      Nice digits.
Gaijin happens to sit on a very niche gaming genre that most Western studios just don't have the organic autist representation to duplicate and/or even see the potential lucrative nature of making their own. Not to mention the nature of the game prevents the kind of diversity-baiting that Western game devs (and movie studios) have come to be characterized by.

They’re just either too poor or too ADHD-ridden to play DCS

DCS isn't a "game." Also there's a lot of people who play warthunder on console
      >inb4 'muh cOnSoLe"
More people play videogames on consoles than they do on PCs internationally. Like it or not warthunder makes gaijin piles of cash because it's playable on *all* the devices you could wish to game on.

It's the only consumer sim that actually simulates the intricate switchology of modern fire control systems and actual mechanical failures if you mis-use them. Not to mention the ai has a human brain as opposed to most sims with non-existent ai.

            >I haven't tested gunner HEAT yet.

GHPC only sucks because the devs haven't added any sort of complex ai. They literally just drive at you while shooting or sit there and do nothing. The $30 Steam game barely has enough new content compared to the $3 patreon version when it was released.

The game is designed to frustrate its players. Every feature, battle rating, br compression, op premiums, a matchmaker that is good enough to make a lobby 80% level 10-20 players against the remaining 20% that will be Lv 60-100, but not good enough to make an enjoyable experience, the 16 vs 16, 99% of the vehicles being sub meta and shit, powercreep, all of it is there to frustrate its players. But not frustrate too much and keep some hopium around for the players to stick around. Gaijin is clever with this, very clever and straight up evil, fricking worse than EA. Gaijin has manager to redirect all the frustration and hate away from it self to other players, so you have people gaslighting eachother tgat x,y,z nation is OP for this and that reason. Very clever.

There is no fun or hope in this game and if you disaggree, you have Stockholm syndrome.

If a company chooses to make a game F2P, it means that they are prioritising money over quality. A very corporate thing to do and its common. This doesn't take away the fact that the game is flawed from the moment it was decided to be F2P. And I condemn your act of brushing this of as a normal and ok thing in modern gaming. It wasn't it got normalized by big companies and still is a shady business model.
          >I still enjoy

War Thunder is one of the biggest games out ther and among the biggest money makers. And because it is this way, Gaijin can out advertise any competition into oblivion. Not to mention the ammount of adds on every millitary channel out there. WT has become synonymous with online millitary enthusiast community, that leak classified info on millitary tech in discusions that always started with someone pointing out a problem in the game. WT is not just a game, it is a cultural icon, a succubus that keeps a generation of lonely men at their pcs and is a threat to the security of Nations and the perception of a Nations millitaries.

Before WT it was COD, before COD it was WOW, there are a lot of disenfranchised young men and the cause isn't "videogame bad" but the breakdown of the nuclear family and the normalization of women in the workforce. Once again the profit motive at work, double the worker pool to suppress wages.

I have strong opinions on past economic policy we could revert to put and end to this but /k/ isn't the place for that.

I sometimes miss the game despite that I stopped playing it ten years ago. Back when it was strictly air combat and (mostly) WWII aircraft made it a blast, and the devs were less blood thirsty too.

War Thunder is russian propaganda. Gaijin supports the invasion of ukraine and their planes and ships in game have absurd stats due to russian bias, since most players are slavs, and to the illiterate plebbitor that takes them as unequivocal truth this was proof enough that a t-45 would've been able to tango with an Abrams. Ruskies are devious and use every tactic to demoralize the enemy, and videogames are a huge frontier that touches a big chunk of the modern demographics worldwide.

They also have to pander to their audience and please their oligarch masters. Think of it, how would the Russian public and government think if the game portrayed Russian and western vehicles accurately, this same company has been sponsors of government events before. Also it’s a F2P/P2W game so constantly adjusting stats and frustrating players to the point of spending money is by design.

I enjoy the game when I'm in the mood for it. The problems arise when I want to unlock some event vehicle. They CONSISTENTLY tighten the thumbscrews with every fricking event to make the grind progressively worse. By the end of the event I'm burnt out and have to play something else for a while.

During the Object 292 event a few weeks ago I could only keep myself sane by abusing how ludicrously overpowered all of the American shit is. People b***h and moan about the frogfoot being russian bias, but it doesn't fricking hold a candle to the bullshit that is the A-4E having access to god damn fricking bullpups and walleyes at a BR where the only defenses are gun SPAAGs and the occasional stinger. People don't like admitting that the american bias in this game is way stronger than the russian bias.

I don't buy this. Anyone who plays a few hours of warthunder, be it air or ground (I never fricked around on naval so I can't speak to it) *will* realize the game is on some serious bullshit when it comes to armor modelling, penetration stats, gun performance, and the ever-present conspicuously over-performing Russian vehicles.

