It's a swing scope. He's got a second scope you can't see he is firing down that's a red dot.
He can't fire down the scope its got a cover.
Some of the navy guys will have scops you pivot 10 to go down optics one way but you swing the scope 180 use the red dot. the reason you spin it is the optics opening fur your eye side is huge while the incoming optics opening is small. The red dot being on that side gives you an easier angle to see down and balances the gun.

Look at this thread of white trash super soldiers who have never used a pivot sight set up.
It's easier than tilting your gun to use angle iron sights or red dot. You just spin it and it locks in.

Fricking people just want to hate not learn

I don’t get it. There does appear something on the other side of the optic but I don’t understand how spinning the scope would result in any better orientation and in fact wouldn’t the thicker end of the scope just get in the way?

          Anonymous

Cope the scopes around the wrong way so even if true it makes this no better. Photoshopping the incorrect calibre of shell casing in was an utter frick up as well.

Figure it is not a big deal if a Naval commander is not a rifle expert cause it ain't his job and it's just a social media post. Never met a redneck with 11 aircraft carriers, nuclear missiles and submarines, satellites, and Pentagon trillions.

I assume there has to be an armorer or something, someone who set up the rifle like that and gave it to the commander or whatever. And these are the kinds of people (at least some of them) working on aircraft carriers, missiles and shit.

          Likely
I've seen rifles with backwards optics given to celebrities when they're doing photo ops visiting troops to make them look stupid since they don't know any better, and I've also seen soldiers mount their own optic backwards when they're on an ex being told to pose by the media ops people.
I assume they do it in the latter case in the hope that the photos of them get pulled from whatever marketing bullshit the military is up to

Nah, it's because a lot of us are shitposters too. Once you know what you're looking for you will >never< unsee the number of official photos with guys setting up background objects to look like their wieners, stacking the wrong caliber of shell casings up on the floor, miming sex acts in the background, holding entire fricking rifles backwards or upside-down, hiding upside-down shit in the background, et cetera.

The Bill of INALIENABLE Rights obliges and obligates bearing arms and being/becoming well regulated [proficient] in their use as a matter of Total Defense. It's not a hobby and him not being 'a gun guy' isn't an excuse, but ignorance, laziness and physical cowardice.

The thing I find weird isn’t that the officer is shooting through a non-functional scope since it was probably just a quick photo stunt and not a serious training exercise for him so he didn’t think anything of not seeing anything and shrugged internally. What I want to know is WHO put the scope on backwards? Obviously a Navy officer isn’t installing optics on rifle. I assume that was the job of someone whose job it was to manage the ship’s armory — perhaps the black man bracing him off-frame? He would have been trained on how to to install optics….but, well, you know…. The officer maybe even noticed the scope was backwards but decided on the spot not to notice to save the man the embarrassment.

That is correct for a modern combat shooting posture where the focus is on reducing silhouette. You ain’t shooting shit if a 7.62 zips through your forearm and bicep. The wing out is supposedly marginally better for stability which is why you see Olympic shooters doing that type of thing but hasn’t been military standard since like WWII when most of the fighting was done from foxholes.

  24. 2 months ago
    Anonymous

Is this a swing (pivot?) mount with a red-dot mounted on the other side of the scope or not? Another anon said the Navy uses them and does look like something is mounted on the other side of the scope but is it real? Ie, you turn the scope 180 degrees to lock in a centered red dot which is better than an off-center / tilted red dot. That would explain why the cap is still on even if the armorer put it on “backwards”. Hilarious that /k/ couldn’t pick that up if true.

  25. 2 months ago
    Anonymous

This popped up in PrepHole yesterday. I didn’t even notice the scope at first because his form is so fricking bad.
    >Wing out
    >Butt stock resting damn near on top of his shoulder
    >Gay ass gangster grip all the way back on the rail
Like I get it the navy only gets like a day of weapons training in their basic but the fact that the media team didn’t even catch this and edit it out is so fricking ridiculous.

  26. 2 months ago
    Anonymous

A lot of commentators seem to think it’s a Gunners Mate (chief in charge of the guns) deliberately pranking the CO. But I think it’s likely that the CO noticed right away that the scope wasn’t functional but didn’t want to ruin the chief’s day over a 5-second photo op so just pretended not to notice. It’s not like a DDG commander is going to care about rifle drills or have anything to do with installing scopes.
