300 Win mag fires the same bullet as .30-06, just a little faster, but you lose that velocity within the first 100 yards or so of bullet travel. Unless you shoot elk at long ranges, there's no real advantage to justify the expense, recoil, and noise of the magnum.

You misunderstood me. 30-06 at the muzzle is about as fast as 300 Win Mag is at 100-150 yards. That's assuming the bullet is identical. Are you hunting a large animal at such a long range that .30-06 is not effective? Then the 300 magnum is for you. If not, it's a good way to turn money into noise.

              >300 winmag can shoot 165 to 220 grains with sub-moa accuracy with ease
.30-06 can shoot all of those too, just without as much muzzle velocity.

.300 WM has around 20-30% more energy than .308 longfudd on all ranges. Is that enough to constitute a difference? I'd say so, especially when it matters. For elk, moose and bear, I'll take those extra ft lbs every day of the week. Blasting a white tail from a blind at 50 yards? Irrelevant.
By the way, that's with factory ammo, which is notorious for being mildly loaded in .300 WM. It gives you around 26gr more case capacity which allows you to bubba it to pissing hot loads.

              >300 winmag can shoot 165 to 220 grains with sub-moa accuracy with ease
.30-06 can shoot all of those too, just without as much muzzle velocity.

              >just without as much muzzle velocity.
That's a huge downside. .308 longfudd suffers from substantially more wind drift and I hope I don't have to start explaining the many benefits of a flat shooting cartridge over one that has rainbow trajectory. By the way, I have never seen, met or heard of a fudd loading their .308 longfudd with anything heaver than 180gr. It'll "blow dem deer apart", you see.

It does nothing for me that anything from .223 to .308 won't while costing more and recoiling more.
              >inb4 energy or drop
I don't give a fuck, I can twist a turret and I'm not shooting at a range the trajectory is a factor yet.

to be fair, I don't think old PrepHole talked about much else either.

      I will 308, 30 06 , 300wm because they are
300 winmag flies flatter then a 30 06 or a 308 of the equivelant bulletweight making long range shots easier,

that effect is more pronounced in heavier bulletweights

that is the reason some sniper rifles (namely the unicorn that is the walter wa2000 but a fiew other notable ones like: DSR, AWM, BLASER 93 ) were chambered in it. 300 winmag is FAR from the most proliffic or only sniper cartrige used though

300 wm Has more energy but a 308 is sufficient for most tasks at most ranges so unless hunting something very very big , mostly irrelevant

308 fits in a short action

300 win and 30 06 require a long action making guns longer or necesetating taking your face of the stock to cycle the bolt.
One might ask why not use a more powerfull round when you already have to use a long action.
      >The answer is: im not minmaxing

      >harsh recoil? sure it kicks more then 30 06 but if you hold the gun properly and you wont get a bo bo, if you still do get a rubber butt(plug)pad.

The flat trajectory justifies such recoil , 300 winmag guns are slightly more portable then other magnums(require less barrel material making them lighter)

There is a strange inrange tv 308 SVD and a WA200 in 300 winmag comparison, a timed test shooting 100, 200 and 300 yards( i think) if you are interested,

30 06 stands inbetween the 308 an 300 winmag . leaning more thorwards the 308 side of performance. So much so that thwere is very little difference up to 300 yards between the two in point of impact, after that point 30 06 holds a slight edge. So you might be able to extrapolate 30 06 vs 300 wm difference

300 is an option ,some people find it usefull, interesting, capable but pick what you will, all 30 ish and 30+ caliber full size cartriges will do just fine unless you have a very specific task in mind

it's about the distance of the kill, not the power within 100 yards. Yes, you can kill anything there with a .308, but can you kill anything there out to 1k yards? With a 300WM and a good scope, the answer is yes, even a little girl can with training.

If you want to survive the collapse, you either need a rapid-fire that you can sustain in CQC mob zerg rushes or a way to keep the mob off with stand-off power. Ideally, both.

I was looking at the 300 PRC, tbh. But the rounds are stupidly expensive right now. I couldn't justify not buying a 50 cal if the ammo is about the same.

if you put her on anything other than an 18 pound bench gun she'll never carry in the woods, its guaranteed to give her a flinch she has to train out of.

Idk, with a muzzle break and solid butt-pad, fired off a tripod. I don't think my kid has much longer to go before I let her try it. I have a light 308 with a shit butt-pad, and she hits steel with that.

Not a fan of braking .300 WM. It just doesn't need it and is far too concussive for hunting. A suppressor is a far, far superior option.

              Anonymous

Cucked countries like mine (canada) are not allowed suppressors. Either way brakes aren't needed for hunting...hell, neither are clips. You should only need one good shot and then the real work begins.

I'd rather just shoot vitals than have to rely on blowing the shoulder out so you can have a chance at tracking it.

300wm vaporizes vitals, yeah you lose a shoulder but there's not any tracking involved if your shot is good
