Probably too obscure. It too years to get the brownells AR10 off the ground, and that's the ancestor of all ARs. A failed prototype has a pretty limited appeal, especially one that's eclipsed by everything else in its trial.

90s 2-gun meta, faster sight acquisition in the era before red dots were everywhere. Similar reason the AK sight is still forward even on new ak100 models, when dust cover-mounted rear sights have long proven to be fine. The thing to remember about the LR300 is it was basically Zittas homebrew competition gun that he decided to mass produce, so everything about it is downstream of that. Eg: He was fond of 1911s and had big hands, therefore the LR300 has a 1911 grip angle and the big sharp palm step.

it takes 10k rounds of ammunition to go from full health to broken, which means that it's actually the only 5.56 gun in the game that is as tough as an AK. You might have gotten that impression because it's much rarer than the AKs, so you aren't finding replacements quite as often.

            Anonymous

uniques tend to have more health across the board. iirc, the most reliable gun in the game is the silenced ak74u. Stalker on the whole is pretty pro-west in its equipment, even from its mid-2000s Russian-aligned setting. 5.56 is a direct upgrade to 5.45 and a lot of the best gear is western. eg, the exos are western, the helmets the elite soldiers wear are western, all the decent pistols are western.

              Anonymous

the TRs-301 in SoC wasn't unique, it wasn't even very rare, pretty much all the mercs had them. Personally I had the forsight to stash literally every one of them that I found during that first fight with the mercs and then just kept grabbing a new one from my stash every time I was dropping through the area, it was my mainstay weapon through pretty much the rest of the game.

                Anonymous

i didn't say it was, I meant that 5.56s that are unique all have much more health than AKs.

          Anonymous

I used like 2 of them to get through the whole game. Just rebeat it with minimal mods. Man, it's still freaking great. Best 30 hours of gaming I've had in recent memory.

Crazy to think how much the market has changed in the last 20 years. Part of it is inflation and the end of the AWB, but also the things people want out of an AR. Everyone nowadays wants piston ARs like the 416 or ARs with folding stocks like the MCX, the LR-300 was all of that in 2001 and nobody cared. Two grand is still expensive for an AR, but people are much more amenable to paying that much nowadays. I think the KAC PDW was similarly done dirty by the travails of time, a compact .300 blk folding stock AR and nobody cared because the time just wasn't right.

      > Everyone nowadays wants piston ARs like the 416 or ARs with folding stocks like the MCX,
      >the LR-300 was all of that in 2001 and nobody cared.
The LR-300 is not a piston gun actually. It is DI. The tube is actually not a piston, it's the gas tube. It works the exact same way as any standard AR, but the gas tube is is pinned to the bolt carrier gas key, rather than the gas block, so it can have a return spring around it as it reciprocates with the bolt carrier.

        Anonymous

I'm not sure I see the distinction. If the gasses are putting force on the gas tube which moves the bolt carrier back and disengages the bolt, doesn't that just make it a long stroke piston?

          Anonymous

Not unless you consider every AR-15 ever made a long stroke piston. It isn't pushing the gas tube, the gas tube is hollow you dingus.

          Anonymous

It's a tube around a smaller tube, like a normal AR-15. Difference is, now you can put a spring around it, one of the major selling points of the LR-300.

That hollow gas key extension has to be the main fault with the design. Probably bends too easily. Though it's also possible the gun is obscure because it was too ahead of its time.

I heard the recoil spring loses its properties from high volumes of firing. Highly doubt the gas tube on the bolt carrier could bend easily.

          >That hollow gas key extension has to be the main fault with the design
....Have you never seen an AR-15 before anon? It would be less susceptible to damage than the gas tube standard AR-15s have.

            Anonymous

I've got a shitty mp15 and I know how the damn gun works. This rifle gives the gas key some viagra and then wraps it up in a recoil spring condom. So now you have a super long and hollow tube, that reciprocates. As opposed to the standard design, where a static gas tube runs down to the upper receiver and gets head from the gas key.

Like there's any real difference between any ar-15 clone under $1,500. It's a competent rifle and if it's good enough for some fat kid in 2020, it's good enough for me. I just wanted a pre built, and didn't want to get into building something up.

        >Canadians are still refusing to use quad rails?
fun fact, the c7a2 program was supposed to use the kac m5 ras and tangodown vertical grip, as well as upgrade the horribly outdated elcan to actually be competitive with the ta01 acogs of the time (2004ish)
however, the kac rails were "too expensive" to buy from the states, and there were copyright issues with producing them in canada. same for the tangodown vertical. so we just slapped on that piece of shit gas block tri rail and made up some shitty folding vertical grips that aren't even issued half the time instead (the elcan upgrade was also a complete joke, nothing substantial changed besides modifications to the mount so it would hold zero for more than 5 hours in a row)

        >pic related, canadian in afghan with a kac quad rail mounted on his c7 (probably a testbed rifle he pulled from armoury) and a personal? acog ta01 with piggyback red dot on top.

          Anonymous

The Cadex grips suck, but honestly, the tri-rail for a light and plain handguard is peak comfy. If the Elcan’s mount was better it’d all just be PEAK. I really like the optic itself. Just don’t be a dipshit and slap it on a C9.
