carried a heavier load further, and for all the american faith in daylight precision bombing, if you wanted a hardened point target taken out you sent lancs with tallboys

      Weird cope. Lancaster was terrible.

      >Only 18.8 percent of RAF Lancaster crewmen survived being shot down, whereas for the crews of the USAAF B-17s it was closer to 50 percent
      >Middlebrook and Everitt give overall figures in The Bomber Command War Diaries of 389,809 sorties with 8,953 losses. Davis gives the total USAAF figures as 417,324 sorties with 6,571 losses.

You seem like a very angry Brit. Very sensitive.

baiing out in darkness versus bailing out at night.

but if we want to talk about relative effectiveness and survivability, try figuring out how many crew died per tonne of bombs dropped. remember the Lanc was carrying 12000+ lbs as a standard load.

        Anonymous

        >Noooo you have to account for night vs day
        >P-please ignore night vs day when counting crew deaths per tons of bombs dropped
The truth is there will never be a proper comparison between the Lancaster and B-17 because of the difference in how they were used. Regardless, the title for "best heavy bomber" should probably go to the B-29 but that's not even a fair comparison since it was a huge technological leap beyond everything that came before.

This was a sensible and fair post that got utterly ignored.
But not by me. I saw you, Anon. I saw you trying to have a reasonable conversation and I appreciated it.
The B-29 is hands down the best bomber of the war, but as you said the technological leap over everything that came before was so vast it's hardly worth talking about.

B17s could carry just as much. They generally didn't because they flew in formation, at higher alt, faster, farther and actually hit things they were bombing.

The shit about B17s only carrying 6000 lbs is from its normal operation load, in the flight manual it shows $14,800 lbs

Gregs airplanes had a video way back shitting all over the Lancaster but he took it down because of all the bong screeching.

Frick off, their bomb bay was badly outdated and couldn't carry nearly the same breadth of firepower that the Lancaster could. The B-17 would never have become a Dambuster.

in practice american figures by day in terms of accuracy were the same as the british by night, american theoretical pre war figures had 100 yards. operational results were that they generally managed 1-2% of bombs on a drop ended up within 100 yards. incidently they only managed to get that accurate once the RAF transfered some navigational radar to the USAAF units

the norden sight was probably the single most overrated piece of equipment in american service and never worked as well as advertised.

B17s could carry just as much. They generally didn't because they flew in formation, at higher alt, faster, farther and actually hit things they were bombing.

          >The shit about B17s only carrying 6000 lbs is from its normal operation load, in the flight manual it shows $14,800 lbs
and 14000lbs was the standard operational load for a lancaster, 8000lb was the max internal load for the B17

          https://www.bombercommandmuseumarchives.ca/lancavrospecs.html
2530 miles with 7000 pound bomb load
1730 miles with 12,000 pound bomb load
1550 miles with 22,000 pound bomb load

B17 max speed was the same as Lancaster, cruising speed was actually slower, although ceiling was higher.

            Anonymous

Why do people forget about the B24? Untl the later versions of the B17 B24 was the preferred aircraft due to its higher speed and range and they've produced more of them during the war.

Faster than a lanc but still noy carrying as heavy a bombload to the same distance

            Anonymous

Lancasters were only faster below 18000 feet, B17s were faster above this, B24s were much faster above this.
            B17s usually flew at 25k

B17s could carry an additional 8,000 lbs on underwing racks
they never did because they needed the weight to go to fuel for alt, speed, armor and armament and time allocated to lining up into formation which took 45 min

look at the wingloading, HP of B17s and Lancasters, it's very similar
            They will have similar performance

Lancasters had appalling crew loss rates because they had no armor except for the pilot kek

              >B17s could carry an additional 8,000 lbs on underwing racks
and their max load including the racks was still less than the lancasters max load of 22000lb.

the simple facts are that the lanc could carry a greater weight of bombs to the same distance, with similar or superior accuracy and could carry a wider variety of stores as well.

the B29 was better but no other american bomber was.

Bombing at night is harder. You have all the issues of flying at night in the 1940's. German aircraft had radars and you had to rely on pathfinders to mark the bombing targets.

              Anonymous

different set of threats, during daytime agile single seat fighters attack the bomber group, seeking to break through the bombers escorts to hit the bombers, at night the bombers are stalked by heavily armed fighters who seek to get into a firing position ithout being detected.

also no bomber does well with multiple 20mm cannon and MGs firing into it.