Ruskies are devious and use every tactic to demoralize the enemy, and videogames are a huge frontier that touches a big chunk of the modern demographics worldwide.

it was clearly on a bad trend for a long time, yeah, but ground forces took the existing problems and set them in stone by doubling the vehicle and map count and probably quadrupling the player base. final straw for me personally was adding crew skills to planes. player skill goes out the window when grind and golden eagles let you pull 50% more gs for 50% longer.

Pretty much, a typical example of this is how everyone is obsessed with the individual tank's stats like armor, mobility and firepower, but in the same process completely ignore doctrines the vehicles were deployed under, the human experience inside of the tin cans and battlefield realities.

It's pretty obvious that WT doesn't follows the CoC, situational awareness, morale or any military doctrine. Even so it fails miserably in the fundamentals that they (implicitly) follows (engine behavior, armor, flight model, damage model).

It has some really nice ship models but I think the gameplay is fundamentally flawed in a lot of ways and getting worse, t. got out after like 2K hours (probably more but I'm going to be optimistic)
        >basic shooting involves aiming against an auto-aim plane placed at the right range to compensate for the speed and position of the target, but you still have to match left/right movement.
        >ranges compressed without trajectories compressed to account for this
        >no immunity zone as a result
        >crossing the T is a bad thing, you abuse "sloped" armor and put your nose towards the enemy
        >bare minimum damage control mechanics
        >radar
        >aircraft carriers were overly influential to the outcome of the match and unfun to play against
        >remade to be those same things but worse
        >submarines
The lower tiers are some of the most fun in the game too, which is a shame. You can really feel like a battleship and just drive up to people and exchange gunfire rather than having to sit around and avoiding someone getting enough of an angle on you to snipe your citadel.
I think you could make a WoWS-like game that would be good but you'd have to start with something that's actually meant to feel like naval combat rather than starting with a tank game and trying to make it as boatlike as possible, while still keeping manually fired weapons with far too much accuracy

The only real valid complaint was that if you had a light tank who trusted you, had good spotting range, and wouldn't let the target know they'd been spotted by plinking at them, you could dominate the battlefield by killing people who didn't know they were in danger.

I liked the artillery in wot and think it should be implemented in war thunder (albeit differently) but I seem to be the only one. People that get upset about it are just mad they get got and don't see the value in using vehicles as they're intended in a game meant to approximate realism

I would 100% return to this game if they added something like a light version of Red Orchestra tank combat with crew positions and an AI crew. I can't take the moronic ADHD 1 man tank gameplay anymore coupled with maps that force you to brawl like WoT along with all the other arcade shit (shell cam, plane revenge kills, etc) they added. The only things that can scratch that itch are Graviteam tank sims, Steel Beasts, and sometimes ARMA, but multiplayer hardly exists or doesn't exist/support it at all for those games.

I mean it is just a mathematical simulation, showing off how raw numbers work. It doesn't take into the account multitude of factors, temperature, wind, material quality, luck stats, chaos theory.
But it's fun and more or less informative.
Just like in video games. You see Bradley wrecking T-90M with an autocannon IRL, but in War Thunder he will wipe the floor with you every time, if only because exponentially better situational awareness and pin point precision of mouse targeting.

I came back to War Thunder recently and I realized the game is much more fun if I play at my own pace and use planes and tanks I like. But it's still only almost fun and I'd never spend actual money on it. Enlisted though? Gayjew's got me by the balls there. It satisfies my WW2 autism while not being a simulator which is what keeps me from trying a lot of other WW2 shooters.

You know I find it funny that Gaijin and Wargaming both have been more or less war profiteering in the past couple years. I expect pretty much every Russian or Ukrainian company will be doing the same for a while.

They actually merged the campaigns together and now the game progresses with a tech tree similar to War Thunder, except you can use leftover XP for free so you don't have to shell out money for it. There's also Battle Ratings now, which need some serious work for a variety of reasons. BR V Japs absolutely rape BR V US because they added in wacky shit like an automatic Type Hei. And pretty much every premium squad is a trap, they're all various degrees of bad and the XP/Silver boost doesn't help much. Speaking of Silver, the economy is probably as bad if not worse than War Thunder now. Soldiers range from 3000 to 12000 Silver and weapons are 3000 starting at Tier 3. Not to mention how expensive uograding vehicles is now. Even if you had a bajillion orders left from before the merge your 600000000 Silver doesn't go very far. I wouldn't even say there's any good incentive to shell out cash except for the Battle Pass, and even then it's only barely justified.

