My point is simply that Ukraine's position of greatest advantage has passed. The Finn's wisely recognizes that if the conflict turned into a war of attrition they would eventually lose more, so they made peace. While they gave up more territory, they increased their international prestige while diminishing the USSR's by an equal amount. More importantly, they demonstrated to Russia that further aggression towards Finland was not worth it. Ukraine was in a similar position, but emboldened by massive foreign aid (which the Finns did not have access to) they have chosen to drag it out. Now, the average aid of the Ukrainian conscript is 43. They WILL run out of bodies before the Russians do. Even if they win, and I don't see how, the majority of the war has been fought on their territory. It will take billions of dollars and years of work to even begin the restoration process. Zelensky would have been a national hero if he had sent the Russians home with a bloody nose and just enough land for Putin to spin it as anything other than a complete disaster/embarrassment.
Finland gave in because their army was on the verge of falling apart. There's no sign of that from Ukraine, who've continued to kill thousands upon thousands of Russians in the Donbass the past month.

My point is simply that Ukraine's position of greatest advantage has passed. The Finn's wisely recognizes that if the conflict turned into a war of attrition they would eventually lose more, so they made peace. While they gave up more territory, they increased their international prestige while diminishing the USSR's by an equal amount. More importantly, they demonstrated to Russia that further aggression towards Finland was not worth it. Ukraine was in a similar position, but emboldened by massive foreign aid (which the Finns did not have access to) they have chosen to drag it out. Now, the average aid of the Ukrainian conscript is 43. They WILL run out of bodies before the Russians do. Even if they win, and I don't see how, the majority of the war has been fought on their territory. It will take billions of dollars and years of work to even begin the restoration process. Zelensky would have been a national hero if he had sent the Russians home with a bloody nose and just enough land for Putin to spin it as anything other than a complete disaster/embarrassment.
Finland gave in because their army was on the verge of falling apart. There's no sign of that from Ukraine, who've continued to kill thousands upon thousands of Russians in the Donbass the past month.

Countries don't collapse until they do, germany invading russia in 1941 was catastrophic but it didn't collapse until 1945. The USSR invading afghanistan was catastrophic for it but it didn't collapse for another two years after they finally left. Literally all we can say now is the war is hurting russia in a major way and we don't know how that's going to play out in the future.
Ukraine could retake all of their territory including crimea and donbass and they'd still wish the war just never happened once it's over, in that sense it has never been possible for them to "win" as in create a better scenario than if the war didn't happen at all
But that's not a particularly useful observation to make because Ukraine didn't get to choose if the war happened or not. Putin didn't even bother to make an obviously unacceptable demand at the start of this, he just invaded outright.
So yeah, getting invaded sucks even if you wind up "winning" the war. The demographics of the USSR continued to have a big nazi-sized hole for basically its entire existence post-1941, for example. Is that an achievement? Does Russia actually gain anything from Ukraine's deprivation? Of course not, and it's already obvious that the war will never be "worth it" on its own terms from a Russian perspective for what they are losing in it either. And unlike Ukraine it will be entirely their own fault.
