>The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense said on Monday that elements of Russia's First Guards Tank Army -- an elite unit intended to defend Moscow from any NATO attack -- had been part of the chaotic Kharkiv withdrawal. They ran.
What is an equivalent US unit to the First Guards Tank Army? I'm trying to get a gauge on how utterly humiliating this is.

It’d be like losing the 1st Cav, First Armored, and 1st infantry all together x

There really isn't one.. when it comes to Armor and mechanized divisions, the US would rather have them all equal. I'm sure due to various factors there are some better than others.. but none are explicitly meant to be "elite"

It would be like hearing that Iraq just ran the 1st Armored Division or the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment out of Kuwait.

Pretty sure if that happened the commander would just tell everyone in the division to kill themselves.

      >Both South and North Korea were almost entirely occupied by United Nations forces. However, once U.S. units neared the Yalu River and the frontier between North Korea and China, the Chinese intervened and drastically changed the character of the war. Eighth Army was decisively defeated at the Battle of the Chongchon River and forced to retreat all the way back to South Korea. The defeat of the U.S. Eighth Army resulted in the longest retreat of any U.S. military unit in history. General Walker was killed in a jeep accident on 23 December 1950, and replaced by Lieutenant General Matthew Ridgway. The overstretched Eighth Army suffered heavily with the Chinese offensive, who were able to benefit from shorter lines of communication and with rather casually deployed enemy forces. The Chinese broke through the U.S. defenses despite U.S. air supremacy and the Eighth Army and U.N. forces retreated hastily to avoid encirclement. The Chinese offensive continued pressing U.S. forces, which lost Seoul, the South Korean capital. Eighth Army's morale and esprit de corps hit rock bottom, to where it was widely regarded as a broken, defeated rabble.

The Kharkov offensive ressembles the Second Phase offensive of the Chinese in Korea, just that the Chinese were facing a multinational coalition instead of just facing the US and didn't receive extensive training nor equipment from abroad (since the Soviets were still reluctant to help them thinking that It'd be a fools errand to face the US & UN whilst not having air superiority), yet they managed to pull It off same as Ukraine this time

The Ukrainian suffered heavy casualties and didn't manage to fully close the pincer on the fleeing Russian troops who managed to escape at expense of giving up terrain and equipment along the way. The US 8th Army in Korea literally had to give up the entirety of North Korea in order to retreat back towards the 38th parallel and general Walker died in a car accident during the retreat, whilst the Russians gave up one oblast

            >Heavy casualties

The Russians fled on contact abandoning their equipment. This simultaneously ensues that Ukies had little casualties and Russians too, simply because there was not that much fighting but a general panic. Otherwise the web would be drowning in pictures of dead soldiers from both sides.

so Russians didn't fight back but their enemies somehow suffer heavy casualties? From what?

              The ghost of dead hohols
Russians perfected anti ghost traps and let them free when they fled.
The ghosts are bound to the general area they died.

Then you remember the US was figting on the other side of the World in a conflict that was started in a desperate situation already when they arrived, on the worse side of the peninsula (cut off from land by the enemy) while China literally borders the country, same as Russia does now.
I don't understand why you keep bringing this up, there's close to zero correlation here besides a side advanced and the other retreated

We don't have one. It's always been the military of a democracy. So every unit that does the same thing should be equal. I mean, ya SOCOM gets gucci gear but it's all specialized. For a head on drag out room to room city to city fight socom doesn't have better gear for that than normal infantry. I mean the marines have hk416's with 1-8lpvo and peq15's. A gucci 11inch socom rifle isn't better in general combat.

    >equivalent US unit to the First Guards Tank Army
US VII Corps in 1989, comprising 1st Armored, 1st and 3rd Infantry Divisions, and 2nd ACR. It was the premier US unit in Germany.

1GTA is likewise comprised of 4th and 47th Guards Tank Division, 2nd Guards Motor Rifle, and 27th Guards Motor Rifle Brigade. This is the heaviest Army in the entire Russian orbat, equipped with the most tanks and the best tanks, the most prestigious postings and as noted, the 2nd Motor Rifle guards the Kremlin. They were the first unit to receive Armata and were parading them around, though of course it wasn't used in Ukraine.

TL;DR yes it's pretty fricking humiliating

    >What is an equivalent US unit to the First Guards Tank Army?

XVIII Airborne Corps, the United States Army's most elite infantry formations and premiere expeditionary force. Whenever America goes to war, XVIII Airborne are almost alway among the first conventional troops to go in.