Oh and this us ultimately a minor thing, but now the matchmaking means you can see guns on maps they have no business being in. Like MP-3008's in Moscow or Tunisia. But at least the Puma is actually really good when it's on a map that isn't Normandy, rollign through the dunes on Tunisia and vaporizing Allied paper tanks is hilarious.

Since this seems to be morphing into a general /k/ vidya thread, has anyone else here played Cold Waters?
It's pretty fun. I'm playing the 1968 campaign as the Skipjack because in my opinion it's the most aesthetically pleasing of the subs. On easy difficulty though because I'm an idiot.

Sure, I played it a bit. It's the most approachable of sub "sims".

Oh definitely. I've seen people talk about Silent Hunter 3 as like the classic of the genre, but besides not really being too big of a fan of the ww2 U-boat aesthetic the much more primitive tech makes it seem like it would be way more of a pain in the ass to play. I don't want to manually plot torpedo solutions because I'm a lazy idiot.
I've heard of dangerous waters but that's supposedly a lot more hardcore (and again, lazy idiot).

Dangerous Waters is super hardcore. You are not piloting your sub like in Cold Waters.
You basically watch the Waterfalls go and push the buttons.

Yeah, I'm good in that case.
I'd honestly like a PC Steel Divers-like singleplayer game, cold war era subs but fairly lightweight. I feel like the settings I've got Cold Waters on right now (difficulty slider to minimum, time and speed compression to max) gives me something like that.

Side questions, in DW are you responsible for every facet of the boat's running or just whatever station you happen to be at?
I feel like a lot of these simulators particularly for crew served vehicles are actually a bit unrealistic in the way that they both have accurate/realistic operation of the various crew stations, but then expect you to essentially man them all at once instead of delegating the duties you aren't focusing on at that moment.
I could see something like it being fun as like a multiplayer thing - isn't UBOAT meant to be a co-op sub sim?

I was just htinking the same thing looking at that screenshot cause the sonar operator is apparently also responsible or at least needs to be informed about the altitude, wind, course, and speed
              >isn't UBOAT meant to be a co-op
I don't think so. You have crew members who do their job and IIRC you can go into FPS mode following one of them. But they do their job automatically, you don't have to read the sonar or anything

Ah, I think I'm getting it confused with Iron Wolf, that's the OTHER modern U-boat simulator but with coop and VR.
Man there's a LOT of U-boat games, not so many nuclear sub games. Shame, I love the aesthetic even if I barely know what I'm doing.

              >Side questions, in DW are you responsible for every facet of the boat's running or just whatever station you happen to be at?
You can do that, but you can delegate crew to do it.
You don't need to steer the boat, you just plot the course. Your sonar guy will mark everything they hear, but it might take a hot second for him to plot out the course and speed of the target.
Pretty sure you can also rely on automatically fire solutions, or you can do it yourself.
But don't quote me on these, I've not played this game in a long time.
              >I was just htinking the same thing looking at that screenshot cause the sonar operator is apparently also responsible or at least needs to be informed about the altitude, wind, course, and speed
This is actually quick screenshot I grabbed, this is MH-60 helicopter, because in Dangerous Waters you can play Oliver Hazard Perry cruiser, too. But like I said above, crew will automate things to some degree.

                Anonymous

Oh, that's good then. In CW it's 'semi automatic' so you can pilot the boat manually or issue course headings on the map, your crew will eventually identify contacts by themselves but you can speed it up by manually identifying the waterfall pattern (good fun) or up periscopes etc. It's simple enough that I don't feel rushed off my feet doing it.
                >This is actually quick screenshot I grabbed, this is MH-60 helicopter, because in Dangerous Waters you can play Oliver Hazard Perry cruiser, too. But like I said above, crew will automate things to some degree.
I looked online and yeah, there's a BUNCH of vehicles in DW, that's cool. As far as I can tell the only drivable boats in CW are NATO ones, though one of the big mods adds a bunch more including soviet models.
Would dig playing as an Akula or Alfa. Especially if doing so meant the crew voices were in Russian or in Russian accented English.

If you don't like Steel Fury I don't think you'll like Panzer Front because they're basically the same game. Even moreso with Panzer Front Ausf B, it's a still a sim at the end of the day and you'll have to command a platoon of tanks, plot waypoints, whatnot. If you wanted a point and click tank game with some semblance of realism the Panzer Elite series (particularly Fields of Glory) is probably the closest you'll get.

There's a guy on youtube called Jive Turkey who plays it a lot, an ex-US Navy sonarman (same guy who does Sub Brief if you know that). He knows a lot about submarines and is very helpful in teaching you how to play the game and also tells some cool stories about his time in the navy. Through him I went from not understanding anything and getting my ass kicked constantly to being somewhat decent at it. Would recommend if you're having trouble with it.

