This is the (more or less) situation right now.
Here you can see the rail lines.

Notice how in Volnovakha area, the ONLY rail line down south towards crimea is only a MILE away from the areas controlled by Ukraine.
The battle lines are somewhere between Solodke (Ukrainian) and Berezove (russian). That's the bottle neck for rail transit.

https://www.google.com/maps/@47.7708425,37.5002696,7181m/data=!3m1!1e3

https://liveuamap.com/

The rail line is right in the middle. Currently in possession of russians, but... only a mile from Ukies.
Yeah, the Ukrainians can destroy that rail line any time they want. That will cripple russian military shipments to Crimea, and it will be super hard to repair unre constant ukrainian bombardment.

If you are in Crimea and are thinking about getting the frick out of dodge, these are about the last moments to do so. Soon, you won't be able to.

They really gonna start starving civvies out to claim some muddy shithole in the south? Because apparently they are already resorting to rationing food in Crimea in preparation.

Russia shouldn't have let them move into seized territories if they were just going to be living in the line of fire. Basically 8 years worth of human shields.

Well, the russkies can leave any time they want. That will save them (and the civvies) from starvation.

But I seriously would NOT want to be under russian occupation when their soldiers start starving. The brutality against civvies will be incredible. If they don't surrender, we are talking fricking cannibalism. True ork style.

You really haven't read much about russian military history, have you? Or russian history in general.

That's how it always goes in russian cities under siege or during famines. If the soldiers don't surrender, animals start disappearing. Dogs, cats, birds... Then Old people and young children.

I am not saying this is only a russian thing. That's what happens during sieges, no matter where you are.

Incredible strategy going on in Ukraine

      Anonymous

The Ukrainians have hit on the basic and obvious formula so far - interdiction by bombing logistical checkpoints, followed by an attack on the now starved forces. Made possible by the fact that all the occupied territories are essentially a long thin shape with zero defense in depth that can be rolled up wherever needed through force concentration. Kherson should be the next area to fall under this strategy (again), it's basically perfect for it. Frankly, it's a surprise that communication lines aren't being cut all over the place.

"How is cannibalism a viable option?" It's ALWAYS a preferred option for starvation.

You can survive without eating for good three weeks. If you get some human meat once or twice a week, that can be prolonged to several months.

Here's a handy little list of "I prefer not starving to death"
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_incidents_of_cannibalism

And people usually live where they are born. It's "Their land". People have roots in places that are inhospitable, and refuse to leave.
...or they are under occupation by hostile forces, and CAN NOT leave.

      >You can survive without eating for good three weeks. If you get some human meat once or twice a week, that can be prolonged to several months.

I doubt you'd be able to make 2 adults survive months with only 20kg of human meat.

Also it's a lot easier to flee and find warmer places with wildlife, grass, fruits than just staying there and murder your child ???

If "your land" makes you starved maybe you are moronic to stay there.

        Anonymous

They eat those who are already dead/starved first. It's the logical thing to do when there is nothing to eat, but it is still cannibalism.

Let's not forget that there are tens of thousands of Russian troops that physically prevent you from moving between cities "for security reason".

And once they start starving, they might even start eyeing at any refugees like "you look tasty". So moving away from famine areas might really be beyond people's means.
Even walking out might be unfeasable if you are already starving.

I'd count more on russian navy being able to supply SOMETHING for crimea. But even that would be reserved for soldiers and those shipments make a very tempting target for missile strikes.

There might be some transportation using roads (in trucks) but I doubt it will be enough for big cities.
The civvies will be fricked anyways. They won't get shit from such shipments.

Yeah. The rail line is blocked by burned husk of a fuel train. The burning fuel has almost certainly destroyed the rail line so badly that they will have to completely dismantle the railway and build a new one. That's assuming the structural damage to the bridge is not severe (which it might be considering the fire will weaken the concrete too). Estimates about rail line being back in service are anything from "Maybe by the new year" to "could take next spring". Military shipments over rails? Not a a chance.

Only one road bridge is still standing, but even that has been visibly bent and sagging. Probably will not support any heavier traffic. You can walk across, but let's just say I would not be the first one who drives a semi-trailer over it. Frick that.

For all intends and purposes, traffic across the bridge is stopped. Since russia does 90% of it's military supply runs on railroads, this means they now have only one rail line open from Donetsk to Crimea. And it is within Ukie artillery range.

Apparently light vehicles (up to vans) do seem to be able to move through the road bridge.

As for rail bridge, I really would wait until tomorrow to see if there is any movement on it. A few videos filmed in the dark really could be from anywhere.
There are two rail lines on that bridge, so theoretically one might still be usable or at least the rail line might be repairable from the burned section. But the concrete of the bridge might have lost significant amount of structural integrity, so I would not say anything about driving heavy freight trains on it before some proper engineers have thoroughly inspected it.

To drive a train through the bridge without full structural analysis would be insanity. The "Allah will keep the bridge steady" kind of insanity.

            Anonymous

Alright, now drive a large military truck loaded with tons of equipment on it. Or a typical semi loaded with something basic like bags of road salt or a dumptruck with gravel. So far all we're seeing is smaller private vehicles like 4x4 trucks, SUVs, and sedans. We aren't seeing anything weighing more than 2 digit tons, and that's going to be the determining factor if these bridges can be used for anything resembling commercial or logistical use

They do have railway troops. In theory part of their job is guarding rail lines, construction/repair and moving goods. So in theory they could build more rail lines but I haven’t seen them do anything past the first four weeks of the war when they built a oil pipeline from Belarus down towards their Kiev attack. Since the withdrawal, I haven’t seen them build or do anything of note.
