You forgot to add food requirements. Horses, for example, need 20 pounds of feed per day and 8 gallons of water.

if you run out of food they can keep going for months though then you can eat them, they can also eat grass or whatever in the short term

if horses are given time to adapt, then yes grass is fine food for them. The issue is if you run out of feed, they can't exactly just switch to grass immediately and perform the same.

The PLA cavalry battalions maintain their own breeding program for horsies, using either the offspring of previous cavalry horses or newly broken in animals, preferring the former on the logic that they inherit their parents temperaments as warhorses. They use the local Mongolian horse breeds and are pretty much some of the last true warhorses left in the world.

The PAP/Militias just source whatever local mount is raised in their area. Sometimes these are not horses as OP shows.

Yeah it's part of breeding them, they use the horse equivalent of a Tenga and then inseminate their females with the semen since mounting can be rejected and dangerous for the horses.

Also, we don't have good records, but Shang were in the right time and place to have significant interaction with Scythians. We already know how much they influenced Chinese elite burial rituals, it's very likely that Chinese fended off more than a few Saka/Scythian raids in their time

and you're being very specific by only mentioning Chinks. Do I have to mention Turkic peoples and their 1500 year reign of terror?

Ming-era Chinks fricked up the Portugese, Spanish and Dutch on seperate occasions when those three tried to frick with 'em in the 16th-17th century. (When the Machun conquered the Ming, surviving Ming loyalists evacuating the mainland straight up conquered the colony the Dutch had on Taiwan at the time.)

The Spanish at one point seriously thought they could straight-up conquer China wholesale, tried to invade and then their whole invasion force got fricked up by a more proactive than normal provincial army. The court in Beijing never even realised it was more than a bigger than usual pirate raid.

A mule is more surefooted in the mountains. It can pack more than a donkey. Unlike a horse, it won't put its own life in danger just because you told it to. A horse will practically walk off a cliff if you tell it to. So if you're in the mountains on treacherous trails, the mule won't lead you into an unnavigable position.

What exactly makes mules so much better than either horses or donkeys?

IIRC? Smaller than horses, stronger than donkeys. Better beasts of burden than horses in extreme mountain environments. The Germans use them in their mountain infantry units.

Austria still has Cavarly, mainly for transport in the Mountains, like these Haflinger coldbloods.
A war horse that can dig its own food out of the snow 0,5m deep and withstand down to -30 C degrees.
Haflingers were bred to be versatile enough for many under-saddle disciplines, but still solid enough for draft and driving work.
