I have a friend that works as a journalist. He's not even israeli, just went to a good school, now he makes okay money doing something he loves.

It's good that he gets to practice Journalism the way he likes. Too many are driven into monopolies like Sinclair and have to publish sheet after sheet of Yellow Journalism. That's one reason my mother quit despite liking her work. Some shithead inherited the company and decided to start changing everything from a stable paper that covered useful information to some gibberish zoomer crap.

The most interesting thing is that the guy complained in a recent interview that he wanted to change his AK to AR. His plan basically was to buy a civil AR-15(for personal purposes), upgrade it, and use it on the frontline. But he couldn't do that because due to moronic Ukrainian law you can buy a rifle only when you are 25 years old and the guy is 21 years old. Then Zaluzhny just gave him a premium weapon as a reward.

An AR from a decent manufacturer will set you back anywhere between 2 and 4 paychecks in eastern Europe, if you're an average wagie.
But yeah they could have given him an ACOG and ATPIAL with it like they give their SF guys (maybe they will).

AR is lighter, has less recoil, is more accurate and handles mud better.
I love the AK but the AR is better in every way except maybe how long you can go between cleans.

AR has more manageable recoil, lighter ammo, and tends to be more accurate. They're also more ergonomic and have FAR more available parts and customization. ARs can also come in a FAR wider variety of calibers including 5.45x39 and 7.63x39. There's even a .50bmg upper out there. It's basically a gun shaped lego set.

            >AR has less recoil

The 74 recoils only slightly worse than an M4 and that's just because of the heavier recoiling mass.
5.45 ammo is actually lighter than 5.56 on account of the smaller, steel case, and lighter projectile.
(It's usually negated by the mags being rather heavy, though, they have steel inserts.)

              Anonymous

AKs are not "in-line" when it comes to recoil. That's the issue, not the ammo or the mass. In the AR the gun's recoil force goes straight back. AK the piston and position of the stock gives it more muzzle raise. The bolt carrier and piston being above the stock's typical mounting point rather than sending that straight back to the shoulder basically forces it to pivot more with recoil. You can counter that quite a bit with a good enough muzzle brake though. I have a ridiculous one on my AK and it's much closer to my AR in that regard now, still wants to flip up a bit.

                Anonymous

The bigger problem with AKs is not the off-line recoil but the fact that the gun is designed so the bolt carrier slams at the rear of the receiver at full speed, creating a sharp kick that is harder to compensate, less comfortable and throws your aim off. Even if you use a weak round like the 5.45x39 and put on a muzzle brake so the total recoil is a lot less than that of an AR it'd still be more distracting because of this.

                Anonymous

That is very specifically why I need to get my bolt carrier repaired. Bastard mushroomed from all the impacts over the years.

          >much better ergonomics (safety, BHO, mag release, bolt release)
          >ready for optics out of the box
          >enclosed system = you can crawl through shit and it will still go bang, the AK has a bunch of holes that let stuff in

In his case it's probably these (plus the ease of customization), things like generally better accuracy (not really an issue for a boot shooting gifted M855 that won't do better than ~3 MOA) or the M4 being like 300 grams lighter probably don't really matter to him all that much.

            Anonymous

I mean 300 grams is pretty significant weight savings when it’s something you have to carry on your person all day

              Anonymous

300g ain't much but it adds up.
What he'll appreciate more is the weight savings of not having to *add* things to the rifle to be able to mount optics and other stuff.
If you look at his AK he's got a custom dust cover and handguard that are both machined aluminum, plus a beefy QD sling adapter, that shit gets heavy fast.
The M4 is conveniently fricking covered by 1913 rails already so he can go to town without adding a thing.

in his case, he probably got pissed at his pistol grip breaking during combat, forcing him to switch rifles
That isn't a problem with the AK per se, but he probably dedicated the time and effort to get his AK set up with better ergonomics with what he could scrunge up, and the cheap Tapco tier furniture is what he could get.
Ironically, the Ukrainians who had FALs said it was much better at handling the mud than the AK. So there's probably a strong feeling that ARs are an upgrade, even though you could get a fricked up AR if you waste money on low tier brands and airsoft grade furniture.

Not everyone prefers the gAyR over the AK. I live in the US and own 3 AK’s and no AR’s. I’ve seen more than a few AR’s have problems at the range (even “high end” brands). I know the AR fanboys will seethe in the replies but it’s the truth. 10+ years of AK ownership and the only problem I’ve ever had was one of my rifles didn’t like 8m3 7.62x39 hollow points and failed to feed every 5 to 10 rounds

The ukie fighting aged males got small arms as fast as everyone could, just like in basically all armed conflicts since the XIXth century. This guy had an AK that got broken.
You're just another uppity brainwashed idiot with no idea about how the world actually works outside the shit the american gun entertaiment industry feeds you.

