many indicators it has much better supersonic performance than the F-35
supersonic performance is one of the least important parts of what a modern jet fighter does. Supersonic flight is a neglible part of the flight hours a plane is going to be racking up.

                >supersonic performance is one of the least important parts of what a modern jet fighter does.
ATF study disagrees with you, supercruise was one for requirements together with stealth for Advanced Tactical Fighter.
It's true that previous gen fighters didn't use supersonic, because their supersonic was actually fake, so forced via afterburner that you can't actually use it in real world scenarios.
But ATF asked for supersonic performance that brakes that "supersonic useless meta". Making supersonic range long enough to become useful.

yes, for the ATF program in the 1980s, i'm talking about the modern JSF program that produced the F-35

                Anonymous

JSF wasn't supposed to be air dominance fighter. It was supposed to be little brother of the F-22 in the high end - low end mix, when big brother archives air dominance little brother carries bombs. (F-15 and F-16). To make JSD cheaper and with larger load (2*2000lbs vs 2*1000 lbs bombs of F-22) there were needed sacrifices, supersonic performance was sacrificed.

                Anonymous

Yes, an air dominance fighter isn't really necessary. The F-35 is going to be far more useful for a peer conflict than the F-22 is. Instead of "High-end, low-end", we wound up with "higher end, high end".

Look, the F-35A is a monster; It can penetrate IADSs, use ultra-high resolution SAR to perform CAS/BAI from 50 miles away and contrary to popular belief the "A" variant can absolutely shred in BFM even against F-16Cs. But there's a good reason the USAF is replacing outgoing Raptor and Eagle squadrons with Eagle IIs instead of F-35As, and is pursuing PCA to replace the F-22: As good as the Panther is at counter-air/interception missions, it will never be as good as an aircraft designed specifically to chew through waves of enemy combatants to achieve air *dominance* as a purpose-built airframe

Its just going to be a F-35 we have at home. Why would the CCP attempt to build a second Stealth line when their already in production stealth fighter needs to add another 200-400 airframes to be competitive with the US.

Having a Wish version of the F-35 would only take away resources from an already working airframe that can be used and improved.

I’ll respond because the OP had the decency to simply post a thread asking to discuss the J-20 without trying to make it into bait. It’s a failed 5th gen program. It’s evident that they intended to create a 5th gen competitor but due to various shortfalls in industrial capability and some key tech they were forced to accept so many compromises that it fell to a 4.5 gen at BEST. Because they couldn’t make high-quality turbine blades they had to use old, underpowered engines which meant the airframe had to be larger to accept two large units. They can’t make the advanced fuselage shapes with tight tolerances resulting in lessened stealth. They couldn’t develop an advanced flight control system requiring the use of canards downgrading stealth further. Very likely they can’t economically produce advanced RAM coating. They have AESA but I strongly doubt they have the signal processing software anywhere like the level of Western software which had been intensely, continuously developed and upgraded for decades to achieve the results it does. That software is very carefully protected and I doubt China has managed to acquire it. But even if they have and their radars have the same features and performance as Western ones, the fact still remains that J-20 is still too compromised to reach gen 5. So they call it gen 5 for propaganda purposes but in reality it’s only an "indigenous" 4th gen with low-observable features, something that MIGHT be called a gen 4.5 if we grant it also has modern high-end sensors, combat systems etc. It very well be just a 4th gen but I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt.

      Anonymous

I too will effort post, I like real discussion. While early on i believe the J-20 was a complete compromise on design it has certainly evolved. The turbine issues were 'supposedly' fixed with the advent of the J-20B and the ws-15 engine. It looks good on paper and does seem to provide necessary thrust for super cruise but the chinese metallurgy just simply isnt as well developed so they compromised the lifespan of the engine. This is also assuming they aren't lying about production numbers of the ws-15 as well. The shape of the airframe has definitely dramatically changed since 2011 with the newest models even getting rid of the full bubble canopy because of the sensors they stole rendering it not as important. In addition they made some improvements in aerodynamics. The production quality is definitely also improved as you will seldom see exposed instruments or rivets in the newer batches. The coating is definitely a mystery. Even if they somehow managed to replicate what was on the f-117 from yugislavia those coatings would still be far behind what we have now. The design itself generally adheres to planform alignment so its shape is atleast low observable. Many have said canards would be an issue but I doubt it considering the US has produced the x-36 and the naval proposal for the yf-23 had canards. Itll be interesting to see how this fighter will develop in the future. I would also say it has more claim to being 5th gen then some other "5th gens" like the kaan but only in regards to the J20s that have the ws15.
