it's been this way over a decade. I've never really thought about it before, not until recently because it suddenly started to smell. I've done some more research and found out that the thing at the top is something like a 'Durgo Valve'. It's only meant to open from pressure change when you flush, but since it smells now it must be open. Likely a blockage affecting the pressure which keeps it open
> ll the sewer gas leaks into your house and or blows your entire house up.
That’s not really how this works anon. It’s an AAV to allow water to flow away and also aerates the sewer to prevent anaerobic bacteria from producing methane and other rotten egg smelling stuff. It’s up to code to have them inside the house. If it starts to smell like sewage you may have to check and replace the valve as they don’t last forever. Or you just extend it through the roof
>vent pipe
Shit's fine. The vent pipe for all 6 floors under me has been shitting moist bathroom air into my ceiling for 9 years, making condensation on the roof structure and dripping through the hole in the concrete slab for it, onto my fucking drywall, rotting it to shit the entire time. Some morons forgot to connect it to the other half of the pipe that goes to a vent all the way back when this shit was built over a decade ago.
I've been considering pumping water into it and flooding someone's bathroom for shits and giggles.
Yes
fuck
is it a big deal that it doesn't
I'm pretty sure thats a vent pipe. If it doesn't lead outside all the sewer gas leaks into your house and or blows your entire house up.
So free gas to cook with?

this is my theory anyway, I actually have no idea
You got it exactly right.
Could be a blockage, could be the valve itself, but what you're describing is correct.

Imagine the smell
put a giant balloon on top to capture the gas and sell the gas to morons
It's got a studor vent on it. It's a one way gas vent with a filter. It's fine
