It lets you pull the gun back into your shoulder easier. You weld the gun into your shoulder and you don't really have to hold up the weight as much, easier to pull in then to hold a weight up in your outstretched arm.
A VFG allows the same thing but is not legal on a pistol.

A short VFG, paired with a thumb actuated light is GOAT if you don't have night vision.

There are people browsing this board that don't remember Magpul Dynamics, don't know who Chris Costa is. And probably don't even know what Magpul's original product was. There will be people browsing this site in a few years that will have been born after Magpul was even created. Hell, there probably are already people browsing it.

Funny that everybody I saw with these on their mags ended up with them pushed down so far the loop was touching the mag. Basically just really fancy grip tape at that point. People did seem to see value in those original magpuls as grip tape, but if you actually want a pull loop tape is still the superior option.

You're missing out. Even just a simple angled grip is really nice for giving you a consistent thing to index your grip against so you get a more consistent stance and grip.

        Anonymous

And just to safe money really, can just grip the barrel shield. There are also lasers, rangefinders, and grenade launchers to consider. Those grenade launcher attachments are legal and pretty cheap honestly.

angled makes c-grip easier but the straight grip let's you handle your rifle easily with just your off hand leaving your other hand free if needed

if having to ruck and wade through wilderness prefer the straight, for tacticallarpbeardgays the angled grip is better for standing still across from paper gangsters

You can still angle grip your rifle with the vertical one, it just doesn’t feel as good as the angled grip. I just wish Magpul would make the gen 1 angle grip in mlok.

I rather like my BCM one. I use it as a handstop the majority of the time moreso then an actual grip, but it's big enough that I can hold my rifle under control with a sling if I need.

Handstop really are superior for ergonomics and weapon handling. I tried lot's of different vfg's and angled grips but nothing comes close to a good handstop. It just makes your grip more secure without wasting space (or being a possible snag hazard). Never going back from handstops

Most pictures I see of actual soldiers using the vfg has them holding it with a full wrap around grip

        Anonymous

Depends on the accessory loadout. I have that same flashlight and it’s gigahueg. No great way to hold the grip with it on. Add the standard PEQ on top and that guy kind of has to beercan grip his vfg.
Although soldiers in the field can have good insights, don’t ever fully take photos of them as 100% proof something is good. Most soldiers aren’t expert shooters, so you have to weigh their practical experience against their innate moronism. Guy in the pic has a dedicated bipod on his M4, which is something I only ever saw tards do IRL.

  10. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

AFG is a meme, you can do the same with a VFG via the thumb-break grip while also being able to use it as a monopod in some situations, brace it against a barrier, or just deathgrip it if you're going FA.

  11. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

The AFG only has any kind of popularity because it fixed the problem of the USGI KAC quadrails being godawful to actually hold.
Private gun owners have numerous choices and don't need to buy the shitty old style KAC rails, so they can avoid this issue entirely. I'd go so far as to say the overwhelming majority of private AR owners would be better served with clamshells than any other option. You can attach a flashlight to the FSB and you're good to go if you aren't planning on adding IR, which 99% of private owners won't add. And if you are an IR user, tons of options that aren't those shitty old quadrails.
Vertical grip was popular partially for the same reason of the quad handguards being shit. But VFGs also work as handstops, and are a good place to put a tapeswitch if your flashlight isn't easy to access with your thumb. Overall a more versatile accessory.

It is really simple to find out and most people are too pussy to do it.

Don all your tacticool gear go outside and hold your rifle at the low ready for 8 hours.
You will find out with a quickness what works what does not for you.

The people who have to do that don't get a choice of what to put on their rifle, so the point is moot.

            Anonymous

Are you on drugs we had a 20' conex box full of vidmars loaded with shit to improve the ergonomics. That is how I got my KAC forgrip& quad rail, trijicon RX01 because we never had to turn that shit in. In pretty much any unit I know of you are allowed to make ergonomic changes as long as it does not affect mechanical operation.

          Anonymous

Hmm, but typically when you're on guard or patrol you wouldn't be holding your weapon up and aimed would you? You'd be able to let it rest against you in your sling or if you had to keep holding it, alternate how you grip it? Like slinging your arm in front of the magwell?

            Anonymous

That is why I said low ready. I set my mag pouches so my left forearm rested on them to carry some of the weight. That wieners the shit out of your wrist if you were just holding the handguard or an AFG. To snap shoot from that position you just have to punch out with left arm and rifle is on target ready to fire.

              Anonymous

Well if you don't wanna hold the afg constantly you can switch to holding the mag well.

Pretty sure a broom handle helps you control muzzle rise

        Anonymous

In my experience death gripping a VFG can help with full auto 7.62. Full auto 5.56mm and especially full auto 9mm both don’t really see a rise difference since they are pretty controllable already.
To note, during the GWOT when VFGs were at high popularity most people using them weren’t using full auto guns. M4s and M16A2s that were wide issue were 99.9% of the time fired on semi. VFGs used by average Joe soldiers were a personal preference thing and often not subject to nearly as much theorycrafting as people online do. It was commonly a guy playing around with different setups and deciding what felt right. In many cases it was a comfort thing or a way to access a flashlight. Standard level joes aren’t really taught all the finer tactical theory. Once you get to more elite units those guys are probably able to better articulate why they setup their rifles the way they do.

Grippod had the problem of $150 for what is essentially just a bunch of plastic.

We both know you don't own one. Nobody actually wants to pay for it.

I'd get one if it was $30.

        Anonymous

Real gripods have metal legs wrapped in plastic like a glock mag and are quite amazing on a 240 or saw which is pretty much what they were made for in the first place. I have one on my AR10 but I did not pay for it. It costs about the same as a foregrip and bipod. I think they never took off because at the time people thought they were for Ar15s and to be tacticool you needed a chopped foregrip and lock your arm c-clamp to show off your tats and affliction shirt.

          Anonymous

They never took off because most people experience them being rattle-y pieces of shit that don't function well as a bipod while being fricking massive to the point of annoyance as a VFG, though neither of those are inherent features but just a result of most people wanting something cheap and getting chink-shit and early designs being hot garbage. It poisoned the image of them in the mind of consumers.
