The shooting range problem?

Most shooting ranges fall into two categories. The first is indoor ranges with a maximum range of 25 yards (a Glock can hit a man between the nipples at 100 yards with sufficient skill), have a range officer staring at you, have 500 rules, have dumbasses with AR pistols making the place too loud for normal earpro, and might give you lead poisoning if they're not ventilated properly. The second type of shooting range is an outdoor range of maybe 100 yards owned by some kind of small town gun club who forces you to join their social club to use the range, makes you attend meetings, and has weird rules that extend to your personal life.

The only way get quality shooting training and be left the fuck alone is to crawl a mile into some swamp allocated as a "town forest" because the land is so shitty and mosquito infested that they couldn't sell it to anyone. I've become an expert at wilderness navigation and survival over the past ten years just as byproduct of looking for places to shoot.

Why aren't there 100 yard clearings with a berm where you're just explicitly allowed to shoot and don't have to deal with bullshit? Isn't this supposed to be America? It would cost states almost nothing to build and maintain public shooting ranges. You don't even have to plow them, people can just wear snowshoes. Literally just a fucking a place to shoot and not have to deal with people is all I want. No reason whatsoever why it needs to be this difficult.

Theres your problem. You can goto almost every major guntubers channel and find at least one video of them either complaining or talking about the trash left at public shooting areas and how we should cleanup after ourselves. You underestimate how awful people really are.

I don't care about trash though. If anything I feel comfortable when there's trash everywhere because that means nobody gives a shit. It means it's a freedom zone. It's like when you find a network of uninhabited dirt back roads where the stop signs all have bullet holes in them. That's where I feel at home. Trash is no reason to close down a shooting range. Just make a dirt pile at the base of a hill and let people do whatever the fuck they want and leave them alone.

But you can still shoot. I'm accustomed to shooting through peek-a-boo gaps between trees while being harassed by mosquitoes, spitting out spider webs, bleeding from thorns, and sweaty and exhausted from bushwhacking a mile or more through land that people gave up on trying to settle over 200 years ago, and then STILL being paranoid that I'm going to be confronted by a game warden who thinks I'm poaching or a hostile land owner who is too lazy and stupid to post his land. I couldn't possibly care any less about trash. I just want to FUCKING SHOOT.

The purpose of a shooting range is to shoot, not to look pretty. If there's trash everywhere, that will keep vacationing urbanites away. It's a plus. A few bullet holes in the road signs keeps them away too.

No one is saying you can’t shoot garbage, but we want the grounds cleaned before leaving. A lot of people, including you, seem to either not clean up after them selves or shoot things that can’t be cleaned up.

Stop being poor and buy land. Make your own range. Zero rules, zero restrictions, 24 hour access. Can shoot alone or with friends, no range officer hovering over you the whole time. And no random retards trying to make small talk. Ranges are for poor people and boomers who use it as a social club.

100% agree, and this is my plan. Make outdoor ranges through my state with places for shotgun, rifle, and pistol. Land is fairly cheap around here.

I agree with a lot of what you’re saying, but you’re way off. The way liberal politics and regulation would work today would have any government made gun range near towns or cities be either manned, membership/reservation, or indoors. I live close to Charlotte and even though it gets country fast past where I live I really couldn’t see an unmanned range being made near me.
        > It would cost states almost nothing to build and maintain public shooting ranges
In rural areas yes. Urbanites will 100% protest how often they recover lead, rebuild the burm, and ask for security/staff. Eventually it just becomes too expensive.

        > I don't care about trash though.
But that’s the issue. Trash like you don’t give a shit about how they effect the world around them, and that gives anti-gun fags a way to make us look worse.

I find it extremely odd how hung up you people are on the trash thing. I don't give a fuck about trash so long as it's not out in the woods, littering in nature is the only thing that offends me. If you've cleared land for a shooting range, you have already destroyed the environment there. Trash isn't going to make it any worse. You people sound like urbanites. Rural people throw beer cans all over the road because the road itself is already trash.

            Anonymous

            >Trash isn't going to make it any worse.
Nah, trash makes it much worse. For starters, many shooting areas don't require clearing any land at all. It's just finding a natural backstop--it could be a mountain in the desert, a hill, or the opposite side of a valley. If land is cleared for a range that land isn't destroyed, there's still all sorts of plants and animals there even if trees were cut down. I'd much rather look out over a field of grass than a field of beer cans. I'd much rather hang targets on a mound of clean dirt rather than a pile of busted glass bottles which could cut me if I have to kneel or sit. I'd like to shoot without having to smell the reek of someone's kitchen trash nearby or having to swat the mosquitoes now breeding in the tire pile.

