Are there any pics/videos of it all going down, Omaha specifically? Other than the ones that have been circulating for years now.
    >robert capas photos
    >canadians landing at Juno
    >ariel photograph of the beach littered with bodies
to name a few of the common ones. There's NOTHING anywhere from the first wave at Omaha? I know some footage has been "archived" because it was too fricked up to show the public, but this is PrepHole. there's no way there isn't any whatsoever.

for the time it certainly was, and I meant the gov't archived it away so it'll never be shown to the public.

Some Reddit gaygit found unreleased day footage, and he got it archived and posted the video here. 8min of never before seen footage of the invasion

          >Juno had half the casualties of omaha
          skill issue tbh
i went to omaha and juno recently, juno had zero cover whatsoever, just 150+ meters of flat beach in between the shallows and the defensive line. bunkers had sightlines down the entire beach, probably 1500 meters with no obsctruction whatsoever. you either sprinted past the shore defenses or you died.
meanwhile omaha was 100 meters to the seawall, which provided good cover against pretty much the entire hilltop in all directions. could just sit there and only really be at risk from indirect fire.
          also
          >lol omaha defended by clueless non combat rejects
          >juno defended by ss panzer division and hitler youth

Yeah, I can see why the Brit-only ops at Gallipoli and Dieppe went so well.
            >defended by clueless non combat rejects, but we had to face panzers!
You had the the 716th and 352nd. 21st Panzer was in reserve and responded to both British and American landings.
I don't want to get into a shit-flinging contest as you were our allies and bled with us, but this comparison will not fare well for you if you want to push the issue of Juno vs Omaha.

              Anonymous

It's obviously not an advantage to the attacker, but omaha was not exactly an impregnable fortress. it had a shitload more cover than juno (which itself had absolutely none whatsoever), and the defenders sightlines were relatively equal on both beaches, even taking into account the cliffs (hills) of omaha

i think what you're completely forgetting here is how we (on juno) had shermans right from the first wave. if you took those away, the casulties would've likely been as bad or worse for juno.

end of the day, my point here is that there was nothing in particular about omaha that made it an incredibly hard target, its just all your tanks sunk in the channel.
              >pic related, the last spot the germans held until 4-5 in the afternoon on omaha, notice how the hill only has view on a small section of the beach before it dips into a small valley

Also they fricked up the opening bombardment, so the enemy defences weren't properly suppressed.

I just did the Point du Hoc level right at H-Hour. Last night I played Brothers in Arms for the Airborne rep. I wish the Commonwealth got more representation than two missions in the original Call of Duty.

I remember reading that all the combat footage of D-Day went down with a ship.

Supposedly they sent a cameraman to each beach to collect footage. 4/5 got killed. The last one had to go around to gather up the footage from his dead buddies. He handed it off to some public affairs Lt who dropped the bag with all the film while he was getting back on the ship.

      T. Former 25V Combat Documentation and Production Specialist aka combat cameraman and they used to tell that story to us on the first day of VPD.

ok morons thats not correct, there was more to d-day than just omaha ffs
the rough estimate for OMAHA by itself was 800 dead, 1600 or so injured. for some reason they didn't collect proper casualty reports at the time, so its a rough number. when you put this number into proper perspective, you see that they only took 7% casulties out of the 34k men they landed during the course of the day.
Yes, the first couple waves got slammed, but that was because of horrendous coordination, lack of armour, and bad weather, not the actual german defensive lines. omaha beach was a nightmare simply because of bad luck

After Barbarossa, we should have let Hitler and Stalin have at it, and then invaded whoever won, but we didn't want to run the risk of them being able to fortify their position once they gad only one front to worry about and make retaking Europe even harder.

Only saving half of it from the consequences of socialist infighting is better than saving none of it, and Stalin would have gladly sacrificed 95% of the USSR's prolescum population to bleed Germany to death and thought of it as a win-win.
