The Mythic Wild West With Modern Guns

Alright, I know that in the old west of the real world not every dusty cowpuncher was a deadly gunslinger packing a six gun. I know that guns were expensive and most people who owned them probably most commonly had and used a single shot shotgun.
But I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the romantic west of myth and legend where The Man With No Name and the Lone Ranger lived.
If the guns of the modern day existed in that land, what would cowboys, gunslinger, and outlaws carry? What would be the direct equivalents of the guns they did carry?
Something like:
>Would Glocks replace Peacemakers?
>Would ARs be the new levergun?
>What would be the sharpshooter buffalo gun to replace the literal Sharps? What would Quigley shoot a bucket from 800 yards away with iron sights?

The romantic novel cowboy was still just your regular dude, if you wanted movie cowboys with kill counts higher than executioners you should have specified.

Make up your mind. Is it myth and legend, or Hollywood body stacking? If the later, then they'll be kitted out like soldiers. If the former, then walk into your local Walmart and look at what they have on the shelf for rifles and shotguns, and a "truck gun" is most likely going to be .22 rifle for people concerned with utility or a youth size shotgun for people concerned with potential violence.

Myth and legend covers the larger than life stuff that falls between Hollywood and real life. But I'd say the myth and legend is closer to real life life than what Hollywood generally portrays.

                Yeah. Reality:
                >Billy the Kid killed 8 men before being tracked down and killed at 21 years of age

                Larger than life myth:
                >Billy the Kid killed 21 men, one for each year of his life, before being killed

                Hollywood:
                >there's nothing unusual about outlaws and lawmen having killed one or more people for each year of their life, here are the stories of some who weren't notable enough to be widely known a century later and achieved a significant portion of that within a year or less

                Video games:
                >on the day before setting off on his quest for revenge against the man who shot him and left him for dead, the Courier decided to kill 5 members of a local gang threatening the town he was staying at, this carnage continued and despite deciding he should try to avoid conflict going forward he had already killed more than 40 people within the first week of his journey

7.62x39mm blows old .45-70 loads out of the water for trajectory, and most civilians in the 1800s weren't messing around with full power military ammo like .45-70. Your idea of engagement distances in the civilian world is completely detached from reality.

    >The Mythic Wild West With Modern Guns
The famous shootout in the wild west was in a gun free zone, over gun free zones. I guess a modern take would be to pretend there are gun stores located in schools. Full auto firearms free with reduced price lunch programs. It would make as much sense as westerns, so it should be all right.

I mean, for many that lifestyle never changed. Out west and in the Great Plains, there are still plenty of ranchers and wranglers doing basically the same thing they always have since the Wild West. Herding cattle and livestock and spending nights on the range. What you’ll see a lot of is bolt actions, light semi autos, and hand me down pistols and revolvers. Go to any hunting stores used section and that’s it basically. As for clothes, expect a lot of wrangler jeans, ariat shirts and boots, and carhartt jackets

Ranchers just wear a sidearm in an OWB holster and have an AR-15 or a shotgun in their truck. So we have:
    >Concealed handgun
    >Full-size handgun
    >Patrol rifle
    >Patrol shotgun
    Or
    >Glock 19
    >Glock 17
    >AR-15
    >Mossberg 590
That said, the romantic wild west is a meme.

    >uh they would just have to shoot coyotes
    >nothing bad ever happened on the frontier
    >just coyotes and shooting at other white people

People on the frontier were armed because they had to deal with fricking Indians, who were mythologized in the 60s and 70s by dishonest revisionist history depts. into misunderstood spiritual hippie peaceniks who dindu nuffin and had it all figured out until the white devils showed up and took their land with beads and disease blankets (never happened, not one instance of it).
In reality many frontier tribes were constantly warring hereditary gangs of marauding slavers who regularly stole women, white and from other tribes, to keep as rape slaves and rear their children. They practiced ritualistic cannibalism, torture, cooking people alive, etc. From contemporary sources it was pretty clear how fricked trying to coexist with them was and there was a reason why whites finally just got the army to kill all of them. So I guess the equivalent of frontier cavalry forts would be some air cav and apaches (ironic) to deploy rapidly to shred savages armed with whatever they could steal from the murderraped settlers.

The army names their helicopters after injun tribes precisely because of institutional memory of having to fight them. It's the same reason the backbone of the US cruise missile inventory is named after an injun throwing axe (tomahawk).

unironically true for many tribes but not all

        Anonymous

Yeah, that's why I qualified with "many". There were some native tribes who coexisted peacefully with whites (like I said, the relatively peaceful tribes had been victim to the same kind of treatment since time immemorial before westerners ever showed up), but the US Army didn't build frontier forts and pay salaries for cavalry regiments all over the place for no reason. They were fighting a war against a lot of different groups of natives who were doing some really horrific shit to each other and to the white civvie subsistence farmers who were already barely making it. Today we are incredibly dishonest about what the nature of that war was, what it was like to live back then, and what the natives of each tribe were like. It was an astonishingly brutal fight for survival (that the US regularly lost territory in) that took over 200 years to win. If you read old books we used to be proud that our forefathers were that resilient. Now for political reasons we treat it like it was a rigged fight with an outcome that was always predetermined. Normies treat Disney's Pocahontas like a documentary. Saying that using the army to defend settlers from attack was justified will get you called a racist at best.

"A small army of Shawnees, Delawares, Kickapoos, Caddos, Comanches, and Kiowas attacked the Tonkawa settlement near the Whasita River, killing 137 women, men and children, more than half the tribe.... Among the dead was Chief Can't-Kill-Him and the rest of Tonkawa leadership."

    > WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.
    >An investigation has been launched after a man was shot and killed after threatening to open fire at a party Sunday night in West Palm Beach.
    >It happened around 10:30 p.m. at a family gathering in the 800 block of 4th Street.
    >Police say things took a turn when two women got into an altercation and the man intervened.
    > The 22-year-old victim went to his car to retrieve a gun and threatened to shoot up the gathering. He was told repeatedly to put his weapon down.
    >At that point, a 32-year-old man at the event, who has a concealed carry permit, pulled out his gun and shot him.
    >He died at the scene.
    >The shooter is cooperating with police who believe this was an isolated incident.
    >No other suspects are wanted, the community is not in danger and no charges are pending at this time.

Just go to kaotic or on of the sites that has murder webms. Most of the violence is either between stupid and stupid or an attack from behind where the other person didn't even see it coming. A lot of the assassinations are done by people who who walk up behind someone and blow their brains out.

If we're to assume the cowboys of legend would somehow be alive today and they knew they would be in a gunfight soon then it's safe to assume they'd buy whatever is
    >cheap (cowboys never have a lot of money)
    >simple manual of arms (for when they go to shoot someone in a drunken stupor)
    >powerful enough to drop a man in a single shot at close distance (equivalent to a 45 colt)
We could speculate as to what exactly they'd pick but I think a short barrel shotgun like the shockwave would be pretty high on their list.
