THE TRUTH BEHIND 6.8x51

Since it's obvious the US isn't going to be facing any near peer human threat anytime soon, what was the true purpose behind developing this cartrige?
Skinwalker population control?
Penetrating Ayy carapace?
Use against the transdimensional demon hives that are infesting D.U.M.B.s around the globe?
The upcoming war against the Pigmutant people responsible for releasing the Pigger Plague upon the US Southwest?

WHAT ARE THEY HIDING?

If it doesn't penetrate armor any better than normal 5.56 or 7.62, why does it matter?

5.56 or 7.62 is going to be just as good at killing under-equipped white people as 6.8x51.

It's still a single round in your infantry units for your average rifleman, a DMR, and the squad L/GPMG. That does simplify logistics quite a bit even if it's just cutting things down from 2 primary rounds to 1. You'll probably still need .50 or whatever eventually takes the role of .50 for the HMG, but it's still one less headache.

          Anonymous

SOCOM seems to like the .338 MG as it's light at only 24lbs, but packs as much punch as a .50 cal against soft targets while being a lot more manageable recoil, weight, and you can lug around more ammo because it is smaller.

Also effective to roughly the same range ~1500-1800 meters effective and over 5000 maximum range.

            Anonymous

SOCOM doesn't have the M250 yet. Once they get that b***h, it will be all they use. A .338MG is better used on a tripod.

              Anonymous

They're not using the .338 as an LMG, it's a crewed weapon with a tripod.

Just like the M2 isn't an LMG, it's a crewed (or vehicle mounted) HMG.

I'm suggesting the .338 MG replace the crewed M240/M2 machine gun role. As it's more effective than 7.62, just as effective as .50 cal against people, and all around better.

                >not using the LWMMG as an LMG
they're not, but at the same time it's definitely not intended to be used only on vehicles or on a tripod

                >.338 MG replace the crewed M240/M2 machine gun role
I think the M240 will stay only as a mounted weapon, but it eventually will be rechambered for 6.8mm. The M2 will also stay as a mounted weapon because there's no substitute for a 50cal when you need to shoot an armored car. The M250 will definitely be the gun to replace the m240 in the field.

While saying as effective against soft targets might be so, a big part of what makes the 50 so nice is its also quite good against a lot of lightly armored vehicles and will defeat almost all armor worn by people without exotic ammo.

                Anonymous

That might've been true for the last 60 years, but it's less true today.

Targets are often armored up specifically to beat the M2 these days because it has been the US defacto for so long. So armor that can beat .50 cal is kinda necessary for any armored vehicle to be worthwhile.

I'd rather .338 replace the M2 and M240 against soft targets and then a larger caliber like 14-18mm for frickin up lightly armored targets and lightly reinforced structures.

The .50BMG has done well for its age, but it's kinda too big for anti-infantry MG duties and too light for anti-armor MG duties.

                Anonymous

Raufouss can defeat much of what m2 can't with vehicle light armor, not to mention SLAP which will defeat almost anything in that category.
And yes, while it's true that more is rated for common m2 steelcore vehicle wise these days, it's equally true for the 338, which has significantly less anti material potential even with specialty rounds.

I agree with you it would be cool to see them move to a larger HM and use 338 to replace 240.. I just don't think it would be good to do away with the 50 for the 338.

That's better than having to deal with those 2 forms of ammo multiplied by 2, for 5.56mm and 7.62mm. However, we aren't even ditching either of those rounds so 6.8mm is increasing the logistical chain in reality.

Almost every time the "simplify logistics" thing gets tried it ends up creating more complexity as it becomes clear that "best of both worlds" are always trade-offs with associated problem to deal with.

          https://www.tactical-life.com/gear/ammo/277-sig-fury-hybrid-case-design/
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.277_Fury

The thing that a lot of people miss though is that the 3000 FPS number is from a 16" barrel, and the NGSW rifle is only a 13" barrel (+suppressor). GT chronographed the 135 gr hybrid rounds at approximately ~2830 FPS.

Sig reps have made some offhanded informal comments that the military rounds are supposed to be hotter but exactly how much, or whether that's even true, remains to be seen.

You're missing the big picture. There's images coming out of ukraine of body armor that stopped multiple 5.45mm rounds. Granted the armor was western supplied to the Ukrainian side, but the fact that it works so effectively means that not having a counter to it is just asking for trouble.

Shotgun slugs are bad at penetrating armor specifically because they're moving too slow.
The way to counter that inherent weakness is by material and by design. Very few attempts have been successful and the ones that have been required extensive (and costly) prototyping.
I haven't seen any copper slugs defeat even pistol rated armor (NIJ 3A), but there was a prototype slug made of solid brass that did very good recently.

Carter began the downward spiral of America, Reagan continued it with good intentions but really fricked up with opening the immigration floodgates. The death nail was letting China into the WTO in the 90's and sending all the west's mid-level manufacturing over there as well as a small contested island whose government isn't even represented in the UN.

That's like saying Osama Bin Laden's son never took part in the WTC attacks, despite being a part of Al Qaeda. The difference is irrelevant. She was and still is a terrorist.

      >you don’t know, they aren’t showing us any data on the hot rounds
We have plates that can stop .30 162 gr hardened steel core rounds traveling at 3300-3600+ feet per second.

We know that the existent .277 Fury hybrid 135 gr rounds achieve ~2830 FPS from a 13" barrel. We can make a reasonable guess that the military rounds may be slightly hotter, but are unlikely to be vastly more powerful.

Even if we were to be very generous and assume the military spec loading is something like a 135 gr bullet @3000 FPS, it would still be over 300 FPS short of the mark required to penetrate some level IV plates, assuming this 135 gr steel core bullet actually achieves equal armor penetration to a 162 gr steel core bullet at equal velocities. And if we were to assume this 135 gr bullet were actually 200 FPS better than M2 AP, it would STILL fall over 100 FPS short. No we don't have "hard evidence" of this but you can make a likely prediction from existing information and common sense. Otherwise if any random guess pulled out of your ass is just as good then we might as well say it explodes like a 20mm HE shell and call that equally probable.

And there are like 2 documented human fatalities from blunt force trauma caused by rounds hitting body armor, both cases where the bullet in question vastly exceeded the armor's threat profile.

There's a commercially available plate that's rated to stop M993 at 3100 fps and Swiss P AP as well. To get around that sort of thing, the military will need to go back to the OICW's 20mm airburst munition. 6.8mm at any reasonable velocity isn't going to cut it.

          Anonymous

Are you talking about the Adept Armor Colossus? Yep, if that plate does what it says it does it looks like it’ll be a winner. The company’s even stated they think it’ll protect against the super special 6.8 tungsten rounds that the average grunt will probably never receive.

            Anonymous

Yeah. And, like you were saying, all plates, except maybe for certain Hescos, seem to have margins of safety built in. So something stronger than .30-06 AP M2 won't necessarily penetrate even the average Level IV plate.
Time to aim for the groin, re-evaluate airburst munitions, etc.

this is why Norinco got import banned and it will never not be funny to me, because the Chinese never actually say no where money is involved. if you email someone in China right now, who has access to them, I guarantee that they'll send you rifles, if you'll pay. they don't give a frick.

That's the lie about NGSW, the original bids were in regards to extending effective combat range. The idea of shoehorning it to this mystical armor penetrating role came later on in the programs development. The program was always about shooting accurately at long ranges in A-Stan, because that is the context that the brass had been familiar with by that point. Ignoring that conflict tapering down, they still went ahead with it and then made the AP reasoning after.
