The Investigative Committee of Russia continues to investigate a criminal case on the fact of a terrorist act committed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the airspace of the Belgorod region.
It was established that on January 24, 2024, military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the area of the village of Liptsy, Kharkiv region of Ukraine, using an anti-aircraft missile system, attacked a military transport aircraft Il-76 of the Russian Aerospace Forces with two missiles.
During the inspection of the scene, 116 fragments of the hulls and mechanisms of two missiles with inscriptions and markings in English were found at a distance of 1.8 km northeast and 4.8 km southeast of the alleged place of attack of the aircraft.
During the study of objects, the following markings were found on the seized fragments: "ASSY 11455748", "SN740179", "ASSY 11461343", "SN740206", "ASSY 11461865", "SN740207", "Raytheon", "CONFIDENTIAL classified by PATRIOT SECURITY CLASSIFICATION GUIDE DATED: 9/22/83 ADDENDUM DATED 11/28/83 8/8/84 CONTRACT NO/DAAH01-86C-A018", as well as "18876 ASSY", "MARTIN MARIETA" and "10253043-39 02 S/N 80025".
According to the results of the study using ion mobility spectrometry (SPI), gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection and high-performance liquid chromatography with mass selective detection, it was found that traces of rdx with impurities up to 10% of octogen were found on flushes from objects, which is typical for explosives of foreign manufacture.
According to the conclusion of the examinations conducted during the investigation, the fragments seized from the scene, according to their design features, geometric characteristics and available markings, are structural elements of the MIM-104A anti-aircraft guided missile of the Patriot complex of the United States, developed by Raytheon and Hughes corporations and manufactured by Raytheon.

There is a contract with the number DAAH0186CA018, Patriot MIM-104A named after Comrade. Reagan. purchased in 1986-87 . It's not even a MIM-104B (PAC-1).

Interestingly, it was previously believed that the oldest of the Americans transferred were the MIM-104D (PAC-2).

periodic refresh. Batteries and other systems are checked. Usually the solid rocket motor will last longer.

If care is taken, then the weapons can work decades after storage. Which is not the case with the current crop of Russian war reserves

well, I was wondering because thermal batteries are partially pyrotechnic and I've seen issues with them in the past.

        >how the frick are 40y.o. missiles still working? Don't the thermal batteries usually go bad in like, 10 or 20? did they un-canister the missiles, refresh them and send them?

AFAIK these missiles were probably upgraded during their lifespan and then refurbished.

that makes sense, but would they update the markings to show that?

          >that makes sense, but would they update the markings to show that?

Why would they? The only real important number is the missile serial number.

Does anyone actually deny that Ukraine shot it down? Most of the discussion was centered around whether there was actually POWs onboard like Russia claimed (PROTIP: there wasn’t)

      Anonymous

... and if there were POWs onboard, it is irresponsible to carry them around in vulnerable transport aircraft near the border with the recent history of Ukraine shooting down SU-34s and the like.

Not irresponsible, illegal. If POWs were being transported, they should have informed Ukraine about it.

For my part, the fact that the Russians never claimed that they had shot it down implies that this one, for once, actually was friendly fire. I'm not going to say it must have been friendly fire, though, and if legit investigation shows that it was a Patriot I'd accept that.