            >Rural people throw beer cans all over the road because the road itself is already trash.
No, trash individuals throw beer cans all over the road because their parents were failures at life and didn't teach them any better. That has nothing to do with rural vs. urban, morons do that same shit in the city just the same as white trash does in methville. It's all the same game.

          Two factors at work here.
          1) Over time even the most reasonable person gets jaded with the stupidity of his fellow humans and thus there is a strong tendency for people to turn into authoritarian douchebags.
          2) I suspect many of those people you're labeling douchebags are in fact "normal".

A reason why a lot of gun clubs have high fees and rules, is because they don't want mouth breathers like you around. Another reason why there isn't more public land to shoot on, is because politicians hate you and don't want to help you in any way.

I feel like the best option is to find a range you like and go move near it. Lots of red states have pretty good ranges. There are places within 20 mins of me that are like you describe, just clearings with a berm (mountain). They are typically filled with people at all times, and tons of trash. I like the range because I go shoot in matches, and get a wide variety of scenarios to practice without having to set up a bunch of bullshit out in public land. Also I would never go to an indoor range fuck that.

Ranges can change a lot though, so be wary.

About 20 years ago there was a pretty great range near me. Facilities weren't the greatest, but it was pretty nice. For $10 you could shoot all day, no time limit or number of guns limit. They had outdoor pistol and rifle ranges out to 200 yards. If it happened to be busy an RSO would hang around but he was pretty cool. Rules were very simple: no alcohol/drugs, no hazardous targets like propane tanks, clean up after yourself. No club membership required, you could just show up, pay, and shoot.

It was fine for a couple of years, the guy started getting old and couldn't really check up on what was going on at the range so he just hung out in the office building instead. It soon turned to shit, trash and broken glass everywhere, people shooting up the target hangers on purpose, all the convenience stuff for shooters to use like sandbags, wooden blocks to use as risers, thumbtacks & clips to hang targets all got stolen. It became nearly impossible to clean up after oneself because fuckheads filled up the dumpster with their household trash.

Never underestimate the ability of humans to ruin a good thing.

I still choose to shoot in the National Forest 9 times out of 10 since I don't have to be around other people and I like dealing with traversing and shooting through foliage. Love Missouri.

there are in the southwest, anon. I live outside of las vegas and there's huge stretches of open desert, blm spots close to town with berms up close *and* open stretches, and almost infinite coyotes to shoot, east coast sucks unless you're fine with indoor pistol ranges.

we have public ranges in Wisconsin. Everytime I go you have retards flagging people with hot weapons, walking around the range with hot weapons (I don't give a shit about holstered pistols, but rifles I give a lot of fucks about) and general dumbassery. I hate public ranges.

    >local outdoor range has a $24/year membership fee
    >all they ask is what you're shooting today and can they see your easily photoshopped permit to get in
    >brooms to sweep up brass to either pick up yourself or put in a bucket for them (don't have to do either if you don't want to)
    >25, 50, and 100 yard stations, only thing ever asked of me is others asking me how I like my guns

Is this the bare minimum or a heavenly place?

I shoot mostly steel case ammo. The cases corrode into harmless iron oxide dust in like a year. I'd rather walk 20 miles than pick up brass.

there's steel casings all over the edge where the grass and shooting bays are at, the literal 70 year old RSO's don't give a fuck

Oh I'm sorry does YOUR state not allow you to just march out into the woods and shoot?

You’re looking in the wrong places, anon.
Pic related is my go to and it’s heaven for me
    >huge
    >beautiful (yes, the Southern Midwest deserts can be beautiful)
    >hardly ever is there any more than six people there
    >dozens of pistol bays spanning about 50m
    >three rifle bays that go up to 500m
    >no fee whatsoever
    >not even RSOs
    >no club association, range is owned and maintained by the Parks and Recreation department
    >mostly clean aside from the usual trash people use as targets and leave there without cleaning up

I used to shoot at a public range in a state forest but the dnr kept having to shut it down because rednecks would take trash out to shoot and not clean it up.

You shouldn’t be allowed to own a firearm if you don’t own land.
