The new Zastava M19 utilizes in my opinion so far the best solution for the AK optics problem.

The dust cover is replaced by an aluminum part that attaches with takedown pins in the front to the gas block and in the rear to the trunnion. The result is a simple and sleek design with plenty of rail space.

However the more to the rear mounted charging handle is a huge mistake in my opinion, they should have retained the normal AK charging handle on the right and added a springloaded Galil style dustcover on the charging handle track.

I'm not sure how much utility the barrel change will have but I guess swapping between 7.62x39 for short barrel suppressed CQB and 6.5 Grendel for general infantry use might be useful.

in which alternate universe does that make sense?

Everyone is raving about the short barrel performance of .300 blackout which is equivalent to 7.62x39 and the Grendel is well known for being an excellent long range intermediate round.

*swapping between short CQB, medium general purpose, and long LMG barrels as needed, without armorer time or issuing anybody a different gun

Nah, the best solution is that AK12 prototype that had a hinged lower like a FAL. The M19 is certainly an improvement, but removable dust covers as a concept are old dogma holding the AK back IMO. If the AK action is to survive the century, it needs to become bottom-access rather than top-access.

The one piece stamped receiver is a significant advantage for the AK. Though I guess an extruded aluminum upper receiver with an injection molded lower like in the SCAR really is the zenith of efficiency in modern manufacturing technology.

The legally distinct sg-550 wasn't even conceived of until well after the ak-12 was finalized and in production.
The sig/beretta and fn deviations from the akm are quite nice though.
I would have loved an earlier proto 12 before Russia demanded they get a cheaper modified 74m with changes just shittily welded onto it.

The AR-15 is the crab of assault rifles.

    Don't really agree.
I think at this point, unless you want to overhaul the overall gun's design, the Zenitco hinged rail is basically painless to install and just works. The TWS dog-leg rail is slightly more finicky, but also is okay.
And if you want to go all the way, the Sureshot Chassis are the next step to take.

The base gun doesn't need that much work, the above is overcomplicating things.

The hinged rail is not as accurate as the Zastava system and also results in less rail space. The Zastava has enough space for every aiming device you may need and all on one well mounted rail.

        >The Zastava has enough space for every aiming device you may need and all on one well mounted rail.
I seriously doubt it's long enough for an LPVO, thermal or NV clip-on, *and* IR laser.

No; the real answer to the "AK optics problem" is to either scale down your expectations, switch to a normal gun that can support arbitrary amounts of tomfoolery on the 12-o'clock rail, or be a government that can just RFP some weirdo custom solution.

          Might actually be tho
It's from the trunnion all the way to the gas block. They could also make an even longer rail version if they felt the need.

    >AK optics problem
Slide your optic mount into the side rail and turn a lever. Wow that was so fricking hard.
Not everything has to be picatinny when they had an older option that just works.

This. Add an LRBHO to the AKV-521 (which should be trivially easy, just slightly change the geometry of the M70A's BHO) and it's the AK with all of its problems completely fixed.

The side mount is solid and works, but it doesn't fix the fundamental issue which is that the optic still has to be removed to field strip and clean the gun.

You don't actually have to remove side mount optics for disassembly on AKs
It's just a clunky solution, other than that it works fine.
