Crossing the river wont help. The only other path is to follow the road north around straight into ukie range, or to go across west offroad which is slow and could be impassable depending. Either way its on foot or stay, vehicles are a death sentence

You're thinking of oskil. Only one road from izyum goes through lyman. The other goes from oskil below the dam then up the east side of the reservoir and we'll north of lyman. May not be far enough north for long, but it probably is for the next day or so.

It's the last road out of Izyum. If it falls, Izyum is isolated.

Lyman is a railway junction, and the only railway that goes to izium go via Lyman, and as i'm sure everybody knows by now the russians depend heavily on trains for their logistics. Sure they can resupply by the road that goes through Oskil, but the roads will already be filled with either fleeing or reinforcing forces by now, and is probably being monitored by drones so artillery can pick off everything that rolls there.

Shits kinda materially fricked at this point. If they don't just immediately cut all the losses then do a 180 and try to reconcile with the west for reconstruction while cracking down on their war hawks they're just going to continue fighting a better supplied and more determined enemy with an economic crisis on its way and the combination of Russians leaving and dying is just going to make the future population problem worse. We might be actually seeing the real time death of a super power.

Eeehh. With EU already having plans on how to cut consumption, unless some one in a century cold spell happens they will be fine-ish. It won't be cheap for sure, but pretending that, for example Berlin, which has average temperature of -2C in winter will freeze to death is Vatnik delusions. (yes I know that as we go to the east climate becomes harsher, but east of Germany is former Warsaw pact, and those guys sure as frick are willing to bear some pain if Russia is getting fricked)

Which, uh, means the vatniks in Izyum are now sitting in town with the only ways out not controlled by the Ukies being a few dirt roads... right as rasputisa is starting again.

Not good. It hurts Europe. But Europe will just buy gas from elsewhere and pile on debt. Europeans will take a hit short term. Meanwhile Russia loses its primary source of government revenue. Selling oil and gas to the Chinks and Pajeets at massive discounts won't be viable for long, once the gas price starts dropping again its not long before its not even profitable to sell in Asia at a discount.

        Anonymous

Not to mention that the infrastructure for the storage and processing of non-Russian gas is progressing well.
A while ago Germany reported having filled up all their reserves already ahead of schedule. And last week the first massive ship that's part of a floating lng-terminal in the Netherlands has docked, with the other I think either already underway or already arrived too.

Lyman's in an ass position to defend and doesn't really have any strategic significance (to the territory Ukraine *currently* controls) beyond being necessary to block a pipe dream encirclement of Sloviansk by Russia.

Not sure if "shaping maneuver", Ukraine's trying to draw the heat off somewhere else (my guess), Russian lines just got got their pussies rekt (my second guess), or if Ukraine's feeling REALLY confident about retaking land.

        >It cuts the only route left out of Izyum
You seem to be implying troops in Izyum on a retreat wouldn't try a breakthrough to the north Ukies be damned. Izyum's being supplied out of Belgorod, not the east. If their supply lines get cut and they don't resecure them, they would have to keep retreating until they make contact with a supply line sturdy enough to supply the main Izyum force on short notice. That's a mad dash to Russian rails out east.

Better to punch through to the north. Shorter drive, you'll want the supply lines back anyway, and those were the lines already supplying those troops.

The down side to the punch through though is they'll probably be dumbasses and turn the escape from Izyum into a slow rolling artillery battle because that's all they know how to do even though you can't do that shit with no supply lines. Wonder how long it will take them to realize that's a shitty plan?

            >lol, the road just leads straight into the ukies
Yes, behind which are Russian rails and supplies and at least some possible reinforcements. And it's not like Ukraine doomstacked this. Just punch through, with force, suppress everything in the west, and gun it. You'll take heavier losses than you might need to by forcing shit, but you don't dick around with cut supplies unless you know what you're doing and...well, it's Russia.

              Anonymous

You think just zerg rushing on a narrow road straight into the enemy is the best move? Have you seen the columns of death yet?

                Anonymous

                >You think just zerg rushing on a narrow road straight into the enemy is the best move? Have you seen the columns of death yet?
Their other options are sit in a contracting encirclement while their avenues for retreat get blown to shit or zerg rush a longer narrow road straight into a smaller enemy unit, but the road's longer and also it's away from their supplies and reinforcements.

Or they take their chances on rural roads, but we all know how that ends. At least the northern route might potentially come with relief supplies and forces. It's the least bad option and they should preferably take it while they've still got bridges so they don't have to do it on the fricking Ukrainian side. If they lose their bridges, frankly they're be better off surrendering.