If someone is a soldier of a nation being invaded by an authoritarian state bent on wiping out their culture, identity, and replacing it with ass rape and communism it only makes sense that the soldier should have exemptions for gun laws so he can more adequately defend his nation. It's a shame that he has to purchase his own equipment but the option should be there, especially since standard issue isn't the best. It's more of problem during this war since the Ukrainians have a very diverse mix of equipment with mix of NATO and Eastern Bloc weapons both of varying age and quality. There's gonna be some poor sod that gets a 70+ year old AKM and he ought to be able to arm himself properly even if he has to pay out of pocket.
We must strive for a future where every Ukrainian soldier does not have to use slavshit and applying the same logic of domestic policy to wartime will actively hinder that.

The human brain is fully developed ~26 years old independent of sex, ethnicity, or geographic location. No one is neurologically an adult until then, but we have several facets of our civilization that rely upon the idea that children are "adults." So we're never going to move away from 16-18 year old children being given the autonomy and responsibility their brains literally aren't capable of responsibly taking possession of.

Your forebearers aren't the first child-soldiers in history, and they will not be the last.

                >Stop infantilizing grown men. This is part of the reason why we have such a manchild epidemic.
You're almost there, anon. "Grown men" historically literally were not.
They were, however, thrust into a far, far more sink-or-swim environment than people of the same ages are today. The manly 18-24 year old men of yore weren't men, neurologically, but the circumstances they had to survive and thrive in did a good job (generally, broadly speaking) "forcing" them to adapt to circumstances.
In the absence of those circumstances, you're left with people who's brains aren't adult, the circumstances they find themselves in as "adults" in the modern Western world definitely do not necessarily *require* manning-up/growing-up like they used to, and a society that still pretends they ought to just be like people were before.

tl;dr, it's not biological science infantiilizing grown men, it's a soft, epicurean society making already necessarily-immature people far less likely to be made to grow up. There's a reason the phrase "prolonged adolescence" is a thing in our society, anon.

A sufferer of prolonged adolescence typed this post.

17 is a grown ass man. Just because you don't know how to tie your own shoes at 25 doesn't mean everyone is an underdeveloped moron.

A 17 year old is a child. You can legally claim a 17 year old as a dependent. No male over the age of 25 believes otherwise unless they're gay, statistically.

                >Just because you're legally able to reproduce and die in a war doesn't mean you're a fricking actual adult

Yes, you are. If not, take away the rights of people under 26.

                >If not, take away the rights of people under 26.
I'm unironically in favor of this, but like I said earlier it won't happen because so very much of our society is built on the premise that certain-aged children must be deemed adults for the sake of many things, some of them important while some others are pretty petty.

Since you're a redditor who loves pop-science, here is a Slate article for morons like you.

                https://slate.com/technology/2022/11/brain-development-25-year-old-mature-myth.html

                >According to a 2016 Neuron paper by Harvard psychologist Leah Somerville, the structure of these and other brain areas changes at different rates throughout our life span, growing and shrinking; in fact, structural changes in the brain continue far past people’s 20s. “One especially large study showed that for several brain regions, structural growth curves had not plateaued even by the age of 30, the oldest age in their sample,” she wrote. “Other work focused on structural brain measures through adulthood show progressive volumetric changes from ages 15–90 that never ‘level off’ and instead changed constantly throughout the adult phase of life.”

Anyone below 90 years old is a heckin' child! I know this because reddit told me so!

                >structural changes in the brain continue far past people’s 20s.
There's nothing about the brain reaching maturity that says neuroplasticity stops being real. Are you arguing there's no notable difference between a 17 year old and a 30 year old?

                >did a good job (generally, broadly speaking)

I read it in his voice.

Peterson is fine when he's speaking narrowly on his field. He comes across as a moron when he tries to extrapolate his expertise to anything out of his field, one of the reasons being he has no idea how normal people talk. Dude's clearly on the spectrum though, so whatever.

Just because they're not at their peak neurologically, doesn't mean they don't already meet the standards for being responsible for themselves and their decisions.
The productive time of a person is also limited from a societal perspective. If you wait until everyone is 26 then you're cutting on average 6 years of productive time from everyone. That's billions of dollars both in lost revenue and added costs since they'll spend a longer time as a burden vs a contributor to society.

From a military perspective there's also a ton of positive qualities that a younger person has. Being more moldable to fit better into the military stucture and culture, being more energetic, being able to better cope with lack of sleep and nutrition and being much more resilient. Not to mention the same thing for the military part too. Get an 18 year old recruit, train him for 3 years and have him get practical experience in the field for another 4 and boom. You now have a fully neurologically developed 25ish year old who is an expert in his field and can most optimally contribute.

Tl:dr society can't afford to wait that long and never was. Hell modern standards are already pretty luxurious, since even in roman times you were an adult when you entered puberty.

I disagree with none of your points, it's why I don't think it'd ever be feasible to restructure our society (which is derived from times and eras when there just wasn't that much time, as you said). Maybe in some far off away future where we have magically have life expectancies easily exceeding a century. Until then, it's just shitposting.

Of course there is. The human brain doesn't stop changing until death. Are you saying the differences between a 15 and 30 year old are the exact same as the differences between a 30 and 65 year old?

