Yes, no problem with using your engineers limited manpower to strip down and the ifvs, haul it across on trucks then double the invested time by having to refit it.
Not like russian tanks have issues where they have been abandoned due to lack of available maintenance or anything.

Real life isn't a button you click on your game to add extra armour or add extra cost to your unit and it gives you better stats because you 'researched it'. It takes time to do all that. If you spend the time doing that, you're not denazifying Ukraine.

BMPs are amphibious, friend. They hold both sides of the river, they don't need a pontoon to get them across when they can freely prep the beaches for crossing.

I can't find a source for the surface current at the mouth of the Dniper, but it's a 1km wide crossing in a BMP with a maximum speed of ~7km/h in water on a good day. Even if all of Russia's BMP-1 and BMP-2s were factory new, and even if they hadn't been uparmored to the point of negative buoyancy which they have, they'd STILL just float harmlessly out to sea and sink. It would be comical.

Ideally you wait until the pontoon bridge is built and has vehicles on it, or is just about to finish being built, to cause the maximum loss of committed effort and equipment.
You don't really wanna blow your wad on the first section of pontoon

Why even destroy the bridge in the first place then? They could have all gathered there until the end of time on it.

              are you daft?
Damaging the bridge sufficiently means you can move men across it, and light vehicles, but almost definitely not APCs, IFVs and tanks. In other words an entire Russian force could retreat from Kherson and have to leave their heavy equipment behind. And the bridge could later be repaired.

Letting them build a pontoon bridge but not cross it means they get bombed before they can reach your lawn, brainless.

This doesn't make sense either because vatniks are still marching across the bridge.
Why allow this for some genius plan to hope they all just bunch together more than they already are? There's no reason for this.

My grandad was a engineer during WW2 and he told me once they had to build a new pontoon bridge almost each day for a month. Build during the night and the germans will blow it up during the day.
And the way you build during the night with no light is by sticking your fingers in the bolt holes to see if it lines up. Should a shell hit the water everything moves and your finger gets ripped off.

          German bridges are something else.
picrel is the "Doitsu-bashi" (literally "German Bridge"). Built during WW1 by German PoWs that got taken in by Japan when the Japanese aided the British in conquering a German colony in Asia. That bridge is over 100 years old now and it's still as good as new. Even though the German defenders were only a few thousand civilian militiamen headed by a couple hundred professionals against thousands of Brits and Japs, the Japs were pretty impressed by the Germs and asked the Brits if they could house the PoWs.

Those PoWs, what with pretty much all of them being nothing more than civilians, were pretty allowed to walk around freely outside their prison camps, visit nearby japanese villages, freely interacted with the locals and only ever had to go back to their cells to sleep. They proceeded to pretty much conduct the first real western cultural exchange in centuries by holding concerts, making german cheese and teaching the Japs all the details of advanced western baking. And that's one of the reasons why the Japs like the Germs so much to this day. It's not because of that stint in WW2, it's mostly because those PoWs imported the finer points of German culture for several years while being defacto funded by the government, which fed them and paid the volunteer workers a salary. Several of those men remained in Japan even after the war saw the release of the prisoners.

German colonial autism never ceases to amaze me. Tsingtao, the city those POWs were captured in, was so efficiently built and managed that even fricking Mao decided it was best to leave it be. There's still a brewery that was set up in imperial times that was the only industry in Communist China that wasn't seized after the civil war. In my opinion it's also the only beer in Asia that doesn't taste like pond water...

Americans were hugely impressed by the Germans during the occupation, too. Enough that the military got scared that fraternization would compromise the occupation.

The French, meanwhile, were widely perceived as lazy, dirty, and cowardly.

China's a special case. They absolutely loved the Germans there. Not only were several of their units trained by Germans, but even their generals followed the advice of german advisors who basically worked out their entire defence strategy, which became instrumental in holding off the Japanese.

Meanwhile, during the Nanjing Massacre (also known as 'The Rape of Nanking') a German ambassador also saved over 500.000 chinese civilians after the Chinese government and the president fled the city, leaving the fate of Nanjing to an International Committee led by John Rabe. Rabe proceeded to run outside his office and bodily put himself in the way of the guns and tanks of various japanese units while frantically waving around his Nazi credentials to try and stop them from slaughtering civilians. Usually, that only delayed the inevitable massacre, but he apparently still managed to allow hundreds of thousands to escape unharmed.

This. If he were back in Germany, he'd also be horrified of the gestapo and SS purges of civilians, the killings of all deemed unfit, holocaust, etc.
A properly educated nazi would just call it nature taking its correct course as Hitler's ideology was all about brutal civilisational darwinism. The stronger civilisation beats and enslaves the weaker one. Th subdued people are no different than cattle or horses. To be used as needed and discarded once not.

