why do people glaze this aircraft the YF-23 so much? was this design really better than the YF-22 which was obviously chosen and then became the F-22 raptor,if it was superior why did it not even got off the prototype stage?

It would have been maybe faster and probably stealthier. I say maybe and probably because the YF-23 was pretty shitty and couldn't complete the competition because its airframe started to crack. The average person doesn't understand that that would mean that they pretty much needed to design a YF-24 instead in order to complete the design requirements in a functional airplane. The final F-23's actual performance specs were therefor anyone's guess. The only thing for sure is that it would have cost more than the F-22 owing to redesigns.

tl;dr the F-23, had it existed, would have been based on functionally a different prototype. One of the test pilots said the plan was for the airframe to not even have the engine nascels anymore, just a fat body.

That doesn't make sense since the F-22 had to be redesigned from the YF-22 as well.

Incorrect, final designs are iterations based on prototypes. "They're different" is not the point. The point is a final F-23 would not have been designed from the YF-23.

I know nothing about aircraft (or armor for that matter) and I'm somewhat ashamed to ask you to spoonfeed but why does it look asymmetrical? Any suggested reading? I've become interested in jets lately.

Because the camera is at an angle. The design is symmetrical.

      >Probably sneakier
Turns out that aerobatics don't actually matter that frickin much in a BVR fight

I do not care for the YF-23. It looks wonky and unbalanced, and everything it did marginally better than the YF-22 was offset by the things it did worse, critically its supercruise speed. It's also a hard sell for your -air superiority fighter- to have less maneuverability than its direct competitor.

      >and everything it did marginally better than the YF-22 was offset by the things it did worse, critically its supercruise speed
Rumors are YF-23 was much much faster than YF-23 especially with dual cycle engine.

It's sad. In retrospect it was a better platform, muh dogfighting didn't matter. But then again neither the F-22 nor a theoretical F-23 would have mattered anyway without Bush II losing and the GWOT never happening. We'd still only have tiny numbers of them today, the electronics would still be outdated, they'd probably still be getting replaced by F-35s.

the YF-23 was a piece of shit and I'm glad it lost the competition, being slightly stealthier at a 5° angle headon was not worth all the other huge downsides of the design

If I engineered such a plane, I would have a special module that could be taken out and replaced with a fleshlight. I would frick every plane.

If the YF-23 won, the same exact threads with the same exact people would be lamenting that the YF-22 was not chosen. Frick you, OP.

Nah. They would be reversed with everyone shitting on the 23 now being the ones who make the threads for the 22.

The only reason the F22 was chosen was because Dick Cheney was sec of defense at the time and his wife was on the board of directors at Lockmart
