The Spanish Military

How are they?

When I was in ROTC in university I did the CULP program during the summer where I worked with the Spanish Army in Madrid. They are really cool and fun to be around, they are a lot more lax and easy going and I was surprised how open they were with their political views compared to the US. Lots of cool traditions and activities. The equipment I saw was a mix of Cold War era stuff and new vehicles but probably the best time I had with a foreign military when it comes to training. They have amazing MREs.

Spain has global commercial and defenser interests, its a net importer of energy and other valuable commodities and a long naval tradition.

Key areas of interest for Spain are MENA and West Africa, so having a potent armada is a necessity.

Its valuable component for NATO,s naval and amphibious capabilities. A criticism would be that historically it invested to much on the army at the expense of the navy for varios reasons, including politics.

Spain does not need a large land army, some well equipped armour brigades to complement NATO forces in eastern europe and the baltics is good enough.

Instead, Spain should maxout on its navy, specially air naval capabilities and expeditionary forces, same Italy tbh.

        Anonymous

That is what Italy historically did, in fact our army is underfunded and only now something is getting funded, albeit extremely slowly. Our Navy and Air Force have historically been the ones with much better funding

Why does everyone post the foreign legion when they talk about Spanish military here?

The Spanish legion is not “foreign” idk why people call it the foreign legion. You need to have be a Spanish citizen or a legal Spanish resident to join.

          Anonymous

You must either be a Spanish citizen or a citizen of any of Spain's former colonies, (all of Spanish speaking SA, Caribs, etc. (filipinos not included) 25% of the legion is from these countries. Their reputation comes from their inclusion and actions outside mainland Europe. It is what it is.

            Anonymous

Yes but you still need to have legal Spanish residence to join. If you are a Colombian and immigrate to Spain legally with permit you can join. However you can’t do this if you aren’t from a Hispanic nation or former colony.

"Their reputation"... The only reputation La Legión has is jokes about goatfucking and gigolo aesthetics. Well that and fascism, and none of those have to do anything with results nor inclusion. Nor are they their fault, really, but either way I'm pretty sure they're the least respected of Spain's special forces by anyone not in the army, pretty much the only reason they're so well known outside of Spain is the massive amounts of thirst directed at them and that one civil war film.
They're also not any more inclusive than the rest of the army what you said applies to every branch, I know enough navy and marines to knlw they have a lot of foreign born citizens in their ranks.

            [...]
The Spanish legion is not “foreign” idk why people call it the foreign legion. You need to have be a Spanish citizen or a legal Spanish resident to join.

Its because the French Legion is the French Foreign Legion and those retards can't imagine the Spanish army as anything other than a copy of the French army.
Also based on posts I see every time I connect I'm 99% sure there's at least 1 bong poster on this forum with absolutely 0 life (I mean, I do not connect every day but when I connect he's ALWAYS in the recent threads and I do not have enough of a routine when it comes to time of day for us to simply coincide) who just likes shitting on Spain and insulting our military every time he can. (Protip. Look for posts claiming the Ajax fiasco is Spain's fault. See how similar their expressions and already-debunked talking points are, then compare that with posts accusing randies of being Warriortard for the mildest criticism of anything Bri'ish, and I don't mean the posts that are actually obviously Warriortard I mean when they blatantly jumped the gun. Either a lot of those are 1 single guy or we've got clones going around!) So he's probably doing it on purpose.

              >After developing a loathing of political extremism of all sorts during the Spanish Civil War, Pujol decided to become a spy for Britain as a way to do something "for the good of humanity".[4] Pujol and his wife[5] contacted the British Embassy in Madrid, which rejected his offers.

              >Undeterred, he created a false identity as a fanatically pro-Nazi Spanish government official and successfully became a German agent. He was instructed to travel to Britain and recruit additional agents; instead he moved to Lisbon and created bogus reports about Britain from a variety of public sources, including a tourist guide to Britain, train timetables, cinema newsreels, and magazine advertisements.[6]

              >Although the information would not have withstood close examination, Pujol soon established himself as a trustworthy agent. He began inventing fictitious sub-agents who could be blamed for false information and mistakes. The Allies finally accepted Pujol when the Germans spent considerable resources attempting to hunt down a fictitious convoy.[7]

I've had the displeasure of working with these mother fuckers. Loud as fuck and walk super slow in massive groups, they're also fucking retarded. They set off massive breaching charges 20-30m away from themselves, I've even seen them set off explosives as the guy is running away. They also have no tactical training at all, we had a flat range along side their infantry and had to teach them basic room clearing. Can't blame that on them though, they only get 500 rounds for a whole year to just re-up on their marksmanship. The only good ones I've met have been their artillery and FO's.

That is more or less on purpose, the army is basically structured on the basis of maintaining an oversized cadre of experienced officers and specialists that will gobble most of the already paltry funds. Then you add that the enlisted admission process is common between all the branches and ground infantry is where the rock bottom of admitted go. What I want to say with this is that aside from a core of units that are kept to a good standard in case of instant need, the rest of ground infantry are on the payroll primarily as a means to keep both NCO´s and officers proficient in the art of retard wrangling, in case shit got serious and conscription had to come back.

True for the army, the air force and navy have higher standards for the training and equipment of the soldiers, (not good, not terrible), also being small compared to the army, they have the luxury of being able to reject the idiots during basic.
