The answer is literally parked right next to it, kek
It's an up-gunned Sherman that's faster and smaller.

Well, kind of. It was meant to supplant the Chaffee. Sherman was to be replaced by what would become the Patton series.

      chaffee gun not big enough

      >chaffee gun not big enough
No, Chaffee HULL not big enough.

If you want to know about the evolution and demise of light tanks in the U.S. , look around on the interwebs for a copy of Hunnicutt's "Sheridan".

        Light tank VERY good.

        >Army frickery killed it
        >Marines wanted it
Man Army "pie in the sky" thinking has gotten SO many US servicemen killed over the years.

The Marines wanted a lightest possible tank because they were also going in on the M103.

Army has to think about winning the BIG conventional war slugfest. Other branches don't. This dominates their strategic thinking.
Shinseki was completely wrong about berets but, to his credit, the other thing he catches shit for was trying to get the army to be lean-and-mean with the Stryker brigades. Then you have the whole M10 Booker thing where people can't wrap their brain about how they would be useful and fill a gap.
I'd say leave it to the USMC to figure it out but they try to be the army when they get a budget and completely abandon the concept of needing an armored doctrine when they don't.

Stupidly fast and agile. Zero armor. semi-autoloading high velocity rifle. But not built to float.
Some conehead in the puzzle palace says "Russian light tanks float, so should ours". Nobody pointed out that "Russian light tanks also suck". And thus did the T92 die.

To be fair the PT76 IS a pretty good light tank.

PT76 has paper thin armor. It can get killed by a .50 cal.

The gun is also pretty shit, aside from the HEAT round.

Compared to anything that does not have to float, it's unadulterated shit.

Well half the MG-51 system was inside Sheridan and all of it worked like shit so you're incorrect

The M60A2 Starship had Shillelagh missiles and they were shit too, so the problem wasn't anything to do with the M551.

Well, it was partially to do with the M551 in that the M551 was designed around using shillelagh

Its ok, the US Army destroyed the MBT-70 programme with its obsession with missiles which dont work too. The US army was very good at ruining it's own projects during the cold war, they ended up needing Congress to specifically make them design a normal tank, and help from the UK to do it.

In the context of the early 1950s, its not that bad. The US was still using shermans and M24s up to 1953, the M41 was meant to replace the M24 in a light tank role. Its adequate to take on infantry, light vehicles, and the more obsolete tanks still being used like the T-34-85. Unfortunately tank development rapidly outpaced it, it wasnt future proof, limited budgets while the M47 wasnt even developed yet, and it was also rushed into service and quickly cancelled as a result, for reasons relating to bad management.