I'll check him out. I've been watching Wolfpack's 1968 campaign to see how he plays it then just doing similar stuff, I don't really have much of a clue - they don't really make "submarine warfare for dummies" books (they should) and the tutorial goes through basic functions but not their method of application.
A lot of what I do is still kind of random, hovering up, going silent, diving, going fast, coming back up again. I've not lost my current campaign sub yet, that's probably just because I'm on the easiest difficulty though.

In fact that's a more general question I guess, to do with military sims and in particular vehicle based sims like ones for naval or tank or air combat: how do you learn them?
At least with civil aviation for example, the default one (msfs) comes with what amounts to a flight school program that teaches you the basic principles, controls, good practice, navigation etc.
Most of the milsims I've played will give you an overview of basic concepts and controls, and then sort of just drop you in it and assume you know the rest.
I know what buttons to press in SABOW to drive the tank, but I don't really know how to use the tank effectively; the game doesn't teach that. I know how to operate the sub in Cold Waters but not the basic doctrines of submarine warfare.
There's an image I used to have saved which was talking about how people play games like DCS and demand ultimate authenticity, while doing everything wrong. I don't bring it up to rag on people if they're having fun, but more to say that basically I feel like Homer in the one episode where he takes command of a submarine.

No sorry, this is the only thing I had about sub warfare in my pdf collection.
I'm a tanker myself, and shit is much easier to find for tanks. You can easily find training courses online teaching you the basics.

            Anonymous

I sometimes worry that the fact that there aren't really any tactics guides for this kind of thing is more of a sign that I'm mentally deficient, like most people don't actually need to be told how to do this stuff, they can just mentally construct it after being given the basic principles and a scenario.

No need to apologise, I appreciate it regardless. That sounds good for tanks (though I will admit I went through something similar trying to search for tank guides recently).
            >that pic
Hell yea, that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. Like, I have to assume that when someone joins the army they won't automatically know how to tank good, so there must be some training; same for submarines.

Not that anon, but given the recoilless follows a ballistic arc there is a chance they are likely to miss you on their first shot. Also the SPG-9 crew should be running the frick away. Given the Sagger is MCLOS the gunner is highly likely to hit you with their shot, if you start to shoot back it will also potentially cause the gunner to miss the shot.

If the gametype wasn't basically deathmatch, it would make "balancing" the game so much better. Asymmetric mission layouts and more interactive objectives could make it so the game is balanced by the map rather than the unit. Just look at the OG Starcraft - The game's matchups are broken as shit in a vaccum, so the map designs adapt to keep things balanced. You still get to drive your Panther, but you'll probably be outnumbered and have to play to your strengths. Imagine if a map had a static objective that caused ticket loss, but there was also a supply truck convoy and an infantry battle happening elsewhere on the map.

The only times War thunder wasn't a grind were the anniversary and special events, where asymmetric missions were available for play like Battle of Britain and there were bots flying around too.

Lord yes. Yesterday's thread on armor penetration became gamers throwing in game stats around with no reference to real world examples.

Huh? It's only helped it. The recent american chimpout because the M1 provably does not have DU in the hull has been the best discourse I've seen on the Abrams in years.

Plane game. Do your part to control the airspace, or remain forever a mad ground target.

Warthunder is fun but you have to stick to certain rules to enjoy it:

    1. Dont be shit at the game
    2. Never play above 7.7, or with aircraft, or boats
    3. Learn to lead vs aircraft
    4. Never help your teammates, just farm kills
    5. Learn some insults in Chinese
    5. Turn user decals/decorations off to avoid all the pedo weeb shit

I do enjoy Air RB top tier tbh.
Specially now with the tacview, i just autistically watch my best games on it and learn how other people play.

On one hand, I feel like I'd enjoy this game. On the other hand, I know it is a slog and microtransaction hell and I don't feel like subjecting myself to that.

My peak happiness in this game was reached when I was averaging 5kd in my MiG21SMT in 2019.

Now I only hop on to play the most meta planes when major updates drop for a few days, then never play again for another 10 months.

    Feels sad man

What if... America, Russia, and China, are all destined to collapse into devastating civil wars together due to their unique social problems that are becoming increasing insurmountable?

    >Russia - kleptocracy ruled by an aging delusional securocrat (also has a substantial portion of its armed forces dead thanks to the Invasion of Ukraine)
    >America - dysfunctional and increasingly unstable democracy coupled with growing racial animosity
    >China - looming demographic crisis and Xi's need for a war to prop up his eroding economy and strongman image