The British, who can afford aluminium better than we can, knock together a beautiful wooden aircraft that every piano factory over there is building, and they give it a speed which they have now increased yet again. What do you make of that? There is nothing the British do not have. They have the geniuses and we have the nincompoops. After the war is over I’m going to buy a British radio set – then at least I’ll own something that has always worked.

The source is supposedly Erhard Milch recalling the argument between Goering and Willy Messerschmitt about aircraft production. As quoted by David Irving in Rise and Fall of the Luftwaffe page 233. Except for the bit about British radios which is from a different occasion and from an R V Jones book on electronic warfare.

I'm looking forward to seeing the wheels and pulleys in a Wehrboo brain trying to work out if David Irving is an unreliable source.

Britain had better aircraft radar and radio/EW/ELINT/electric wizard piss compared with germany. The 10cm AI radar alone put them about 3-4 years ahead but they also had better jammers and ELINT which they used in a much modern effective way like having a special squadron of B-17 Flying Fortresses (yes the RAF had B-17s) that had their bomb bay sealed up and filled with different jamming sets (some of which were extremely high power for the period).

They even had Wild Weasels: On D-Day German radars were tracked and destroyed by RAF Typhoons with a radar detector called Abdullah (Inshallah brother Dowding). Also Night Intruder Mosquitos carried a home-on-jam system called Lucero that they used to find and destroy German jamming stations trying to jam Eureka (radar beacon used for precision equipment drops). These are the exact same method used by Wild Weasels in Vietnam before the development of the Shrike.

The USAF didn't use the Shrike until 1966 (2 years since the first bombing of North Vietnam) with the first generation of F-100F Wild Weasels just using a basic radar detector and jammer to follow a signal to a SAM site and bomb them with cluster bombs and rockets.

So yes, all in all the Allied bombings were objectively worse and morally reprehensible in far too many cases. Hitler shouldn't have responded with futile bombings in kind and stuck to threats and shows of force that reduced casualties like in Denmark or the Netherlands, but that changes nothing about the inherently evil nature of killing civilians without purpose.
We should be better than that.

The allies didn't bomb just to kill civilians you brainlet. Their main focus was always to degrade industrial capability and destroy infrastructure with killing factory workers and dehoming civilians due to poor bombing accuracy rationalized as a feature not a bug. Even Dresden was bombed because it was one of the most important rail hubs on the eastern front. The only allied bombing target in Germany without an industrial/military focus was Berlin where the main goal was destroying the city itself from a symbolic POV to weaken German morale.

          >Using Luftwaffe bombings in Holland as an example of a "show of force" different from evil allied bombing.

Lol. lmao. Germans really are like vatBlack folk in how they accuse of what they are/were doing. Destroying 80% of a historic European city for the express purpose of forcing the Dutch to surrender kind of undermines your point a little by showing the Germans invented terrorbombing cities like they did firebombing cities. How is exactly is that morally superior to the RAF bombing Berlin?

It's amazing how many things in WW2 boil down to:

          >Axis does something fricked up to the Allies
          >"Totaller Krieg is amazing. We aren't bound by the petty morality of the rules of war"
          >The Allies use their larger industrial might and superior capability to do the same thing to the Axis 100x over.
          >"How could the allied swine do this to their fellow men. This is a war crime"

This post is very representative of the British mind. The only pride they have is for what their dead ancestors accomplished, they do nothing anymore, they create nothing, they achieve nothing. Very sad.

On one hand I wonder if you all honestly think a post about my fascination with aviation history and British planes in general means it's the only thing I care about, but on the other hand this is why I love you guys so much.

At least this is a new response, typically anons will just tell me I'm lying about it all. Probably didn't happen this time because my post didn't warrant mention that my other grandpa was Brigate Nere.

my Grandad was the biggest asset to the Allied air power during WW2.
He was responsible for downing hundreds of Luftwaffe aircraft.
Hitler hated him and wanted him removed as a mechanic and sent to the eastern front.

My grand-uncle was an unfortunate victim of the concentration camps, he died in April 1945 just before the war was officially ending when, his haste to escape the camp, fell out of his guard tower and breaking his neck on impact.

On THREE separate occasions visiting the UK, I have sat next to an older gentlman on a plane and learned they were Lancaster mechanics during The War. Was any adult man in England from 1939-1945 -not- a Lancaster mechanic?