                Anonymous

It's a straight suicide mission that will never succeed because by the time they scramble the logistics together to get everyone out, the ukies have already starting going south down the river and secured the bridges.

                Anonymous

I mean they actually control a few bridges around Izyum proper so if they could just not shit the bed and contract toward the bridges with a proper rearguard and then wrap around up the east bank blanketing everything to the west in explosives til they hit Russian clay, they'd only be dealing with a few detached Ukrainian expeditionary forces that made it past before Russians blew the bridges further north.

They would still be charging into prepared enemy fire, but it's not like this is some giant enemy force Ukraine's readied for them. The Russian lines collapsed. If you're gonna fricking go, go now. Not in 3 weeks when you're down to 1 fricking bridge and there's 4 times as many Ukrainians further north with their weapons already in cover.

The shitton of troops in Izyum, even forced to convoy, are going to be able to suppress the Ukrainian response to a degree. It would suck dick to have to, but every alternative is worse.

one alternative is to turn Izyum into a Mariupol and force the UA to divert troops to besiege the town. but without a fortification like Azovstal I doubt it would matter as much

fricked if I know which is the right choice though, caveat

                >that's called a "rout"
It's called a retreat, although knowing the Russians there wouldn't be much of a difference.

                >one alternative is to turn Izyum into a Mariupol
Mariupol had a frickoff huge bunker system designed to withstand nukes literally the size of half the city and was being resupplied by helicopter and had stockpiles in place for a siege in the first place AND had secret entrances and exits for supply runs until the city became more compromised.

                The Russians don't have pallets.

They can't go until their officers tell them they can go, and their officers won't tell them to do that since it will look bad for them, so they need someone higher up to allow it, and those higher up don't want to look bad so they won't do it, so basically unless Putin himself agrees to the retreat it won't happen, and the Russians will either sit there doing nothing or flee.

Between Izyum and Kherson, isn't Russia about to have like 60% of its forces cut off from major retreat/resupply and effectively encircled cause they doomstacked in front of bridges like frickwits?

Maybe we don’t know how many forces are in Izium really.

The frickers are running. they are finally fricking running. There are no living VDV in the valley. The dreaded Russian Guard and SOBR tremble when they see Ukrainians. The LDNR slave armies have melted like snow in spring. Wagner mercs forgot about money. Russian MoD is silent. Izium is encircled.

      >We cannot get out. We cannot get out. They have taken the bridge and pontoons. Ivan and Vadim and Stepan fell there bravely while the rest retreated to the Chamber of Izyum. We are still ho{ldin}g...but hope …Pyotr's party went five days ago but today only four returned. The kotel is up to the river at Borov. The Chandelier in the Sky took Pyotr--we cannot get out. The end comes soon. We hear memes, memes in the deep. They are coming.

How the frick are the oinkers moving that fast? Were Russian lines really that thin?

        >How the frick are the oinkers moving that fast? Were Russian lines really that thin?
Combination of Russia favoring doomstacks over thick lines, slight drawdowns for Kherson and the eastern campaign, and I imagine leveling everything that might have been useful as cover with indiscriminate artillery barrages wasn't particularly useful when they wanted to set up defenses.

        >Were Russian lines really that thin?
My impression is they stripped the Donbas and Kharkiv fronts to send reserves to Zaporizhia and Kherson

Bruh, they had paramilitary police forces from Moscow holding the line.

they probably relocated somewhere (Kherson? or to those military drills in the east for 50k soldiers)
Russian command structure is not very flexible so loosing general in command there(probably with most of his staff) did not help either...
plus they were told they are winning and Ukies will surrender in two weeks - so setting up defensive positions was low prio....

There is a unit coming in from the north. A motorized rifle brigade IIRC to the Kupyansk area but it's looking like a bad case of too little, too late.

They might probe the perimeter but Ukie armor is also heading there.

            >just bump up 100 000 more professional troops
anon, I know you're trolling and shilling, but I'll answer you in good faith nonetheless. Puting signed an order to increase army numbers by 100 000 people. It doesn't mean the soldiers instantly appeared out of nowhere. Russia doesn't have enough troops, even with LDNR slave soldiers, to defend thousands of kilometers of the front. Today's Ukrainian successes are a proof of this.

I hate to break it to you but real life isn't hoi4 where you just change conscription law and all of a sudden you have 1.2 million recruitable men all going to the conscription office as fast as you can raise divisions.