Should be the job of Pantsir and Tor, but yes go ahead intercepting rockets with your most important AA asset. Gonna be hilarious when in a couple months Crimea gets airborne assaulted with a bunch of Airbusses simply because Russia ran out of AA missiles.

        Anonymous

To be fair, if S-400 worked against GMLRS rockets why wouldn't they use it? Maybe there's an expense mismatch, but those M31's are about the most dangerous threat the Russians have to deal with right now. Each one is just about guaranteed to obliterate exactly what it's fired at, so each interception would be an unqualified win.

        Anonymous

Traditional fallacy of missile vs interceptor value once again rears its ugly head.
Fun fact - the cost difference between attacking rocket and your intercetor does not matter much.
What matters is difference of cost between your intercetor and target thats going to be destroyed if the attacking missile is not intercepted.

      >S400 this, S400 that
S400 is for shooting down airliners and old fighters that dont have proper EW modules to warn them of S400 radars, its a huge system that takes a while to shoot a salvo for, considering the fact that Oh-Hi-Mars rockers pop up for around a few minutes at most youre better of using shitstirs and tors to try and shoot them down near the target, because at that point there is a chance of missiles actually intercepting the rockets iron dome style

Heres how its possible in THEORY to intercept rockets with AD systems:
      >Have an elevated search radar linked up with the AD system sitting IN the target zone
      >Search radar detects something going your way
      >Have a secondary search radar IN the target area scan the incoming threats with doppler filters optimized for shit that is INCOMING your way to get filter out as much ground clutter as possible
      >Shoot everything you got, best case when the missiles have onboard radar that can filter for blueshifted Doppler returns so you dont have to do individual engagement radar locks. alternatively use AESA to lock multiple threats at the same time
Surprisingly none of the slavshit AD systems apart from maybe shitstirs and some hypermodernized bucks have radar datalinking

I swear, missile kinematics, space and time are unfathomable concepts to vatniks how did they come up with proper AD systems is a mystery, the lead designers for S series systems were probably ukrainian.

And this also assumes the Russian's radar operator can ID that they're MLRS fast enough since normally the Ukrainians fire some other rockets to act as decoys, so by the time they figure it out, it's too late.

If Ukraine hits the bridges and the russians don't do anything about it, then kherson gets isolated and it becomes only a matter of time before the russians have to surrender it.
So they build pontoons and hope that they'll manage to keep supplying kherson. Maybe they hope to stall the ukes until western support dries out, maybe they're waiting for reinforcements, maybe Ivan was told to pontoooon and he pontooooned because that's all he can do.

They also hit the bridge at Darivka crossing the Inhulets river. Its part of the highway from nova khakovka to Kherson. So even if they cant sufficiently damage the dam bridge supplies can still be cut off from kherson itself

Eveything that happened until now is preparation for the pontooner's masterwork. That's how they will reach Odessa. Not with the bargain D-day /k/ yearned for, but with the longest pontoon in history, between Sevastopol and Odessa itself.

I look forward to the day when Putin triumphantly parades through Moscow with piles of stolen grain and banana and declares that he defeated Satan in single combat and has taken the nazi gold for his people.

I remember arguing with shills on here and on /misc/ mere days ago who refused to believe that the bridge was compromised. All they did was endlessly rattle on about muh HIMARs tiny holes. Even when I tried to explain to those homosexuals about the snapped cabling compromising the entire bridges overall structural integrity, they STILL chose to believe the psyop images of concrete being dumped in the holes.

You may now lick my boots and grovel at my feet, you pathetic frickers.

Theoretically, what would the environmental impact be of building a dirt dam in the Dnieper to drive across?

Widespread flooding and then the damage collapses

its a fricking river, millions of gallons of water would just wash over the dirt damn because its a fricking river

The water would harmlessly seep into the ground and that would be that.
Vatniks would still die however, because that is their lot in life now.

They can’t repair a bridge and now they are going to build a kilometre long dam? Ignoring how moronic making it out of dirt would be, not going to happen

So one truck can cross at a time?

I feel like people are sleeping on this, it’s not just that heavy equipment can’t cross, it’s that NOTHING can cross quickly. You’re looking at sending one truckload of soldiers across at a time

Wouldn't collapsing a bridge mean that you don't expect to use it anymore/in the foreseeable future, and in an attempt to stop enemy advance?
Similar to the Rail Plough in WW2?
Are they doing it to weaken response to a coming counteroffensive on their side of the bridge?

      Anonymous

They are cutting the Russians in Kherson and generally Northwest from the river from being supplied. It will make Ukrainian own advance slower later on (they can still cross through Zaporizhzhia iirc or pontoon themselves if they feel in control), but right now it dooms all those Russian forces to rout or surrender. It pays off.

Russia also destroyed bridges when they advanced on Sievierodonetsk, to cut the Ukrainians and force them to abandon it.
