Thermal DM unit

Instead of having a DM in fireteams since everybody has optics anyway (I know DM is also priorities of fire), would it be a good idea to have one guy at the squad or 3 at platoon level idk, with a thermal scope and 7.62 rifle that can be controlled and positioned by the squad leader as a fire support element to fire at enemy mgs, SL, dug in positions, enemies behind cover, bunkers, urban terrain enemies firing from wall holes or windows, my gunners on veichles and RTO?

So they can take out enemies that are hard to take out for regular rifleman, or at least negate them/reduce their utility by providing accurate suppressive fire, disrupt enemy units by killing important assets, making enemies more scared of using wall holes/dug in positions bc of thermals.

Also great recon asset that can provide info to SL/PL with his scope (drones can also have thermals but they have an elevated POV so some things may not be visible idk)

Also one may ask why not give a thermal to all infantry? I'd say no bc it's more logistically requiring, without batteries its useless, more fragile, heavy, not good at short distance, more expensive, you need to also see non thermal magnified images

Am I correct? What's your opinion?

Unfortunately thermal kinda sucks during the day cause everything is warm...also sucks around a lot of concrete cause it soaks up a ton of heat during the day and glows bright as hell at night...

But thermal shows heat differntials between surfaces so it doesnt matter if everything is hot, as long as humans are a different temp than other stuff, ofc at night they're the hottest thing so they're bright, during the day they might be in between, but if you make a good "filter" that has colors that are well distinguishable you could still look for the in between color that marks human temperature

Unfortunately that anon is right - even good thermals, with good filtering algorithms, struggle somewhat during hot sunlit days. I have a NOX 18, which is a high tier thermal unit. At night, anything with a pulse will pop right out. During the day, if the sun is strong, everything kind of evens out.

Why don't you try turning up the sensitivity of the color gradient?

You can boost contrast, but it makes the image super grainy, and doesnt help all that much. The temperature differential between a sunlit rock or tree and an animal isn't all that large on warm sunny days.

Yeah...I’m sure the super high dollar government thermals work better during the day than civilian ones, true, the tech is getting better and cheaper.

Damn, didnt realize that anon had the same unit. How you like it so far? Very happy with mine.

I like the nox18 a lot, rifle mounted you see the barrel on 1x, disappears when you zoom tho...I like having a 3x on my gun and using the 18 as a spotter...

What is a good price for the nox? Always wanted to try a thermal for hogs

I’m sure you could pick one up on snipers hide or afcom for 5-6k lightly used, they have a 5 year warranty. If you’re stalking up super close get the 18, if you’re gonna be 50-100 yards away id go for the nox35

I got a picatinny riser for mine to raise it above my can and laser unit. Not ideal for prone shooting, but great for everything else.

Personally I'd go with the 18 for hog sized game out to 150 yards. The additional FOV is such a nice advantage. Plus, Im willing to bet that we'll see some aftermarket germanium lens magnifiers from some third party companies in the near future. Theoretically it shouldn't be that difficult to do.

Pulsar is well regarded, as is the Bering optics hogster

The standard American infantry platoon already has a minimum of 4-6 PAS13 thermal scopes which are distributed among the lieutenant, squad leaders, and platoon machineguns. Most units have enough fused thermal/NV monoculars for all the team and squad leaders too.

Well you get what I mean tho, not a fireteam dm with mag scope but a squad/platoon one with thermals and 7.62x51