                >Trust the science
Science isn't a matter of "trust" or not trust. Anyone imploring you to ever "just trust me bro" is someone deserving neither your trust nor faith. Science is observable, and more importantly, repeatable. Meaning you could go and do the legwork to reproduce the same results.
                >Hurr every human behaves exactly the way I think they do
No, humans behave the way humans do. Pretty well established literature on human nature across the evolutionary psychology, anthropology, and biology fields (the fields that generally still acknowledge that there are only two sexes). And it's not mystical indecipherable nonsense, either. It's scientific study of things you can and probably have seen around you or done yourself.
                >There's no room for an aspiring young man to perhaps want to do the best he can as he's learning his agency!
Why wouldn't there be? Acknowledging that your child is one doesn't mean you don't foster them and do your part as a man to raise strong children.
                >have you considered encouraging young men to act like adults
                Yes, see above.
                >they're not raised the way *I* want everyone to be raised
If you stopped trying to read what you want to read out of what I'm saying, you'll see that you'd want them raised differently than we do now, too. Because
                >encouraging young men to act like adults
                and having
                >aspiring young men perhaps want to do the best he can
                isn't what we have now.

It's obviously a case by case thing, but you don't learn some things until you've experienced them during your late 20s (and many people never learn)

Who the frick told you your brain development was what made someone an adult. In every species but humans it's ecual maturity/end of puberty. Purberyy ends around 18, that's why we chose 18. Many cultures did sexual maturity around 12-13. Being "smart" or having a fully developed brain was never it. You are arguing against a fact you made up.

          Anonymous

18 and above is legally an adult. Sure the brain is still developing but that's the line where we've generally agreed that people are competent enough to decide about their own life, including risking it.
Imo calling anyone above 14 a kid is misleading as they're clearly teens and as such have different expectations placed upon them then say vs a 8 year old.

Most militaries in the world would struggle with that and that's WITHOUT mobilization.

Most likely started expressing his dislike of how Moscow was just funneling enough shit to them to keep the conflict going.
Many of the DPR/LPR commanders eventually realized that Moscow (at the time) had no intention of actually making a push for it and then either recognizing the republics or folding them into Russia.
It was all just a diversion from Crimea (which was strategically important): with everyone's attention on Donbass, people just started seeing the annexation of Crimea as fait accompli, basically "yeah it's illegal but it's not like we can do anything about it".
Most of the separatist guys who became cranky about this had an accident just like Givi. The rest calmed down. The conflict was becoming less and less intense over the years.
Of course, then Monke had a change of heart and became convinced that Making Russia Great Again is his manifest destiny.

You have to remember that Givi and his buddies weren’t the smartest guys and were just some useful idiots from the region. They were hooligans who had rallied a couple other hooligans together and got lucky when they were given a ton of shit by Russia and got absorbed into the command structure of the Russian military. At some point these warlords, with their personalities and perceived independence (if they were alive today they’d basically be b***hing and starting shit online like that egg head from Wagner), were just considered to much of a risk to keep around. Strelkov is probably only alive since he was a Russian asset from beginning to end, same for the remainder of the surviving LPR/DPR stooges.

But that never happened. They were all Russian stooges from the start. Donbabwe and Luganda are fake identities. Those morons got themselves killed because they thought they were in a position to ask for promotions to managerial roles within the Russian system when their actual usefulness ran out. Moscow correctly considered them disposable hired thugs and they got disposed of once their b***hing for paychecks they didn't deserve got too tiresome.
DPR/LPR was Girkin's idea and he invented it only as a quick and dirty stratagem to attach a new oblast to Russia. Nothing organic about it, it was never meant to endure. There was supposed to be a lightning fast hybrid operation establishing local people's republics from Odesa to Kharkiv, then a quick referendum with 105% of the "novorossya" population voting to join Russia Kherson style. That plan didn't work out so well and Russia got stuck with an unresolved landgrab for 8 years.
Girkin is the only "novorossya" veteran remaining alive because he's not a complete moron. He had no illusions, knew his place exactly and he complied fully when the Kremlin suggested he should go back to Russia and lay low for a couple of years instead of trying to usurp roles he was never meant to perform.

The (Ukrainian) optics manufacturer gave him this, you absolute cretin.

True love story. Horrible this kid is expected to go back just because Russia and its brigade of third world shitskins refuse to let “nazi white supremecist global imperialist Ukraine” “win”, for the sole sake of messaging their Napoleon complex and preventing their racial PTSD when confronted with their inferiority in most things vs the west. Crazy how they can project all of that onto Ukraine of all places. truly the “non aligned” world and communist peoples is made up of nothing but useless eaters and degenerate useful idiots.

There's a half hour or something high quality vid on YouTube. Look up some combination of the words "Predator" "trench" "defense" and you should find it. Also there is an interview where he talks about what's happening in the video, dunno if it's available in English though.

Certainly you can't expect that a firearm gifted by Iraqis has any fricking legitimacy in Bongland. Even in the story presented he was supposed to have the pistol deactivated. So he knew he'd be prosecuted for an illegal firearm if the weapon was taken out of the armory, before the memory loss.
