There are recent reports that North Korea may send 100,000 soldiers to fight in Ukraine. I doubt it will happen. But if it does, how will it affect the war? Will they be equipped with Russian gear, or will they bring their own weapons, vehicles and gear? Seeing North Korean material in combat would be cool.

Oh I dunno. They were killing UN troops, eliminating half the SK armed forces and capturing pretty much the entire South Korea before outside countries stepped in with fresh resources. This is likely how Russia would have eradicated Ukraine if outside countries hadn't eventually stepped in with fresh resources.

I figure it isn’t realistic. But the thought of drone footage of waves of screaming Nork troops charging fanatically across the fields of Ukraine like a re-enactment of Korean War Chinese forces behind masses of Nork modified t-62s and type-59s would be amazing to see.

I want to say you are right but if you cannot afford to feed your troops you are probably not able to expend ammunition for training.

We had a few defections you know. Hell one of the border guards (Who are the best fed, connected etc) ran across the border and was found to be infested with worms. I don't have high hopes for the NK military which is mostly just a labor force

They "might" be better than the donbabwean conscripts the ruskies have been sending but we all know that almost 90% of those 100,000 troops have only fired their weapon once and probably have had no proper combat training beyond following marching orders in parade.

Technically it could be the classic suicide combo of a conventional charge packed inside a padding of nuclear material, essentially a dirty bomb. It's quite simple technology if you happen to have enrichened plutonium hanging around. You don't get the fancy mushroom but it is quite the way to tell the enemy to get out of the place you just decorated with your own limbs and innards. If those weren't just parade props it would have been an enlightening experience to carry such devices on your chest for a while.

They would have to bring their own equipment - including fuel, by the way - because Russia is unable to properly supply even its fifth column in Ukraine. And if b***hing on Telegram by regular Russian Army is right, they can't reliably do so for their own countrymen, either. Unless you're Wagner or a Kadyrovite, you better be saying your prayers.

Norkie gear is 60s vintage or earlier, and it's questionable how much of it is in functional shape. Your average Nork soldier is less a fighter and more of a state-owned slave. Most of what they do is farm labor. 100,000 North Koreans would probably desert at first opportunity and would shatter on impact with actual resistance on the battlefield.

NK soldiers aren't starving. They are a priority group of the population and the regime's existence relies on their loyalty, so they are fed. It is the population in the rural areas who goes hungry when times are bad.

        Anonymous

Must be why their tallest soldiers are half the height of Sorkie border guards. Excellent nutrition making a denser Korean.

          Anonymous

I kinda doubt that SK border guards represent the physical average of their country. But sure, a better diet will change the population over time. Happened in Japan, and in China. A worse diet will also make changes, which makes the western world's obesity issues easy to see.

Some, but probably not many. For one thing they don't speak any western languages. For another there's not that many single Korean women to mingle with and even fewer who have a thing for the penniless. For a third, NK specialices in population countrol and would carefully pick such soldiers whose families at home could face serious peril as a result of traiterous defection. Remember how DDR used to keep its soldiers in check?

What people don't seem to understand about the NK army is that it's basically a meaningless designation. Every nork male has to serve, and a lot of females too. They aren't actually trained as soldiers though since NK doesn't have the money and equipment or even the real need for that kind of standing army. In reality they're just used as state slave labor, usually just as farmers and miners. If NK actually sent 100k trained military personnel, that would be pretty much the entirety of their professional military, and would present a massive problem domestically if anything were to happen to them. If they're sending anything, it's going to be 100k ditch diggers and crate haulers.

Everyone is a "soldier" in North Korea, but it doesn't mean they're expected to ever see the front line. The dying Russian Empire has realized that it doesn't have enough workforce, and is buying 100000 slaves to do menial jobs.

  31. 2 years ago

Most of the colossal North Korean army is worthless starving peasant conscripts. However, North Korea also has the world's largest Special Forces. Those are the "real" North Korean army and while they're not exactly up to par with the SAS they are at least trained, supplied, and motivated on a level you would expect of a second-world nation. But NK isn't sending shit, they have no reason to involve themselves in this bloody and pointless war and lack force projection.
