Things needed to survive and trade in a societal collapse scenario

I'm trying to find more uncommon or overlooked items that would do great in a post money situation. Any tips on the best food items to buy or can, items to trade and simple but necessary skills to learn or have books on. I'm currently stocking up now. Also, is solar power worth it or should I just live in the dark?

I live in small town kansas

Best tip I've received so far is sewing tools. Without cheap walmart clothes we will need to repair our own clothes.

I've heard that alot. But I just imagine people will run out of cigs way sooner than lighters. It seems legit but I'm assuming society isnt on full collapse, well at least where ill live. and since I wont be living in the woods it wont be that necessary.

easy fire is always necessary, even when they run out of fuel, in a pinch you can use it as a flint

Yeah but they're so common. I dont think theyd go for very much until like a few years down the road. I still got some but I dont think its worth buying a shit ton to sell.

If you're looking at trading in a post-collapse economy, you should not be thinking about things you can hoard now. Instead, look at what can be produced:
    1. food
    2. water
    3. medicine
    4. electricity

Learn how to create one or more of those things, and get the frick away from major cities. Then you'll be fine.

I live in small town kansas. tons of corn and wheat production here. I imagine food wont be an issue for a few years just on how much is in our silos. I'm not a israelite but I'd rather be a trader than some manual laborer or militia man. I'm looking into distilling and I asked about solar panels in the OP. are they worth it? I could only afford like a $200 one though.

        Anonymous

Corn is DOGSHIT for self-sufficiency. The amount of water needed per edible calorie is disgustingly high with corn. Wheat is much better, but the refinement process is pretty extreme. Potatoes are decent. Mushrooms are infinitely better.

As for solar power, getting "off-grid" is not about finding an alternate way to create a livable amount of electricity, but about lowering your electricity needs. Solar power is something that only rich people can do because of the huge initial investment and solar cell replacements that are required.

I used to work for a crop consulting company as a field scout. Im certain they would have us inform farmers and ration out which fields get planted because a limited amount of chemicals and fuel to run the irrigation. We dont get enough natural rain so itd have to be irrigated from our wells. Yeah theyd probably not plant corn but if there is a bunch just lying around to plant they might. We do have several potato fields so thatd be nice.

About solar panels. I'm looking for something that could supply my computer, microwave, phone and electric skillet so I dont have to burn fuels all the time. Also, the computer will be rare but other items id like to use maybe every day.

Yeah but it depends mainly on what you plan to use it for.
    >lighting your house and running your window unit?
    No. Huge drain.
    >using it to charge batteries, small appliances?, and possibly a fan?
    Yes.

Thanks, I can only afford the $200 dollar ones on amazon. got any better ones I can get? and it would mostly be for charging shit and a microwave or electric stove top so I dont have to use my fuel.

Spices. 100% spices. Especially something that doesn't naturally grow in your area. Food always has survival and monetary value. Well spiced food even more so.

Also honey. If you can put together a small apiary or two you're golden. It's not only a good condiment that's full of energy, but it can also be distilled into mead.

Enjoy. One of the pluses about stocking up on various spices, they have an extremely long shelf life if dried and sealed. Bonus points if you get some seeds and try growing some fresh ones yourself (if your climate supports it).

Shit will easily start to go to Barter System.
Just everyday otc stuff like ibuprofen and aspirin will be godsend. Bandages, neosporin, anti-bacterial soap, cough drops.
        Big fears are infections.

well, dont know how to destile, but I do know how to make some killing mead using sugar instead of actual honey (bc honey take months to break into alcohol while sugar takes days). Does that count?

I'm working on gardening and pickling myself. Best part about it is I go to a foodbank where they leave stuff out, and I got a bunch of free cucumbers and mason jars there (ontop of the cukes I grew myself), just need to get the mason lids, probably will need to buy them. Next year I hope to expand the garden and grow a lot of different stuff.

Another idea I have later on is to find old furniture, tools, electronics, etc. that people are throwing out by their curb, or even at a junk yard, and fixing them up to sell, or barter for things other people have that you need.

This is the angle that most "preppers" don't want to look at. Learning and gaining experience in real world skills. They want to do things the easy way and simply have things on hand, which can be stolen, taken by force, destroyed in fire or other natural disasters, etc. What you know how to do can help you survive even with nothing at all. People need people who can heal, fix engines, repair houses and build shelters, ability and skill will get you the protection and even privilege you need to survive. Gunsmithing and the ability to make homemade firearms is also a vital skill. In the USA indian wars, the Indians rarely killed gunsmiths, because their services were so valuable.
