The S400 fired five times or so in arbitrary directions, thus at least five incoming missiles must have been intercepted. Can't see a flaw in this logic.
However, who launched the interceptors when the whole system was abounded?

Most modern air defense can be set for autonomous use.
In fact Patriots are supposed to be given launch authorization by the human crew but left on automatic, there have been intercept failures on export Patriots after the Americans told the crews to leave it on auto but they tried to handle it manually.

There are 8 launchers in an S-400 battalion and 8 battalions in a complete S-400 system.
So all of these hits are on components of the systems rather than just totally destroying it.
They had 56 claimed systems and 8x8x56 is a lot of launchers.
Who knows if those numbers are actually what they really had or if they are deploying full systems. I think they were not close to 100% at the start of the war.

So, if Fighterbomber is telling the truth:
    7 ATACMS were launched
    5 were shot down
    1 failed
    1 struck, destroying the S-400.
The crew already knew they only had time to shoot down up to 5 so they were ran to cover when they saw the attack coming in — presumably the S-400 was in automatic mode. The use of 7 ATACMS suggests that the Ukies knew that was how many was required to saturate the S-400 and getting 2 through as standard practice to ensure a hit.

So, if that’s true, that means:
    1. The S-400 does not start tracking incoming threats until it’s relatively close so that it only has time to prosecute 5.
    2. The interceptors in use have a very high level accuracy — which is expected against a slow-moving ballistic target.
    3. Ukies knew exactly how many shots were required to saturate the S-400 — which means they knew how far away they would be before being prosecuted.

So the main question now is why the S-400 is failing to track and/or engage ATACMS until late into the flight path? At maximum range they will be on a ballistic flight path, and not only is the S-400 failing to track them through most of that flight the Ukies know that it’s failing to do so and know when the prosecution will begin. Is it a flaw that the Ukies know about (ie via US ELINT) or or is something the Ukies are doing to actively exploiting a known flaw? The one ATACMS failing is interesting but we don’t know how commonplace that is or the cause for that specific unit, or how many in the flight were going to fail, ie, how many of the 5 which were shot down would have failed.

It’s possible. Maybe the fact that S-400 couldn’t track them for so long into the flight was because there was an advanced model MALD doing jamming degrading the range of the tracking radar’s ability to lock on.

I don't think so, given MALDs are air launched. I haven't heard any solid information on the coordination between Ukraine's rocket artillery forces and their air force in regards to ATACMS strikes. It's easier to coordinate a MALD package with Storm Shadow since they're air-launched as well.
There's also the fact that MALD is built to simulate fixed-wing level flying assets like cruise missiles and aircraft, not a maneuvering ballistic missile like ATACMS. Any radar operator worth their salt would be able to tell the difference.
        I'm with

        >Isn't it a possibility that some of the claimed missiles that were shot down were

Watching the video of the site getting hit they launched like 20 seconds before taking incoming. Think it's less a saturation vs depth of battery thing then S-400 unironically not being able to detect ATACMS until they're danger close which is a whole lot funnier

  16. 4 weeks ago

Even if we take the number of ATACMS launched at face value, a strike like that has an insane return of investement particularly since the Russians don't seem to bother with dispersing the different components. Even if they only took out a radar that is still very cheap. Things are not looking good for Russian AA. Good luck protecting your industry from cheap long range drones jejmao

      Anonymous

I agree in principle - ATACMS run about $1.1 million each, so whether it’s one or “officially seven” to saturate and take out an $800 million S-400 battery, the ROI is devastating. I believe “just the radar” is the most expensive and vital bit of kit, though. Launchers are comparatively cheap.
