A lot of people forget films like Death Wish were filmed on site with locals as background cast.
That absolute rubble strewn sshithole infested with savages was quite real, iot was not a fanatsy. the murder rate was something like 3x what it is today and 5x what it is in big cities now and that shit was on the news daily. less than ten years about death Widh NYC was clearing squatters with tanks like it was Gaza.
films like Dirty Harry and Death Wish were not fantastical

            >The original Dirty Harry was an excellent critique of the very concept of rights.
No, it's a literally fascist ideal that rights are only for the in-group and violating rights is right if it's a minority/opponent etc. I.E. an out-group
There's very little difference between Dirty Harry and Sturmabteilung etc, conceptually speaking.
It's about "taking back society by force" basically, which obviously justifies shooting all the people you don't like.

Same basic rhetoric we used to get out of /misc/ all the time.

            >fascist ideal that rights are only for the in-group and violating rights is right if it's a minority/opponent
first of all watch the fricking movies, idiot, its about extra-judicial justice for the people by the people when the system is corrupt.
Second, you know when fascist ideas get popular? When people feel desperate, unsafe, or trapped by a society that has failed them.
If you can't see that, guess, what, you're on the wrong side and you are part of the problem

            [...]
Low-brow reddit takes unable to wrestle with simple critiques. Fascism gets bandied about so much, it was only hollywood critics at the time who were asspained by the film. You lefties don't need to go to bat for them.

            yeppers peppers.
Another interesting thing about these films is that it was when cops were routinely being outgunned by crims (just like in the 30s) and the idea of a cop packing enough heat to scare off predators instead of nightsticks and Barney Fife revolvers was quite luscious

I'd throw in "the warriors" as well, if you watched it without knowing when and where it was filmed you'd think it had a huge budget to make such a dystopian crumbling city that was on the verge of anarchy. In reality it had a shoestring budget and all they did was film in NYC c.1978. it's hard to overstate how fricking gone the major urban centers were during that time, and then there are all the small local gangs springing up everywhere once all the organized crime big shots we're getting locked up left and right thanks to RICO. It was not a good time to be a cop in NYC, LA, Chicago etc.. it was an even worse time to be some poor schmuck who could only afford to live on the wrong side of the tracks.
